Hi guys! I have been out of the forum for a while but hope people won't hesitate to interact with me [Smile] . I just got done with school and finally have some time to play.

My questions: What is the best Standard 8mm silent projector for a 6 to 8 feet image (measured diagonally)? Is this image size too much to ask from R8 projection? What do you think of the Bolex 18-5 or G816 for a large image?

I am asking this because my Keystone K-100 doesn't give as large an image as my Elmo without losing quality.

Hi Akshay,

I've had excellent results with the Bolex M8 on such screens. It uses an old-style "chimney" bulb (between 500-750W) and it has a razor-sharp lens on it. No complaints about either brightness or sharpness with that one.
If you are indeed looking to buy a machine, definitely check out the M8; it's built like a tank and has great horizontal picture stability to boot. It is noisy (the blower cooling the lamp) but it runs like a champ.

Claus.

Welcome back, Akshay, good to hear from you again! [Smile]

The Bolex 18-5 will do the job good, but then you'll need a VERY dark room. I use it in my living room with some lighting around it, and it projects a nice 2-3' image. In a darkened room it did 6' without hassle.

Claus, I am considering the M8 as well. Thing is the 18-5 beats the M8 in a beauty contest.

Do the M8 and 18-5 come with zoom lenses?

Akshay, don't worry about beauty contests, worry about what shows up on the screen [Big Grin]
The M8 is a lovely Art-Deco-inspired design, and it has a prime lens on it, not a zoom. You'll want a good 20 feet to get a decent-sized image as you are discussing.

Of course Claus. I was only kidding about the looks. Is the 18-3 good? It plays both formats and seems to have a zoom lens.

Hi Akshay,

Glad you're back, I've found a superb regular 8mm projector in the Kodak Analyst 8. They have a 1.0 lens and are very quiet, adjustable speed and project a big bright picture, brighter if you convert the lamp to halogen. It's limited to 400' but, the bonus is that there are no belts to change. It's lightweight and are a little more scarce, probably due to the price of the unit at the time of it's initial sale.

I also have an M-8, it's true they are also reliable, beautiful, and very easy to use. It has a 1.3 lens but, can also be fitted with a 1.2 lens (from the Sears Tower/B&H's) which produces a bigger and brighter image. I've recently replaced a belt and have it running like before with some work but overall, not too difficult. This projector also has a sort of perfume smell that I don't get from other machines, which I really like.

Some Dual Eumig's take 600' reels and have a zoom lens, plus having sound on the machine may be something to think about in case you find prints that have a mag stripe. These are much more common and ready to ship through ebay.

Gerald, first time I've heard of a projector being liked for its smell! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
Although, I do remember back at the age of 14 when I was running my little Pathe Ace off UK mains. It came with a resistance box to drop the voltage from 230 volts down to 6 volts for the lamp. The smell of hot ceramic and paint was sublime, and somehow added to the enjoyment of the little hand cranked movie ! [Smile]

My mother insisted that I placed the resistance on a cork mat!
