Since this is a 35mm print, basically it belongs to studio. So if George Lucas sees this he can come and collect his stolen stuff

Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 04, 2013, 05:29 AM:

That includes any print on 36mm or 16mm,since these prints
were never actually for sale, hence the rider "No rights given or
implied, sold from one collector to another" when prints are sold.If Lucas did see it,
I wouldn't put it past him to try to claim it, he doesn't actually
want anyone to have recollection of the original, reasons best
known to him.

I just realize that Star Wars is now owned by Disney. And all rights are also transferred to Disney. So Disney may also involve to get this print back.

ps: CMIIW, I think 16mm is different case because Studios may sell the prints. It can be seen in some libraries that they bought the prints from Studio hence they could re-sell (unless there was a specific agreement restricting this).

I can remember when it was illegal to have 16mm prints or import
them into this country, since then the law has relaxed, but the
fact remains that 16mm prints were not for sale.I can imagine it
must annoy Lucas that there are prints of his first attempt still
circulating, that's one good reason to have one.

You could definately buy 16mm in the U.S.A. back in the 60's, 70's, etc.

Castle Films was one company that I remember, as well as Blackhawk Films.

James.

Aaah.... yes that is a strong example that Universal8 (Castle) sold 16mm to public.

In fact Blackhawk catalog also provides 16mm prints for sale.

That's true, but these were edited highlights, feature films on 16mm were impounded by customs in the UK.

Blackhawk did sell some full length features on 16mm and possibly Thunderbird Films, considering they had the rights to sell complete 16mm episodes of some Star Trek titles, but I appreciate that features were not generally on open sale. I'd imagine that the legal position in the UK may possibly have changed partly as a result of the large numbers of features that went into circulation as a result of US TV stations selling/disposing of them, but I have never discovered whether distributors considered this OK or not. But presumably these prints were not considered the property of the distributors in the way that would normally apply to prints in libraries.

I was always under the assumption that if a title fell into the "public domain" catagory, it could be released in ANY format, be it 16, 35, or whatever.

James.

Back in the '80s the late Ken Smith of Ritz Films was telling me
that even then, 35mm was a non starter trying to get them past
Customs in the UK.For some of the stuff put out by ligitimate
companies on 16mm, there didn't seem to be a problem, but for
anything else, it was frowned upon.Thankfully,it's more relaxed
now,but it wasn't always the case.

I do remember that Disney was VERY protective of their prints on 16mm. They definately did not sell 16mm feature prints at all.

It still amazes me that the late Derrick Simmons of Derann was able to strike a deal to release super 8 prints of their classic feature films. Simply amazing.

James.

I was at the Blackpool event when he had done the deal with Disney, and he had invited as Guest Speaker, A young lady from
the Disney Corp. who would answer any questions that we might
have.Queries were coming from the floor, but answers came there
none, she couldn't let anyone know what was being given clearance and when. A waste of time.I was tempted to ask about
"20,000 Leagues" but thought better of it
On the whole, Derek Simmonds kept the hobby afloat, and even
though I am not a Disney fan ( Derek told me in confidence,
neither was he) he done them proud with some very nice prints
and kept a lot of folks happy.

If Disney own the rights to this print on ebay, I don't envy the seller!!

James the thing to note with Disney is that Derek worked the deal for the UK so he was dealing with the UK Disney folks..I have friends who work Disney releasing all sorts of old questionable material such as Song of the South, etc. and it is really ONLY the US Disney that are the copyright nazi's...The departments outside of the US are very open to all sorts of marketing ideas at the right prices. Let's face it even when it comes to DVD's the only reason they were ever regionally coded was because the US studio folks did not want the US people to be able to play discs purchased from outside of the US, whereas the outside of the US departments were perfectly happy to have one NTSC system, one Pal system, one SECAM.. This is why most European players are all region, and US players are region 1 only. I think if you look the Derann deal does not truly allow sales to the US...

and Hugh if you know where there is a 36mm print of star wars and system I want it, that is right up my alley..heehee... [Wink]

It would be nice if the owner of the print actually described the color of the print. "No VS" doesn't say anything about the actual print, (and I don't think that the screenshot supplied is from the print. If so, then the prints color is already becoming a little muted, as that is not the original color of the feature when released.

Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 05, 2013, 02:56 PM:

I agree on the image Osi,it looks too clean,not a feint line,dust,
sparkle in fact nothing to show it's proper film.He doesn't ship
to the UK, small mercies indeed, because I would think he would
be grateful of any offers that come in,so far in this case, bugger
all, and serve him right. I still try to get my head around this idea
"does not ship internationally" routine, why, when the buyer pays the postage, what is the problem?

Posted by Michael O'Regan (Member # 938) on January 05, 2013, 03:03 PM:

That's a stock digital image there, I'd bet.

He says the print is LPP so I guess the colour must be OK. As I've said before, screenshots would do both seller and prospective buyer a big favour.

Posted by Dino Everette (Member # 1378) on January 05, 2013, 03:10 PM:

I don't think that any proper 35mm collector is going to pay that price for a print sight unseen from an unknown seller, so either this guy is known in that community or he ain't gonna sell that print. Not too mention that the Spanish language limits the buyers as well.

Apparently nothing. And not sure why people have to announce that they've pm-ed someone.

I suppose it's just a case of they know that person is active on
a topic and to get their attention in case they don't check their emails it doesn't bother me, it's what it's all about, communicating.
