Why do some have small holes in the center while others have large holes which requires an adapter? Just wondering

Smaller holes -> These are Standard 8mm reels
Larger holes -> Are Super 8 reels, adapters enable use with 8mm projectors

That's right.....standard/regular 8mm films are usually on the reels with the small holes (99% of the time),then super 8mm came along and I presume they used larger holes to seperate the two 8mm guages/format? The centre adapters allow the different sizes to be compatable with any 8mm projector.

Some dual gauge projectors need a Super 8 spool for their take-up.
