I have recently acquired a Sankyo Sound-501 Super 8 projector. I noticed when projecting a Laurel & Hardy film that the highly-familiar voices were at too high a pitch. On testing the machine with a timed loop, it appears that the projector is running fast - I suspect at 25fps. Is there any way to adjust the 'sound' speed of this machine? Reference to internet databases confirms that the 501 speeds should be 18 and 24fps. I am capable of dismantling the machine and altering presets on the PCBs if necessary. Any help would be much appreciated.

Mike
There are two potentiometers (pots) inside each controlling the sound and silent speeds. These can be adjusted using a suitably insulated tool.
Click below for some details on the 600 which I suspect is the same.

Maurice...you beat me to it. I was just getting ready to post the same reference thread
Be careful to use a non-metal tool...a wooden letter opener works well...or I just bought a ceramic tip screwdrive.

Hi, Janice
I badly described the tool as insulated, I knew what I meant, non-metal, but the words didn't come out!
Thanks for the reminder.

Many thanks for your answers. I couldn't find any indication that my question had been received in to the forum, so I went exploring. I found the site mentioned but when I opened the 501, nothing looked the same. However, taking the picture as a clue I looked for two pots close to a capacitor and hit the right one first time! It seems my machine was quite a way out, but I managed to get it spot on by making up a 10sec loop with holes punched every 24 frames and projecting it on to a digital stopwatch. I requires very tiny adjustments of the pot to get it absolutely right. I am attaching two pictures showing the speed-adjustment pots. The right-hand pot is the sound speed adjuster (I have marked the PCB 'M' and 'S' for mute and sound). I hope this is of use to someone out there and thanks again for those who took the time to reply. Regards, Mike.

So the right pot is for 24 fps and the left one for 18, right?
Posted by Mike Nicholls (Member # 3576) on August 07, 2014, 01:26 PM:
That's right, Maurizio, the right-hand one (marked 'S') in the picture alters the sound speed (24fps or 25, or whatever you want!). Although I didn't try it, I assume the left-hand pot (marked 'M' for 'mute') alters the silent speed. This would be very useful info for anyone using this projector for telecine.
Regards,
Mike.

The "mute" and "sound" labels was confusing to me to Maurizio. I have Super 8 home movie sound films with sound that run a 18fps. So the term "mute" doesn't really apply.
