My recent inquiries to Paul Foster, (as he just had a copy of "Magical Mystery Tour" on his list, now sold), has reminded me of a question I have wanted to ask of our UK (and abroad from the US, as well mas in the US) brethren of this forum ...

Was there ever a printing of this title in the UK, and if so, was it on a good low fade stock?

As far as I have seen, all the prints in the US, made in the US, of this title, have always been on Eastman quick fade stock and has varying degrees of fade.

Whats the word, ladies and gentlemen?

Also, if the person who bought "magical Mystery Tour" from Paul Foster, if they are a member of this forum, could you be so kind as to let me know how the color is on the print you have bought, and if it is on low fade stock?

Osi - I have never seen a low fade print of this title...but I think the Niles prints are better than the Hollywood Film Exchange prints. The trouble is all the prints 8mm and 16mm made in the 70's were dupey because the master material was so bad. It wasn't until Apple restored the footage for the laser disc release in the late 80's that the footage was spruced up and the color somewhat restored (even the DVD isn't great.). I was curious about the Paul Foster print but I doubt it's very good.

Brian, my HFE print is much better both image and soundwise than the NILES print I had. Not sure what stock it is; I never got into checking that on my films. It has some fade, but not too much. I think my storage conditions have a lot to do with that. As far as sound goes, I wouldn't want to mess with the original monaural soundtrack. I would like to have it in stereo, but little differences in the mix (especially the title tune)and the music to picture sync would be lost, like they are on the DVD and video cassette stereo releases.

I have a kodachrome print which came from someone associated with the production so doubt that there are many more out there. All other prints I have seen were from secondary materials so the colour was poor even if not faded.

Yes 16mm kodachrome. I don't think there was any official prints available to collectors on any gauge but I'm not 100% about that. Some 16mm prints were made for non theatrical libraries I believe but from memory they were very poor. Several companies in the US bootlegged the title.

Joe's right, sad but true.

Hollywood Films edition, (3X400ft) has a sharper less grainly image than the Niles print, but they are from the same lackluster color originals. I would be curious to see how the "HFE" prints of this title have held up.

Also, I have heard that while the 3X400ft Niles fades badly, the 400ft digest of this title has held it's color better.
