I've just obtained a recent issue of 'The Reel Image' from Steve Osborne and not surprisingly, some of the recent releases mentioned are ones available from CHC in the UK. But I was amazed to see other releases, such as a vintage German advertisement and the trailers to 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Quantum of Solace' that I've never seen mentioned in UK publications or even mentioned on forums. How come - do no members here have these? And if anyone does have them, how about a review or at least a comment so that people know that they are available.

It takes real dedication and initiative to produce new releases in this day and age, and if we want the hobby to continue, we really need to spread the word and not let releases be starved of publicity.

Hi Adrian-

I have bought several new items from Steve Osborne / The Reel Image here in the U.S. in the past month or so. I get confused as to which items are exclusive to Reel Image and which are released by CHC, but I do know they are from the same German lab. None the less, Steve and Phil seem to both be in this for the super 8 collector, and I think they are working together to get these great new releases put out on super 8.

One exclusive service from Reel Image is the stereo soundtracks for the recent trailer releases, which have been great. And Steve / Reel Image is just great to work with. He always charges very fair prices, and offers prompt, friendly service.

And speaking of NEW RELEASES........

I just got my most recent purchase from Steve (might be his exclusive release, not sure). Its a color Popeye cartoon from 1945, "For Better or for Nurse" . And let me tell you- Its FANTASTIC! The colors and sharpness is perfect. And the sound? Just as STRONG and clear as any super 8 release from the 70's and 80's [Smile] . I'm sorry to ramble on, but this is a good sign after some of the problems of recent years, and, honestly, they seem to have ironed all of the sound-stripe issues out, as is evident from my last several purchases.

I seem to have gotten a little off-topic (sorry [Cool] ), but I agree with you Adrian, we should be making sure people know about these recent and exclusive releases.

James.

James - thanks for your insight. I've heard that the lab are alreaedy starting to use polyester for some releases so I wondered if that applies to the Popeye release and helps explain the quality of the colour?

I'd guess that with some releases that both want to offer, Phil and Steve split costs such as producing negatives, and this helps make the releases viable for both of them, but I expect that doesn't apply in relation to releases that only one of them is inclined to offer. I'm sure that Phil hasn't so far offered the releases I mentioned, but on the other hand he has been selling two European animated films which maybe Steve hasn't stocked.

I hope all collectors will contribute to raising awareness of what is 'out there', because it's clear that anyone that doesn't subscribe to all the US and UK publications can easily be unaware of some releases, and no one will buy ones that they haven't heard about!

Jose,
Steve does have an email address that I found on this forum some time ago. I'm not sure if he checks it every day so you may not get a fast reply.
I don't want to state it here because I get the impression that he doesn't like to publicise it too much, but if you send me a message direct, with your email address, I'll send it to you.

I think he prefers phone, fax or mail contact over email.

I wonder why that is, as he must receive nearly all his overseas payments by Paypal, so I expect he must make frequent use of a PC? Considering that he seems to be a major dealer in new and used films, also sells new splicers, reels, etc, and publishes a magazine, he could certainly boost his business via the internet if he wished.

Is this magazine obtainable in the UK?

Michael - Steve sent me a form stating that - as Guy says - Phil Sheard is the UK agent for 'The Reel Image'. Annual subsciptions, that I presume are for 4 issues, are £12. I'm not certain yet if the cheque should be payable to Phil or CHC.
