The first issue of Classic Home Cinema's Film Collector magazine is coming out this month. This will be a must have for all of us. Keith Wilton's Super 8 Film Review is featured along with articles about Laurel and Hardy, Felix, Seasonal Film Shows, Robbie The Robot and Sergio Leone. Let's show strong support for this undertaking by Phil Sheard and subscribe today.
Film Collector will be published 3 times a year. Subscriptions: £15 UK, £18 Europe, £20 everywhere else.
Credit cards are accepted.
Information can be found at Classic's web site under News and Events.

What is going to be in the magazine? Are these thick magazines or just normal size? Because I find 20 is allot if it was just a standard magazine size since there are only 3 a year. and i do understand that he isn't a big company or anything.
Posted by John Clancy (Member # 49) on January 19, 2012, 04:58 AM:
Grant, this is a non-profit making venture by Classic. It will be an A4 magazine with a colour cover on glossy or good quality paper (unlike the rubbish Derann's magazine was printed on which was detrimental to the overall sales of that mag). It will cost around £2 per issue to send a copy to the Americas so £20 isn't a lot when you look at it.
This is something for our hobby that will help keep things going. The hobby needs a magazine and this looks like it will fill the bill.
Posted by Tom Photiou (Member # 130) on January 19, 2012, 01:11 PM:
&one of the most important things to remeber here is that it is by the collector for the collector so if anyone can do an article which is film related (but not DVD or blu ray etc)it will help to keep it going, it needs as much input from collectors as possible. To be fair Derann did keep on stipulating that lack of input by collectors were very nearly the death of the FFTC so hopfully we can all do a little bit.
In fact, as an idea, for ONE night only why not move away from your PC or laptop and dedicate your input to the new mag, it may give Phil enough for several editions.
Posted by Grant Fitzgerald (Member # 2796) on January 19, 2012, 01:25 PM:
What is going to be included in the magazine. What are the articles going to be like?
Posted by Rob Young. (Member # 131) on January 19, 2012, 06:23 PM:
Grant, a new film collecting magazine is like a box of chocolates...
Seriously, please, can we all support Phil's new publication...
I'm posting off my cheque tomorrow. I also understand that this magazine is going to make no profit, but thanks to the effort of all it's contributors will maybe help to keep our beloved hobby alive in print.
C'mon, what's a few £...$...
Live dangerously!!!
PS. I understand the contributers are all "top notch!!!"
PPS. Besides Derek, I've never met a man so devoted beyond reason (and trust me, this guy can't be in super 8 for the money) other than Mr. P. Sheard.
Please let's all support this new venture...
Posted by Grant Fitzgerald (Member # 2796) on January 19, 2012, 06:33 PM:
I want to get it, ugh IDK $30 for 3. I mean I know it is a good cause and everything. I think I would rater have a film though.
Posted by Rob Young. (Member # 131) on January 19, 2012, 06:40 PM:
Well, Grant, that's your decision.
But think of the extra enjoyment you'll have, running your next film, knowing that there is a vibrant, supportive, film collecting community behind you, willing to support a brand new publication in print, which you can show to your mates and say, "look, this isn't old hat, people are really into this..."
And which you can contribute to as well...
Posted by Grant Fitzgerald (Member # 2796) on January 19, 2012, 06:43 PM:
So what is in this magazine? I saw in Douglas' description. But does it have screen pictures or list of films that are out or anything?
Posted by Rob Young. (Member # 131) on January 19, 2012, 06:51 PM:
Grant, I believe the idea (as with "Film For The Collector" before it) is that this magazine will thrive from input from collectors, so why not email Phil and try the 1st issue, then contribute to future publications with what you feel would improve it...I'm sure this is the motive behind this publication and would be welcome.
Posted by Winbert Hutahaean (Member # 58) on January 19, 2012, 07:48 PM:
And I think as in many hobby magazines like this if you contribute with article while you will not get payment at least you will have free magazine at your door.
So perhaps, Grant you can write an article based on your first experience with 8mm as you are quite new in this hobby.
Cheers

Am I able to pay per issue. I would be much more willing to do that then spend all the money at once. So you can make articles? and send them in. That is really cool!

