Hi.
Our fuse and our bulb went out on our Bolex 8mm projector. We purchased a new fuse (1.25amp/250volt) and a new bulb. For some reason we've gone through 2 new bulbs. They'll come on for less than 60 seconds and then just fade off...never to come back on.

Are we using the correct fuse? (If not, does anyone know where we can get the correct one?)

Thanks,
Jennifer (Patrick's Wife) [Smile]

Are you certain that the replacement lamps you've installed are the correct lamps? The standard lamp for the Bolex 18-5 Automatic is a Philips type 13113-C/04, rated at 8V 50W.

Hi,

The bulb can blow the fuse, but the fuse can't blow the bulb.

Fuses are the Kamikaze Pilots of the world of electricity. It's their job to sacrifice themselves when something is wrong, rather than the whole device and/or the building it's in going up in smoke they blow and stop the damage right there.

If anything your old fuse was on its last legs and the bulb took it out too. The question is why did the bulb fail?

Are you sure you are using the correct bulb? If you give us the code we can check it.

This could also be an issue of the bulb supply voltage or the cooling air, but we aren't there just yet.

The bulb we ordered is...

50 watt 8 volt RT44 Single Contact Prefocus Bayonet Flanged (P15sP30s) Base CXL/CXR Audio Visual / Photographic / Projector / Stage / Studio Incandescent Eiko Light Bulb

Purchased it from an online company. Is this the correct one?

Thanks for all your help!!

Jennifer

Yes CXL/CXR are the correct bulb types. Make sure you have the transformer setting at 117 volts for US mains (NOT 250 VOLTS). The transformer voltage is adjusted by rotating the little dial above the main control knob (with the front lamp house cover removed).
You also might try removing the bulb and checking the supplied voltage at the lamp socket with the projector switched on to the forward running position - it should of course be 8 volts.

At the back of my mind is the thought that there may have been some 12 volt 75 watt versions of the Bolex 18-5, which would have used a different bulb than the CXL/CXR. I don't know if that is the case or not - maybe some forum members can comment.

According to the instruction manual the correct fuses are for voltages up to 160 use a 1.25 amp fuse.
Above 160 volts use a 0.63 amp fuse.

Does that 50 watt lamp for the Bolex yield a brighter picture than the 150-watt DJL (I think) used by those old B&H 300 series so ubiquitous on eBay?
