I recently purchased a Sankyo dualux 1000. When I run small super 8 reels on the projector, the film is picked up by the second reel. However, when I run larger regular 8 reels, the film is not picked up by the second reel.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me.

Welcome to the forum. What do you mean by "picked up" by the second reel? Are you referring to the take-up reel not turning or the film not automatically feeding onto the take-up reel? If the reel doen't turn then this could be a belt issue....If it's the later and you are using the original Super 8 take-up reel then R8mm films being narrower often do not automatically attach to the reel.

The take up reel is turning fine. On Super reels it picks up the film fine, but on a larger regular 8 reel, the film is not taken up. Do I need to buy a take up reel for regular 8 film?

It would have to be a auto-feed take-up reel...but there's no guarantee it will catch on every film. Sometimes the curl ofthe film prevents the auto-feed. I usually just get use to stopping the projector and loading the take-up reel manually. Also you can try adding some 8mm leader to the head of the film to see if it catches any better. Hey Doug,

I have, I think the same problem you have *regardless* of what film type I'm using on my Sankyo Dualux 1000. Never seems to automatically catch on the take up reel. Right now I'm resigned to stopping the projector, and "hand feeding" it.

Don't have the same problem on my Sankyo Dualux 2000H though [Frown]

A lot of the time this is an issue of the material the leader is made from and if the machine is involved at all it's the angle of the film exiting the transport path and how far it has to travel unsupported to reach the reel.

My polyester commercial prints seem to reach for the underside of the takeup but bend down under their own weight just as they are about to get there. When the end hits the table I stop the machine, wrap it around the takeup and start up again.

My own movies with acetate leaders are much (umm) "curlier" and curve up towards the takeup and get caught by it.

As a matter of fact some of these are so curly they miss the takeup completely and head up over the top of the machine! This is usually leader that's been stored on the 50 foot reel I buy it on too long before I use it.

Much the same: I wonder if Doug's smaller/larger reel problem is a matter of the tighter or looser curl set into the leader by being on the outside of a bigger or smaller circle.

Steve may have a point.

The films I've currently used /inherited (to date) don't have a "leader" ...and, generally don't have any consistent type of "cut" at the front of the film.
