For the first time ever, we'll be screening a feature the night before the CineSea Film Collectors gathering. This screening will take place on Friday, April 24th (time to be determined) at the Ocean Holiday Resort in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. Admission is free.
Let's pick the film! If you're coming to the convention and have a print you'd like to show please list the title (up to two per collector) and format here by 4/17. I'll then create an online survey and attendees can pick which title they prefer by 4/22.
I'll offer two up from my collection: The rare scope Super 8 feature print of Close Encounters of the Third Kind or The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (Super 8mm, flat)
Who's next?
Doug
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 09, 2015, 01:48 PM:
Toy Story (The Original)
Super-8, Stereo
Posted by Louis Franchetti (Member # 2035) on April 09, 2015, 06:26 PM:
How about 'Finding Nemo' or 'plan 9 from outer space' in 16mm
Posted by Paul Adsett (Member # 25) on April 09, 2015, 06:28 PM:
Very democratic Doug!
Posted by Guy Taylor, Jr. (Member # 786) on April 11, 2015, 03:44 PM:
How about a double feature?
Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on April 11, 2015, 05:18 PM:
Sinbad (or Golden Voyage of), Argonauts or nice comedy - Shorty
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 12, 2015, 06:08 AM:
I'm going to bring my only Super 8 film, the Derann print of Gone With the Wind- Reel 1. I want to check it out, and if you are interested in showing it (as part of the viewings either night, it's available. Not sure how many people that attend have the Derann release, and some may want to see how it looks.
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 13, 2015, 10:26 AM:
I'd love to see your reel of "Gone With-", Jack.
There's a pretty decent chance our Friday Night Feature will be the best show in Wildwood that night: the rest of the town looks to be very off-season!
Posted by Gary Crawford (Member # 67) on April 14, 2015, 07:15 AM:
As a dad who just got his daughter into her teen years, I do hope we don't show Toy Story or one of those type films....which I was forced to watch millions of times at home with my young daughter. ha ha...but if that's the majority...then ..cool.
Am curious about Close Encounters..haven't seen it as a feature since the opening day of it many years ago.
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 14, 2015, 08:34 AM:
Even as the owner of that print I get where you are coming from, Gary!
I got all the way up to the year 2004 without seeing "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" even once!
-then I got a kid (I think you know him?) and a minivan with a video system and heard the soundtrack almost continuously for roughly 15,000 Miles!
(-even Dick van Dyke started to become...irritating!)
Seriously: Toy Story is a great print, and I really enjoy it (-you would hope so!), but I'd be more inclined to "Close Encounters" myself in this case.
I'm bringing my (improved) audio system down: I'd like to see how that film and my sound get along!
Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on April 14, 2015, 10:57 AM:
Don't like ENCOUNTERS (my own stupid opinion), most anything else to everyone's pleasure (except TOY STORY) - I have several films I'd enjoy watching - If it was up to me, it'd be shorts 24/7 - GWTW, by all means, SINDBAD, a natural (anything HarryHausen), Western, Comedy, Trailers, Serials, why...I might actually watch a Castle Travelogue (cheek-in-tongue) - BTW and FYI, this is Shorty typing again
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 14, 2015, 11:03 AM:
With Jack's blessing GWTW would be nice.
(Unknown print at present, of course)
EDIT: GWTW is 4 hours long!
Would we be seeing this feature with changeovers or are we having mini-intermissions between reels?

How about keep em flying with abbott&costello? Or my lpp 16mm scope return of the jedi? Either way im happy! I will provide a great new sound system for my 16mm and Doug can patch into it too. i' m bringing my Bell&howell arc lamp projectors for bright picture too!

