I have a Bell and Howell Soundstar XJ. Online it says it plays both Super and Simple 8mm. However due to the smaller size hole on the reel I obviously can't put a simple 8 reel on it. Is there some sort of adapter I am missing or is this machine not able to play the smaller reels. Thanks.

That'll be Single 8 I presume.

The reels you have sound like Standard 8 which this projector doesn't accept.

You need either a Standard 8 or Dual gauge projector.

The dual 8 projectors that I have used have a plastic adapter that slides on the post that holds the spool. You may have to remove the adapter, they normally just slide off the post. Super 8 reels have a larger hole than regular 8 reels.

Actually it will play Single-8 sound also...same difference by the time it gets to the projector.

there are a number of dual gauge sound machines on ebay right now...a Eumig 824, an 822...an 810D. these play all 8mm gauges.... You have to change out the sprocket wheels and film gates to go from super8/single8 to standard and back.