Grant
It is kind of the difference between an active hobby, or an activity for a retro hobbyist. Most of us are still trying to keep this an active hobby, and so an active magazine is a very important aspect, and you might be surprised to learn that many film collectors do not do their dealings on the web..
Also if you are worried about the expense of a magazine coming from the UK, why not start by subscribing to Steve Osborne's Reel Image here in the states as Phil has a regular column in it... I think soon enough you might realize that more often than not an active film collecting magazine will actually save you more money than it will cost...what I mean is it will help you in choosing the films you want to purchase, it will put you in touch with other collectors who may have films for sale much cheaper than ebay, it will help you avoid the pitfalls with equipment that can now get expensive since no one makes new projectors that are worth running your films through. There are many reasons why an active magazine is a great thing!
Posted by John Clancy (Member # 49) on January 20, 2012, 03:22 AM:
'Super 8 Film Review' will continue within the central pages as a magazine within a magazine. I put a 2003 issue of this up for all to see on top of the film review page of www.bfcc.biz. Take a look Grant.
We expect the other articles within this magazine to be somewhat better than a lot of those in Film For The Collector towards the end. Other than the regular things such as 'Super 8 Film Review' and 'Techy Tips' there really wasn't a lot to it and that was largely down to the poor nature of the printing which didn't encourage good contributions. Things will be different with a professionally printed magazine that is being done for the right reasons.

Wow! I didn't realize any of this guys, about the active hobby you were talking about. So if I subscribe not only will it give me article but list of people to buy more films from and possibly even cheaper? Also the link you sent John didn't work for me. Thank you guys for helping me understand.
Ordering the first issue!

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on January 20, 2012, 06:31 PM:
Grant - I'm sure the magazine will have some ads from dealers and collectors, but I wouldn't expect too many in the first issue as obviously it's a new venture.
I think the 'active hobby' aspect, as well as giving subscribers the chance to contribute, is partly helping the hobby survive by communicating what is happening. E.g. new releases and events cannot be viable if many collectors don't find out about them. This magazine will cover and review new releases, so readers will learn about ones that don't get mentioned on forums. So basically, if there are not enough subscribers to make the magazine viable, this will also have a damaging result in relation to releases and events.
Posted by Grant Fitzgerald (Member # 2796) on January 20, 2012, 06:47 PM:
New releases? They still make new films? Who does?

Just received my copy this morning. I haven't had the chance to read it all yet but first impressions are very favourable.
Posted by John Clancy (Member # 49) on January 21, 2012, 04:25 AM:
There's a couple of chaps in Germany who put out occasional new releases, Classic Home Cinema, LA Films (Larry Arpin on this forum) and Giosi Films recently issued a US advert reel. Sadly Derann ceased new releases when the UK lab was closed and then folded shortly after themselves.
The link to the British Film Collectors Convention is www.bfcc.biz - I'll try to remember not to end a sentence after a link in future as this forum software can't handle it.

Hi lads, I agree with John Clancy regarding Phil Sheards mag,
the old adage "If you don't use it,you lose it!"I received mine
on Saturday and for a first issue it's most impressive, true there
aren't many ads but it is issue 1 and that will certainly change.
The reason Deranns mag became dire was that it didn't allow
other people to push product that they thought was in competition with them.As for a lack of articles I despair as it does
go against the grain when you take time to write literate and
researched stuff to be fobbed off with half baked excuses as to
why your item hasn't appeared and then listen to the whining
from the Derann camp that it's our mag and they need our
support.Well, in my humble opinion Film for the Collector
suffered a body blow when Dave Worrall left and a double
whammy when poor Derek died thus the mag quickly became
a Staff magazine.
I am of the belief that had Derek Simmonds been alive that
business would still be here in one form or another,I've known
Derek for more years than I care to remember and one thing
he was,he was a business man and a very good business man
remember when Kodak stopped pre striped film, it didn't stop
"Del boy" Simmonds,we were his bread and butter and he
knew that but it is a two way street and he depended on our
support.Well unfortunately Derek has gone but we still have
a man who has invested in this hobby of ours and I think it's
time to show some support for PHIL SHEARD who repeatedly
sticks his neck out and I don't think a few pounds a year is asking too much to subscribe to a cracking little mag.Over to you gentlemen.

