Hi,

I'm going to go thru all my old Derann and Walton 4x400ft prints and see what the colour situation is. I will be posting soon, and maybe putting up pictures, too. Stay tuned!

Kevin.

Looking forward to that! Most of my Waltons have held their colour amazingly well. Most annoying thing was Walton's habit of not using a balance stripe in order to save money [Roll Eyes] on a lot of their releases. Especially annoying on the scope prints when the print is actually pin sharp but you cannot quite get 'em in focus all the way across 'cos of that missing balance stripe! Grrr! [Smile]

Yeah, that's right Rob, they had a habit of doing that. What Waltons do you have in your collection? I have a load of rare features and extracts..

Best regards, Kevin.

Don't think I have that many rare ones, Kevin but my most treasured is my 4x400ft of Dr. Who & the Daleks. When I was a kid I saved and saved for a new super 8 film for my birthday. I took all my savings to "The Cine Cabin", a film shop in Sunderland (did you know that one?)

Anyway there weren't many films left by that point as it was about 1981 and all going to video. The only film I really wanted was Dr. Who but is way over my budget. My dad bought it for me on his credit card and I loved it, but when I got Pa bit older I sold it to Perry's in order to buy a CD player! They were all the rage in the 80's!!!

Years later when I was replacing all the films I had stupidly sold I struggled to find a print of Dr. Who. Finally, when I found one I discovered that segments of the sound stripe were missing! I learned that this was a common problem on these prints, especially when a film cleaner had been used. I found another print eventually but it had the same problem. Then I realised that both prints had the soundtrack missing in different places and that it would be possible to male up a complete print by painstackingly editing the two prints together. I spent a few days doing this to make a great print with a complete soundtrack!

I felt so gulity and yet grateful when my dad bought the original print on his credit card many years ago. I think buying another two prints and spending ages editing them together all those years later finally proved to him how much I actually love this movie and how stupid I was to sell my original print in the first place!

Only recently I re-recorded the soundtrack from DVD. The colour is still great and as you can see I love this release! [Smile]

YES, "The Cine Cabin", I bought most of his ex library prints including 'Dr Who & The Daleks', (which I still have) 'One Million Years BC', 'Twins Of Evil', 'Vampire Circus', 'Beast Must Die', 'Futtocks End', 'The Sweeney - Ringer' and many many more! I must have bought about twenty + of his ex library prints and still have a lot of them. Keith was the guy's name..

Brings back memories, Kevin.

Hi Peter,

Yes, I think that was his name. He is a Laurel and Hardy 16mm collector! I used to go to the shop on my day off and spend about 45min to an hour talking about films!

*****************************************************

Well, I went thru all my 4x400ft Derann & Walton prints. Nearly all of my Derann's have gone red. Countess Dracula, Satans Skin being the worst.

My Walton features however, have all held very well. I ran reels from Northwest Frontier, Dr Who and The Daleks and Twins Of Evil, and they looked superb! Northwest Frontier was by far the best, and a good film to boot. If you get the chance of a copy get it..

Best regards, Kevin

Kev,

Thats a real shame about the Derann's which were probably printed on the cheaper Agfa stock to keep the selling prices lower.

The Walton prints used to sell for between £100-120 which was a lota dosh in those days!!!

Perhaps better film stock was reflected in the price?

I am pleased his is still selling film. I wonder if he has any Super 8 left, I must have bought most of them. [Big Grin]

Walton always had better prints and their content was good, too! I can remember that a 200ft extract cost about £19.99, which was a LOT of money in 1979!

As I have just mentioned in the Universal 8 thread, I have been sorting through a lot of my digests lately.

One thing I have noticed is the wonderful colour hold on the Walton digests.

Last night I ran both The Lady Vanishes and The Medussa Touch, both have excellent colour still. You have to love a 30 year old digest with strong blues and greens like both of these do. It is a pleasant change from all the faded Ken, Columbia and Universal 8 titles!

My Walton Tom and Jerry cartoons are holding a lot better than the MGM versions too.

Derann's quality went right out the rook once they switched to L.P.P. in the early 80's. I had a print of "Hoppity Goes to Town" from them, from the 70's on Fuji stock, and it was horribly faded. I then bought a re-issue of the same title from the early 80's and it hasn't faded a bit.

Too bad about those Derann horror's from the 70's.

Un Happy Halloween!
