Hello,
Some time ago my projector started to produce a rather unstable flickering image, that by now is so bad, that I can't use the machine. Could anybody tell me, what might be the trouble and how to repair it?

Have you given the film gate a good clean?
The Bauers need regular cleaning of the film path.

Make sure there is no fluff stuck on the claw finger tip. Remove the pressure plate assembly and clean the aperture with some spirit to remove wax or other debris. Let us know if that helps the picture stability.

Hello Frank,

thanks for your help.
I took out the pressure plate and carefully cleaned the film path and the pressure plate assembly. I didn't have any spirit available, so I just dry cleaned everything.
There was nothing stuck on the claws, however, is it possible, that the claws wear off? Or maybe, that some kind of shift between the gear regulating the shutter and the claws took place (I hope that is understandable)? Or do you or anybody else have another idea?

Hi Philip

The claw tip does not wear but the cam peg & track will wear effecting depth. If penetration is now insufficient, flickering & loop dropping will start to occur especially at faster speeds.

It may need lubing & adjusting to restore claw depth of penetration into the film.

This is achieved by sliding the cam track & shutter assembly forward on the shuttershaft. A tiny pair of grubscrews in the hub secure the shutter.

Make sure the claw then retracts below the aperture plate level to ensure the film is cleared properly between frames.

Another adjustment to check on Bauers. The pressure plate has an adjuster with a lock nut near the pivot pin. This is to increase the pressure plate to film pressure. Adjust this with power turned off & selector knob set to project. Adjust the tiny lockable screw till the pressure plate springs are 1/4 compressed.

If you have set it up correctly there should be no more flickering when projecting.

Hello Frank,
I tried to increase the pressure plate to film pressure by adjusting the excenter screw you told me. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. Since I am not sufficiently skilled to take the projector apart, I think I should look for somebody who repairs Bauer machines.

Run projector at both speeds without film.
If claw mechanism makes noise like a sewing maschine, than claw and cam are worn down - need special grease - and have to be replaced.
If projector had been used without regreasing you would also recognise it by shifting frame up and down whilst projecting a film. In one direction it is difficult to get frame line out of picture on screen.

thanks very much for your help. I think, too, that the claw mechanism needs replacing. I have just had a call with Mr Schacherl, who is recommended as a Bauer and Braun expert somwhere else in this forum. He has confirmed, that by the symptoms I told him, adjustment would not be sufficient. Since Mr Schacherl's shop is close to my work I can personally deliver my projector...
