Over the years I have had several copies of the Universal 8 3-D 400 foot version of " Creature from the Black Lagoon " . I originally bought it new upon it's release in 1978 and I thought the 3-D glasses were Yellow and Green . Is this correct ? All the other prints I purchased always had the usual Blue / Red glasses with them , but they were used .
The same goes for THE MAD MAGICIAN . I recently purchased from Joe an EXCELLENT print with the original RED / Green Opera glasses . All previous prints I had of this came with Red / Blue glasses .
Can anyone out there verify the correct color of 3-D glasses for CREATURE ??

The copy I had came with red/green glasses. The 3D effects we OK but I would get a headache from watching them. [Eek!]

I have two prints of CREATURE and the 3D effects on both, after fading, are still not too bad. Use the red / blue glasses, with the red over the right eye.

I did use the MAD MAGICIAN glasses mentioned in my post to watch CREATURE with but the 3-D effect was not quite what I remembered ; especially when the Creature climbs onto the boat and breaks the little chain ; I recall the bar actually sticking right into the living room !

Part of the problem is some prints have fading as you well know. If you are referring to my former print of "The Mad Magician", it had no fade issues. The Columbia Logo at the start is in full color with no signs of fading. It serves a useful purpose as a way to check the color. But its strange that they used a color logo when it actually originally was in B&W. So it should be Duo-Color like the rest of the Digest. The glasses that came with it are indeed Red & Green and that is how it was sold. Universal used Red & Cyan (Blue). In theaters when they re-released Creature and Outer Space the glasses were also Red & Cyan. What creates issues is the limitations of the Anaglyphic process itself. For nontheatrical use that process was the only viable option. But its not as effective and also can be marred by Lab Work and the color on the print. On top of that, some viewers have issues with 3-D presentations. Remember, when originally released the presentation used the Polaroid system with two projectors which when done properly was FAR superior. As the Super 8 prints fade the 3-D diminishes. All you can do is try both color glasses in such a case and use what works best for you. In the case of "The Mad Magician" some scenes have very little 3-D effect. It has to be because of the way it was printed because other scenes have noticeable depth. It was like that when I bought it new years ago. I recall seeing "It Came From Outer Space" in a theatrical anaglyphic presentation. Some scenes had very little depth but with what was in the scene it should have been there. Well, when it was shown originally in Polarized two projector 3-D it was right in your face!

When Derann re-released both U-8 3D titles, they provided red-green glasses, which is probably why Pat got a headache!

You mean I sold all 3 of my 3D films for nothing? I had "Craature" "Mad Magician" and "It Came From Outer Space". They all came with red/green glasses. I got a headache watching either of them. So I sold them. Had I known I would have bought new glasses. Well, now I will just buy them again. The search is on! [Eek!]

Not so fast......as Joe said, Mad Magician came with Red-Green glasses, and that works wonderfully for that film.
I know quite a few people who can only take 3D for a short period of time. Next time you're near New York, of if you come to CineSea, we can have a 3D marathon!

Anaglyphic 3D has always been problematic. Unless the color printing is spot on you always get'cross talk' between the left and right images, which leads to double image effects. This is even more of a problem on Super 8mm. My Derann print of 'Creature' is about as good (or bad!) as the original U8 release. Some scenes have good 3D effect, and some are very flat, and there is quite a bit of double imageing. I have tried re/green and red/cyan glasses, with the latter seming to work the best.
Overall, I would have much preferred a regular 2D black and white version of this otherwise excellent digest.

It may be excellent, but Universal 8 was lazy with their editing. Castle Films did a much better job of condensing the story. The first 2 or 3 minutes explain why they are in the Amazon. I expected that to be in the Universal 8 Digest. Instead, it starts well into the film's storyline. You would think they would have included what follows directly after the main titles in the theatrical version. It showed off the 3-D and explains exactly why the expedition is in the Black Lagoon. Now "It Came From Outer Space" was extremely well edited right down to the credits at the end of the digest.

That answers a few questions....i have the 3D creature too,the film came with the original glasses,results vary from not bad to a bad effect, my print is a bit faded which might be the problem.
I also have a super8 b&w short called terror in 3D - i think - it is a 10 min demo of 3D with clips from the mummy and other 3D films, fun but the 3D results vary.
But both are nice to have in my collection thou.

A couple of years ago,I think it was Channel Four did a broadcast
of 3D films of Queen Elizabeths Coronation and various other films
of the Royal Family in Anaglyph 3D, the specs were supplied in copies of the TV TIMES.the effect was awesome,later on through
the week, they showed the film "Flesh for Frankenstein", my
living room was awash with entrails and severed limbs, I have
never seen 3D as good as that, even though I have a polarised lens,that experience takes some beating.

Quite right Huge. My first VHS 3D off air recording was from the early 1980's when they broadcast some test materials which also included as you say some scenes of the Coronation which was also filmed in colour 3D at the time. Interesting to look back on this and a good bit of TV history recorded on the old Feguson HR-3300 VCR

Note the anaglyphic system used for the broadcast was Color-Code, a 'refined' Yellow/Blue system that’s supposed to preserve more of the natural colours but all the same it's anaglyph (comic book 3D) and as a consequence is always a compromise. Personally I believe the anaglyph system used for movie projection did more harm than good to the perception of 3D cinema but at least modern cinema goers are now seeing the perfection of 3D projections with the roll-out of digital presentations.

That said as a kid anaglyph on 8mm was always a crowd pleaser even if it was restricted to silent Standard 8mm hand cranked 50’ 3 Stooges or 200’ Mad Magicians! BTW Did you also have those ‘The Boldest Look You Ever Took In Paradisio’ hand-held anaglyph specs in your 200’ Columbia print of Mad Magician and did you know those specs were printed for a 1962 soft porn film release called ‘Paradisio’?!

For those who are open minded Universal Blu-Ray release THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in 3D Blu-Ray next month and I can’t wait to project it with my 3D HD DLP projector on my 12' screen having spent years with field-sequential DVD versions and a 16mm full length anaglyph print (up for sale soon on ebay no doubt!)...

Hi Rick. Thanks for the link to Channel 4. Unfortunately, the clips won't stream for us across the pond. They do look interesting, though. I also have the U-8 400'er and it is really faded. There's just enough 3-D effect left for it to be discernible, but not by much. When it finally fades altogether - to the trash heap it goes. No sense in keeping a duo-color print that has no color and is blurry. A shame it will be. I paid $60US for it back around 1981.

I got these two titles (Creature an It Came) from Elyas with the glasses (not original) where red on right eyes.

I ordered another glasses which has red on left eyes.

can we use either one? otherwise which one is the correct glasses? red on right or left?
