Came home from the weekend and this new release from The Reel Image was waiting for me. What a treat! It's an absolutely gorgeous print that I highly recommend you pick up before they run out of stock. It's perfect for Halloween. My only complaint is the plain white box... sooo... was wondering if anyone can supply a scan of the old black and white silent super 8 release. I thought there was a scan on the forum somewhere but I can't find it. Please repost if you have it. I want to cover up my boring white box!

I used a copy of what I guess is the KEN cover for my print, which is also the first one Vidar provided a link to, even though the cover art scene, like many other KEN releases, has absolutely nothing to do with this cartoon's content. Also, the monster looks completely different [Big Grin]

The print cost about $60 which at first sounded like a lot but after a screening I thought it was worth every penny. Found the cover art for the old Ken release on Ebay. Funny they have Magoo and the monster meeting at a clothes line - since there's nothing like that in the film. Again, it's a beautiful print!

The second cover is the general one Republic (not Ken)used for their Magoo cartoons in their brief sojourn in the 8 mm area.I have several releases of theirs,(all one reel std 8 b&w silent) but not any catalogue,so I don't know all of them.It is interesting that they did not release any of their (few) cartoons but used UPA tv episodes instead (Mr Magoo,Dick Tracy) and Lotte Reiniger's Dr Dolittle.The other (rather ugly) one is perhaps from some european distributor.
Does anyone have a Republic catalogue?

Republic Pictures' 8mm output was taken over by Ken Films (along with United Artists 8mm) and some titles were given new covers . At the start, Ken merely put stickers on the original boxes.

I purchased a copy myself. Very good quality print. I'm not a big Magoo fan but I thought it would be good to have for doing a Halloween show for younger audiences.

Based on Brian's glowing review, I ordered a print from Steve Osbourne yesterday. I have no Magoo's in my collection, so it will be nice to have a great print of at least one.

Excellent! This is one of the best things about this forum - the way that active collectors help to promote new releases by reporting on what's appearing, and thereby generating more sales. I rarely if ever see that happen on other forums, so it's a good reason to take pride in the 8mm Forum!

The pristine prints are pleasantly printed on polyester.

Got my print yesterday, and I can confirm that the print and sound quality is excellent. Very sharp with deep saturated colors, although my print did have what appeared to be some very fine negative (white) line scratches.
Pat's statement that this is a made for TV cartoon is probably true, as the animation is typical Saturday morning TV quality.

All the prints of MAGOO MEETS FRANKENSTEIN have those fine negative scratches.
I don't know if you're a subscriber, but Steve did describe them beforehand in THE REEL IMAGE....

"Magoo Meets Frankenstein" and "Magoo Meets McBoing Boing" actually were released theatrically in 35mm, in a short-lived venture by UPA. I remember Republic's 8mm division; they also had Larry Harmon's "Bozo the Clown" in addition to UPA's Magoo and Tracy; and they had 400-foot 8mm digests on the market long before it was fashionable (all derived from feature versions of their cliffhangers.) I can't remember ever seeing their Dr. Dolittle cartoons in stores, were they in fact derived from the Lotte Reiniger feature (seems awfully old even then) or from the DePatie-Freleng Dr. Dolittle TV cartoon series of the late 60's?

I had a 400',standard 8 silent reel from the Captain Marvel serial.From what I remember the editing was quite good.Other than the full serial being available,I know that Ken Films released two reels from the Captain Marvel serial as well.
