I recently received a couple of B & W,silent digests (one from Castle, the other Ken Films.) Upon running the films, each had orange spots running throughout the entire reel. The Castle reel was the worst offender. What causes this to happen? It's the first time I've ever encountered it.Thanks everyone (as always) for you helpful advice.
Cheers,
Douglas

The only thing I can think of (if they are on real B&W silver stock) is insufficient fixing and washing in the lab. I have had some home processed 35mm still B&W negatives and prints look as if they have similar spots after a few years.

Douglas,

Brian is correct. Here are two threads we've had about splotches & spots:
Orange 1
Orange 2

Brian & Doug,
Thank you for the replies. The Castle reel has the orange spots so badly that they're almost fascinating to watch. That aside I'm glad to know the cause of them.

Hi all,
I too have this in patches on just one of my standard/regular 8 films so far (and on a 16mm B/W chimp film)...I tried Filmguard at the time but it didn't fix it as the film wasn't dirty - as I now know from the links in this post from Douglas Meltzer [Smile]
It sort of added a bit of charm to the film giving it that "old time" feel....I might feel different if it was on all my films !
I am still learning about this great hobby...and loving it [Big Grin]
