I have just become the proud owner of a Eumig S940 super 8 projector through Ebay. A very impressive machine in good working order, but there is a problem which I need some advice on.

The focusing knob doesn't move the f1.2 Eumig lens in and out as it should. For those of you that have this particular machine, should there be a small protruding lug on the lens barrel, which, when the lens is in place, engages in a sort of spiral groove, to move the lens in and out?

If so, the lug on my lens has been sheared off. The only way to focus is by pushing the lens in or pulling it out - not very accurate.

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem? (eg create a new lug somehow).

I have seen such a lens repaired by the insertion of a new pin, but it's a very delicate operation. A new hole has to be drilled where the old pin was and a new pin glued in position. The problem is that there is very little space for the depth of the new hole.

Much better to advertise in the wants section of this Forum to see if anyone has a lens for sale.

The pins on this and similar lenses get broken because users do not know how to correctly remove the lens for cleaning, etc.

Hi, I'm sorry for your mishap. I think it would be easier to find another lens: they usually don't go for higher than £ 50-60 and are quite easy to come by. Have you tried this by the way? www.super8film.at: he (Stephan Binder) specializes in Eumig machines and accessories, at the moment there is 1.3 Optical level system, less fast and less sharp than the original Suprogon which came as standard on the 940, but certainly more versatile.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll have a go at getting it fixed. John White in London can insert new pins for a very reasonable price, so I've sent it to him.

Hi Phil,
I had exactly the same problem a few years ago with the S940; shortly after purchase the pip fell off. I tried glueing it back with superglue but it kept coming off however the superglue itself built up after 3 or 4 applications and this then engaged with the spiral bit. I've never had a problem since.
