Well, I got my newly acquired Elmo up and running. Didn't need an 88th projector, but wanted to see what all the fuss was about these Elmos. Fixed the focus knob, but not sure how long that would last so got another complete lens barrel fixture (thanks Claus)and just got my new belts today. It is indeed a nice running machine. Only problem is it is the ST-1200 Magnetic model and will not play optical prints. So what is it with the Super 8 magnetic prints? Were any produced commercially or were these just for the home user to record via the mic onto the print?

Barry,

The vast majority of commercially made Super 8mm releases were magnetic sound. The optical exceptions were mostly made for distribution to airlines, armed forces, etc. A detailed thread about optical prints can be found here.

Ahaa! Thanks Doug. Odd that older 16mm were mostly optical and then newer super 8mm was magnetic. I loaded up a print of Junior Bonner and the projector sounded great and ran perfectly.
