I have several tape splicers: Kodak Presstape, Wurker, Ciro, and Baia. My favorite is the Wurker followed by the Ciro.

When I make tape splices I use the Bolex tape splicer. It works the same way as the CIR where it punches the holes in the tape. It's fairly simple to use and makes great splices. Most of the time I use the Bolex 8mm/Super 8 Beveled Cement Splicer.

I use a Wurker, which I don't think you could beat. I use Wurker splices if the frames being spliced are seen, or the much more economical Kood patches if I'm adding leader. As the Kood splices overlap the sprocket edge of the film, they are bound to cause momentary sideways movement.

Adrian, I never used a WURKER, but I feel the same way about my CIRO/GUILLOTINE tape splices. They are still not noticeable and noiseless going through the projector on films I made over 35 years ago, and I'm talking about dozens of splices in some of my 400' reels. They only cover TWO frames of film, and when made right (with smooth jointures of the film ends and taking care that the tape punches from the sprocket holes are removed), They're very reliable, and the main sound stripe isn't covered, so your sound is smooth. Also, very economical, as one roll of tape goes a long way.

Joe - I only have limited knowledge of CIRO Super 8 splicers (despite using them for 16mm) but I get the impression that there's a significant difference in quality between the all metal ones and the partly plastic ones. No doubt yours is the all metal type and has pins of optimum size. I briefly had a like new plastic matrix model and found the results disappointing.

Adrian, I have one of the plastic CIR splicers. The plastic is warped or something because the holes don't line up exactly right. The Bolex tape splicer I have is metal and very well built. It makes great splices, I was amazed at how smooth it passes through the projector. It's a little different than the CIR in how it operates but it's the same principle.

I actually have metal CIR splicers for 16mm (which doubles as 8mm), Super 8, and 9.5mm and they all work great for projection. The key is to keep the punch holes clear, and double check the splices in case some of the tape gets left as a hanging chad? brad? tad? [Razz]

because that is the only possible drawback that could cause interference..Otherwise they are great and save so much time...The press tape have the advantage of the precut perf holes, but I have never been crazy about the adhesive on those...

Bryan - I wondered if your Bolex uses the same tape as a CIRO? They seem scarce - I've never seen one.

Adrian, it does use the same tape as the CIRO, I just ordered a few rolls, they should last me a decade or so. They are kind of rare but I do see them on ebay every now and then. There are two on there right now. Usually the seller wants too much for them.

I use a Fuji (takes a pre-perf roll) for super 8 and a Kodak Presstape for reg 8 and 16mm.

I also have a plastic CIRO (un-perf roll) that I used to use for super 8. I still use it to attach leader but I have fallen in love with the metal Fuji! Very easy and quick to use and perfect splice every time.
