Can I use Mineral oil to Lubricate Film ? Hey Gerald What about it drying up or being left on the film ? And what or why use the Pec Pads or Alcohal Swabs. If there is excess oil, that doesn't absorb, will it harm or hurt projector or film? Can I just use soft cleaning cloths? http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=006228

Laksmi, if you are at the point of wanting to try a home made remedy for lubricating films, rather than using a commercial film product, I still stand by my decade old recommendation of using Armorall Protectant wipes. I have consistently found that these wipes will clean and lubricate films quite well, without damaging the film or the projector. The wipes put a thin coating of silicone on the film. Many films that I have aquired have been very dry and shrunk and will shudder through the projector, but a couple of applications of the wipes during re-winding really seems to make them run smoothly.

Mark, yes ArmorAll products are available in the UK in the automotive section of most supermarkets.
Laksmi, available at WalMart and Target and Publix in the auto sections. About $5.99 for 25 wipes.
ArmorAll sells a number of different wipes , some for glass, some for leather etc so make sure it says :

ArmorAll original Protectant wipes

http://www.armorall.com/products/original-protectant-wipes/?select=wipes

It is in a yellow plastic container.
The wipes should be very damp, but NOT dripping with solution when you pull them out of the container If the wipes are too wet just squeeze some of the solution back into the container. If the wipes are too dry shake the container to move some of the solution back into the wipes. The wipes are lint free.
I use one wipe to apply one or 2 back and fore application to a few 400ft or 600ft reels while fast rewinding on the projector. I do not wipe it off after application, but I do run it through the projector immediately after application. Usually a couple of applications will lubricate the film and greatly reduce film shudder through the projector.
You will find that the sound improves noticeably after a couple of applications, and the silicone lubrication will greatly reduce sound head wear.
I do a reapplication about once a year on my favourite prints. Keeps them nice and supple.
ArmorAll states that their product 'provides protection against fading". Too bad I did'nt start using it on my Eastman prints 40 years ago! [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I do'nt think that the link that Maurice provided is the same product that I use. For one thing the Armorall Protectant wipes here in the USA are advertised for protecting and enhancing the finish of plastics etc, not for cleaning. The ArmorAll protectant wipes produce a very shiny surface on car dashboards etc, and they also produce a slippery finish. Not sure the Orange wipe is the same thing.

Paul
Did you see my second link to UK product?

Isn't ArmorAll silicone? On the 16mm forum, silicone has been discussed on many threads and the consensus there is that it should not be used on film.

Of course Barry, everyone has their own opinions on the subject of film cleaning and lubrication. I am just relaying, for what its worth, my own experience with ArmorAll, which does in fact have some silicone content. Individual experience may vary. [Smile]

Maurice, that second link is probably it, although it is called a different product name.

Paul, I would say that a decade of experience with the product would be a pretty good endorsement. Most references I have seen have been to the use of the silicone cloths that are used on firearms, and not ArmorAll.
