As any of you who have received Derann's latest newsletter may have read, apparently subscriptions to their very own "Film for the Collector" magazine have dropped dramatically recently.
It is stated that at the current subscription rate it is now running at a loss.
Personally, I think it would be a terrible loss to the 8mm scene and "real" film collecting scene in general if we were to lose this invaluable publication.

It is a great little magazine and I think most of you would agree that any of us who haven't re-subscribed need to do so, and that those of us who haven't subscribed before, at least give it a go.

Yes, it's a great read and well worth getting. I have never regretted my yearly subscription to the magazine (only £14!) and Steve at Derann does a great job of editing. You won't be disappointed!

I have been recieving Derann "Film For The Collector" since around 1993 never missed an issue. I pay a lot more getting it posted to New Zealand than collectors, say eg in England and its worth every penny. Its a great magazine and should be supported, often I will check back on old issues on various review's etc. I would hope that anyone thats serious about this hobby on this forum or elsewhere does make the effort like I do to support it.

I would purchase a subscription in a heartbeat, but didn't know about it until this week. Is this the newsletter that states GBP 8 per year? Does anyone know how to get a subscription if you live in the states? I subscribe to The Reel Image, Reel Deals, Group 9.5, Flickers and would happily have subscribed to Film for the Collector if I ever would have know how...Show me the light? ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)
oh and please tell me i won't have to send actual pound notes as that is why i can't subscribe to Projections.

Dino, the subscription for the Film for the Collector is £22.00 for 4 issues to the States (£14.00 for U.K - £18.00 for Europe.
It is published quarterly and is usually mentioned on the last page of the monthly newsletter, at the bottom of the page, alongside the postal rates for the films. I beleive you can pay by credit card.
Send an e-mail to Gary at Derann (gary at derann.co.uk) and I am sure he will be only too happy to sort it out for you, or any other potential subscriber.
P.S. A note to Gary - it may be useful to put a mention, and a subsciption link, onto the monthly USED SALES SUPER 8mm list on the website. It only mentions the Newsletter on there, not the magazine. Just a thought! (When is my article going into the mag???? ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

"Film for the Collector" is, as Keith points out, a magazine printed by Derann Film Services roughly 4 times each year.
It was started by super 8 champion Derek Simmonds, hero of all things super 8, back in September 1985 as a magazine for subscribers to Derann's then "Collector's Club".
The magazine also includes "Super 8 Film Review", which is overseen by Keith Wilton, master of all things super 8 and a gentlemen without whom this amazing hobby of ours would never have quite reached the great heights of both print and sound quality with which we are used to.
The magazine was always intended as a publication which belonged to the super 8 collector. Articles from collectors themselves were always the backbone of this magazine, including from the outset articles from fountains of knowledge such as Phil Sheard of "Classic Home Cinema".
Recently, several members of this very forum have had printed brilliant and enlightening articles which they have submitted.
Although super 8 releases may not be quite as abundant as they once were, the contributors to this marvelous magazine still put in masses of work and enthusiasm...
Personally, I feel quite guilty, as for many years now I have intended to send off the odd "article" to "Film for the Collector"...it can be about anything film related...your favourite film, cinemas of the past, generally, the fun we have all experienced using real film over the years which we want to share with each other and which I'm sure we would all like to read about and keep.
Of course, work and other commitments always get in the way, which is why I admire all the more the marvelous effort by the contributors to this publication.
Personally, I have decided over the next couple of weeks to get those long overdue articles hammered down and sent in...before it is too late.
If you haven't heard of "Film for the Collector", or have just let your subscription lapse, I'd urge you to give Derann a call tomorrow before we lose yet another foundation of this marvelous hobby of ours.
After all, as was stated right from the outset in 1985, this is a publication offered for and by "us", the real film collectors.

Funnily enough Rob I was only thinking about 'The Raiders Curse' a few days ago. I'm still looking forward to reading all about it.
I think the worrying news about this magazing is indicative of the way things are going in general. Please let's all support it as much as possible - it's not brilliant but it is a beacon of light for the Super 8 hobby.

Whilst on the subject of FFTC mag, i'd like to thank those who have allowed me to use thier stories/articles for this mag, Hopefully more people outside of this forum enjoyed Mike Peckhams "cinema in the dessert" which is a great read.
Thanks to Osi for his continued support & others,/ & now the big question???
Does anyone else on here have anything they can either put through to Derann for the next issue or to myself so i can do this for you,(of course i always ensure your name will be at the heading as i only present them for you i never take some elses credit,
I'm curruntly racking my brains for the next issues, its amazing how difficult it can be and certainly shows how much hard work must go into those masses of pages that KW does every month. (Hope you have a secretary)

I am probably going to get shot down here but is it the cost of printing and posting that makes it loss making? I also appreciate that not every collector uses the internet though I wonder how many do and therefore if it could be viable as a web based distribution.

I also think the lack of new Super 8 releases is making the middle "Super 8 film review" harder to write for keith. What about merging FFTC with International Movie Maker from Roy Salmons. Just a thought.

Film For The Collector is a forty page A4 size magazine that is published by Derann. Contents include news, reviews, articles of interest to collectors, a crossword, quizzes, advertisements, etc. Our last issue was number 69 and we attempt to issue four issues per year. Subscription rates per four issues are 14.00 UK, 18.00 Europe (air mail) or 22.00 rest of the world (air mail). Please forward any subscriptions to myself, gary@derann.co.uk

I was lucky enough to find out that the man who ran "Sunn Classic Pictures" of the 1970's (who released quite a few on thier nature films on Super 8 in the late 70's early 80's), lives just a short distance away from me, and I'm going to see if I can snag an interview with him. I'm betting that this would make a great article for the magazine, especially if he could speak about thier venture into Super 8, (which were released through Viacom Super 8, I believe).
Would you be interested in that kind of article?
