I still think the best alternative would be to include this as Wikipedia pages because it's such a common place for the general public.

It will not be as flexible as a true database, but Wikipedia still has a good search functionality

I can take on the task to start such a project. Wikipedia requires source references for the material posted, but hopefully I can find help for that here.

What do you think? I start small with a Ken film list and take it from there.

Wouldn't it make more sense,instead of covering the well worn
path of releases everyone is familiar with,go for the not so well
known, the obscure,diverse and rare releases,that way it would
be serving a purpose,instead of regurgitating the catalogues that
we know by heart and has been done before.

That is a good idea, but of course the list should contain all info we have. Cover scans, ruuning time, color or B/W, sound or silent, dubbed or original language, title as well as the changed titles I read in another post (ie if they have different names)

Hugh, for me the heart of Super 8mm is actually those digests (hence no rare) because it is only in super 8mm format we can find this type of films.

Digest is not found anywhere, nor Betamax, VHS, DVD, etc. In fact, for today's perspective digesting a movie is considered copyrights infringement.

With the availability of database of these digests in Wikipedia, the non-collectors will know that long time ago people enjoying movies in different way and perhaps will try to join.

ps: In some German DVD releases beside the usual behind the scenes, some also included the 1970s digests of the same film as bonuses. This is to show how digests are special.

That is all very true Winbert,but personally I couldn't care less
about the general public and their perspectives of the hobby.If
they're interested,they will get involved.As for S/8 being the first
for digests, this was done many years ago for 9.5 users, who
could buy condensed versions of features.It was done then on std
8mm and in some cases on 16mm.So in effect S/8 was a bit
behind the other gauges in the concept of condensations.The idea
of listing releases seldom seen would be of more benefit to the
members of this forum, rather than the misinformation peddled
on Wikipedia for the masses.

No offense Hugh, since I'm a complete newbie I have no interest in the rare and obscure, and as a newbie I know just about nothing. So for me, other newbies, and future newbies I think this is a great idea. In fact I've allready started.

Winbert, I am "now" a registred Wikipedia contributor, so if you and maybe other people here on the forum will help me with lists, data, and references to catalogues etc I will do this.

It will be fun!

Hi Vidar and Jan,the easiest way is to obtain catalogues or visit
some of the sites Laksmi and Winbert put up.There were more
a few weeks ago put up by Michael and Jean Marc and there
must be lots out there already waiting to be discovered.You've
got to take on board that the majority of people don't really
care that much,they can watch blu ray a lot cheaper,more
conveniently than going back to watching films on 8/16mm.
The general public have shunned film,therefore what is the point to compiling a list of stuff they aren't interested in.Any
info they want is already out there,a visit to ebay proves this.
That is why I suggested to list the stuff that rarely if ever
surfaces, and that would be of use to members of your forum.
To the public at large,film has gone the way of video,don't get
me wrong,I LOVE film with a passion,I've just bought "Castle
of Blood" on 16mm from the US,plus postage,plus customs for
a film I already own on DVD, members of the public would think
I was certifiable, but that's the difference.

Hugh, I understand your point of view and agree on some of - film is in a sense "dead" and to the community it would certainly be of interest with listings of the more obscure prints. But to me that's for somebody else to do.

I will start another thread dedicated to Super 8 on Wikipedia.
