Hi,

Can anybody tell me what the reel capacity of this is. The listing is a little unclear - stating 600ft capacity but, that 1200ft can be used with a bigger reel? I tried asking the seller but, no response.

Michael, yes it does take 1200ft reels. The item description clearly states a 1200ft max capacity, by the way. I have one of these and it's an OK machine.

That's a Chinon SS1200. The 1200 of the name comes from the fact it takes 1200ft reels. Looks to me like that's exactly what's on it in the pictures.

Great projector but fragile compared to the better makes such as Elmo and Fumeo.

Yep, I thought that the 1200 in the name meant just that - however, the listing says:

MAXIMUM REEL CAPACITY = (180m) - 600 ft, 1200FT (360M) with optional reel.

I think it's his way of telling us that it dosent come with a 1200ft reel, only a 600ft one. It's a bit misleading and he isnt doing himself any favours by stating it in that way.

Its funny, the guy has so many pictures, and Sooooooo much detailed info about the projector, but then under sells one of the most important points. I have one of these and I made a tiny alteration on the front spindle so that in addition to reg8mm and super8 reels it can hold the 1200 foot sized extend-a-reels. I had acquired a few features on these reels and figured this was the easiest way to use them since I could not find an actual extend a reel.

I'll second John! (I'm the bloke at 217 at the moment) I'm thinking of how high I want to go - I paid £650 for mine from Ian O'R (years ago) and have been gently looking for another for the last 5 years!! The cam tank (I think that's what it is called) went iffy (was OK at 18fps but rubbish at 24) and John White (Stanmore) mended it by using the cam thingy from a 7500. Next time it goes it'll be "Goodnight Vienna" - so I'd like to organise a replacement. Cheers (& HNY 2009).

Cor, my own cost £795! The cam is a bit dodgy on mine too but it's everything else that I wore out with all the re-recording that relegated mine to the shelf. I dust it off occasionally and run something but it's not really reliable enough for a proper show any longer. One day perhaps I'll get it all sorted but with 3 GS1200's there's not much point at the moment.

I don't know how high it will go, but I paid 350.00 for my Chinon 9500 (with optical sound as well), and I think I got that for a bargain. I wonder who will win it.

This looks to me like it is nearley new and almost unused. Taking that in mind, how much should this go up to when its still not as good as GS1200 in the long term. Obviously it also depends on the condition of the GS, but there are some nearly new GS's that only sell for around £700 on Ebay.

My SS1200 looks brand new but it's actually rather clapped out. Appearances can be deceiving.

I'd still pay up to a grand for a decent GS1200 if I needed one so I'd consider £700 cheap.

Good point John, but it looks new inside the back so I took it for being nearly new.

I think though the price for all GS1200's has come down in the last few years. A few years ago most GS1200's on main dealers lists were all around £1100. All were recently serviced and in excellent condition (the dealers dont sell rubbish). Today the same dealers are advertisting them around £900 in the same condition. On the point I made earlier, Ebay prices can fluctuate a bit so mabye is not a good yardstick.
