Hi guys

Does anyone have an opinion on 3ccd security camera with FW capture unit vs a 3ccd DV Cam for off the gate telecine?

Any opinions would be great

I don't think you can make a blanket statement, one versus the other. I think you need to compare the quality of the two camera heads. Things to consider: chip size, S/N ratio, resolution, color quality, lens quality, menu tweaks such as black stretch, gamma, etc. All other things being equal, larger chips are better. If it is possible to compare the two cameras, I would.

There is not any specific reason why one camera should be better than another for "off the gate" any more than one would be better than another for "off the wall" or "aerial image" or any other full frame method. The TYPE of transfer does not affect which camera should be used.
John is right; the only way to evaluate which camera is better for use is by a physical performance test of the ALL the function variants of ALL the cameras.
Making a general prediction comparing UNLIKE devices is very unwise.

My current cam is a panasonic NG-GS230

And I have looking at this

1/3" CCD is referring to the diagonal size of the chip...1/3". This is a single chip camera. It looks like it's black & white as well. If you are comparing this security camera to your Panasonic NG-GS230, even though it is a consumer model, I would think the Panasonic would perform better.

Yes, the listing is ambiguous for a novice.

I'm not having much luck finding a 3ccd camera on eBay, guess I need to hunt specific models working well for telècine.

You may find good 3-CCD cameras useful for telecine work to be expensive. I use a Sony DXC-390, which is a 3-CCD camera head that accepts c-mount lenses. You could also pick up a used ENG camera and use it with some kind of telecine device that will handle zoom lenses.

At those prices I am going to stick with my div cam, never knew 3ccd cams where so expensive.