Hi Hugh, it seems to me that you have been in this film collecting hobby for quite long. Funny you just join now. Where have you been?
Hopefully you will post more in this forum to share your expertise and knowledge for the benefit of other forum's members.
This come to my mind that there are still a lot of collectors not joining this forum yet.
cheers

I have just ordered the first issue through E-bay. I shall get in touch with CHC with view to a subscription. These are great news for us collectors. Phil deserves our support to his initiative.
Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 25, 2012, 06:48 PM:
Hi Winbert, as you rightly say I have been in film collecting a long
time(I've even had to educate Ged on some of the past Derann
releases as when I started buying from Derann, Dereks Manager
was a chap called Brian Dean and between them they ran the
hire & sales dept which was mainly std(regular) 8mm.As to
where I've been I contributed to various mags including
"Movie Maker" and Paul Van Somerens super 8 collector and
even used to loan films I'd had inported to Bill Davison for review in the "Movie Maker" although this is new country to me
as I've only just got a computer and am a"new kid on the block"
as it were, but I still look back on the days when a handful of
little 200' b/w films were enough to make you grin like a bag of
chips, remember we were a simple people then. How times have
changed.

Hugh, thanks for sharing. As most of us are not in film collecting during Derann first year (1970s) could you share in thsi forum some of the stories.
Of course do not post here, but instead open a new thread. The following topics must be of interest of this forum members:
- How film hire departments operating (price, titles, howthe monitor scratch etc)
- How they choose a title to be released
- How they made a contract with studios (1970/80 must be different with the 1990s/2000)
- What title is the most popular Derann release
- How they market their releases (1970/80 must be differnt with 1990s/2000)
- etc...etc...
Could you share us please (again in different thread, not here).

I bought this magazine on Ebay!
I paid with Paypal and I asked Phil Sheard if he would also pay with Paypal for all items sold by Classic Home Cinema! He said NO! I do not know why he does not accept this payment method.
I hesitate to give my details to my Visa card in an unsecured site
Posted by Grant Fitzgerald (Member # 2796) on January 26, 2012, 11:41 AM:
I wish he would use paypal too. It is so much easier!

No Tom,
If payment is funded from our bank account or paypal balance, no fee at all.
If payment is funded from Credit Card there is 2.5 - 4% fee.
So basically the fee is almost the same with payment taken from direct CC (no through Paypal).
I too always don't understand people to avoid paypal just because of fee.
In fact, if fee is the concern, CHC (or was Derann) can ask payment funded by paypal balance or bank account, so no fee at all, compared to what they are doing now with CC.

Hello Winbert and thankyou for those kind words unfortunately
I know very little of how deals were made,or how films were even
selected for release I'm much like your good self just an
enthusiast who was very grateful for the releases on offer. As to
which of there releaes was the most popular I would hazard a
guess and say Flynns "Robin Hood".As you say we must have
our discussion in a different category
Posted by Antoine Orsero (Member # 41) on January 27, 2012, 06:47 AM:
It would suffice that it slightly increases the transport costs to offset expenses Paypal

Joe, while I certainly look forward to receiving the magazine, I have found that spelling accuracy is apparently not a prerequisite for film collector publications! A good edit job is usually called for!
Posted by Joe Taffis (Member # 4) on January 28, 2012, 07:16 PM:
John, I just thought it was funny, and I know some words are not always spelled the same. The magazine itself is great, with very nice quality. I hope every member supports it by subscribing! I would also like to see Phil & Steve posting CHC and REEL IMAGE updates on this forum.

Hugh - I was astonished to read (if I've interpreted your post correctly) that you submitted articles for FFTC that were not included, and there was no clear reason for this. If so, I'd be curious to have some idea of what we never got to see. Maybe you can still send one or more to Phil for the new magazine?

Hello Tom and thanks for the interest in dealings I've had over the
years some good, some not so,as I'm sure most collectors can.I
I feel a bit like Grandpa Simpson with tales of yore that could go

However one dealer I dealt with way back in the mid seventies
was a gentleman by the name of Miel Koomen who ran the film
company known as MIKO STUDIO where I did quite a bit of buying
imported German and Italian prints of mainly Italian Westerns of
which I'm very fond.Imagine my suprise when a bundle of
catalogues came through the post with a letter telling me to
select any titles I wished as he was going on holiday to Italy and
he would bring them back with him.I had never met the man
and he was prepared to do this for me.Of course I selected the
titles I wanted, but I was touched by the gesture and have never forgotten it.i'm sure other collectors out there including
you Tom have experiences that are similar
