Hello - I borrowed an Elmo ST-600 M from a friend, but the spindles on both reels arms are larger than "normal" reels. The take-up reel is suited for the larger spindle, but I'm confused by size. Is there a trick to using a small reel on these?

The ST-600 is a super 8mm projector only.
Sounds like you may have standard 8mm reels. You will need a standard 8 projector or a Dual 8 which will play both formats.

I've just looked at two Elmo boxes holding Super 8 sound projectors, it sure doesn't help the novice when both boxes say the contents are 8mm sound projectors.