Welcome to the 8mm Forum, Gary!
-too many good choices....
I have a really crappy print of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" (-watched it once)
-can I throw this one out there so we have one to eliminate?
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 15, 2015, 05:28 AM:
I can bring the whole print with me if you want of GWTW, and we can unwrap the [packages of their cellophane together. It's never been out of the box. I will gladly bring it if you all want to invest the time. Personally, I think we should show several different titles, and GWTW is going to eat up a lot of time. Again, I will bring the whole film if you want me to.
Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on April 15, 2015, 11:32 AM:
Slowly...as we unravel the ancient papers of long-ago,,,careful with the lid of that box...oh...how lovely to hear the sound of riffling paper and unravelled reels as they emerge from the depths of whence we all begin (waking up)...Sure, reel 1 of GWTW is fine, man what a dream...I'll always be hungry again!
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 15, 2015, 12:15 PM:
I'd like to say "Frankly I don't give a damn!"
-but actually I do!
Jack, is this on 400 foot reels or 600? Generally 20 minutes is the maximum for Saturday night.
Whenever it shows, I'd like to be there.
Posted by Gary Sloan (Member # 4482) on April 15, 2015, 01:56 PM:
Steve
If that is the Roy Rogers title, by all means bring it! Its a fun show!! i would love to run a little variety from all genres, but i am bringing some fun serial chapters, trailers, cartoons, comedies, musicals, sci fi, and maybe a feature, but we' ll see how it go's?
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 15, 2015, 03:39 PM:
Its on 400 foot reels. I'll bring the whole feature, and we can decide what you want to see. Shorty, the only package unwrapped is the first reel. I opened that one to at least look at the color! Still no projector!
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 15, 2015, 03:54 PM:
400 feet is eligible for either night.
-great coming out for what could be an awesome print!
Yes it is Roy Rogers, but trust me: Roy's Fried Chicken at the Garden State Parkway Rest Stops is much more appetizing than this 'un!
-as I remember it, the frame line is kind of...mobile. You're laying on the couch enjoying the show, and all of a sudden Roy's hat is poking up through the bottom of the screen!
(Where's the "vertical hold"?!!)
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 15, 2015, 06:11 PM:
Gary- I can hardly wait to hear the new system. Bet its going to be GREAT!
Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on April 16, 2015, 03:19 PM:
and Happy Birthday again, Jack - That's okay, we'll re-wrap Reel1, and I'll unwrap it again...am I nuts or nuts am I...and don't answer that until...we three-dozen meet again
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 17, 2015, 05:03 AM:
Thanks again for the well wishes!
Posted by Gary Crawford (Member # 67) on April 17, 2015, 07:19 AM:
Birthday greetings....also. Not sure I'd be up for almost three hours of Gone with the Wind....and , of course, we don't know for sure if your print, Jack, is good...and if the sound is good on it. But would love to see one reel...or part of one reel. Not the film, just the reel..... just kidding.
I believe you said you had eye-balled it and it hadn't gone "scarlett". That's something. See you in one week...sending private email shortly.
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 17, 2015, 08:05 AM:
Jack,
You are 351 days older than me!
As part of my Birthday present, my wife said I should buy any film I want at CineSea! (This could be dangerous!)
I think the opening reel of Gone With the Wind would be great for Saturday Night.
This weekend I'm going to round up all the stuff to bring. Based on prior photographic experiences and the end results on this forum, I'm getting a haircut too!
One week from today!
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 17, 2015, 07:14 PM:
I just checked the print of Gone With the Wind. It is definitely on 600 foot reels instead of 400 foot reels. Does this take it out of the running for either night?
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 17, 2015, 07:22 PM:
I think 400 feet is a rule of thumb.
Let's get our thumbs to Wildwood and figure it out when we get there!
Posted by Douglas Meltzer (Member # 28) on April 17, 2015, 09:18 PM:
At 238 minutes, I think GWTW is too long to run in its entirety.
I'm sure we can squeeze a reel of it in on either Friday or Saturday night.
I've emailed the survey link to those I know who are coming. If you haven't received the link please send me an email. Thanks!
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 18, 2015, 06:51 AM:
Doug-
I also think the entire film is a bit much to run. Plus so many have seen it already. I think the main interest would be from a collector's perspective. How does this Derann print look? Is it something other Super 8 collectors would want to add to their own collections? And to see a reel of it run through Gary's new sound system and your excellent Xenon projector will be a great experience. One reel will be enough to see what the print is like. I want to talk to you more about collecting and finding prints of some titles that are hard to come by in 16mm. Looking forward to being with you next week.
I did vote on the survey. So my vote is cast. They are all great titles, and everyone will be a great way to spend Friday night together. What time are we planning to gather Friday? I may have to take the last ferry over, which doesn't leave Lewes until roughly 6:30 I think.
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 18, 2015, 07:39 AM:
I'm not sure if it's lawful to campaign here, but please vote for anything else than "Yellow Rose of Texas!"
-better prints have been lifted at crime scenes!
(It's OK...it's my film!)
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 18, 2015, 08:32 AM:
I just booked the ferry- 6:00 departure. There was no way I could make the ferry for 4:30 departure. They want you there an hour before, and I don't get out of school until 3. This way I won't be rushed... but I definitely want to see the feature. I should be there a bit before 8 I think.
Jack
Posted by Douglas Meltzer (Member # 28) on April 18, 2015, 09:26 AM:
In that case, 8 PM would be an ideal time to start!

I'll eat some pancakes!!
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 18, 2015, 04:24 PM:
Coffee!
-definitely Coffee!
This would be the Uncle Bill's in Cape May: the one in Wildwood is still closed for the season.
-S'okay: I've been there. It's nice!
Posted by Louis Franchetti (Member # 2035) on April 18, 2015, 05:25 PM:
I enjoy going to the Crusader on Saturdays because we can walk right over there. Just a suggestion, but on Sunday we can go to Samuels Pancake House. You would have to drive there, but Samuel's and Uncle Bills are the two most popular and in my opinion the best places to go in Wildwood for breakfast. Also they open that weekend as well.
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on April 18, 2015, 06:12 PM:
I enjoy breakfast at the Crusader too: the walk up the beach as much as the breakfast itself.
I think they won't be open next weekend based on what I saw on the hotel website, but I'll call up on Monday just to be sure.
Posted by Guy Taylor, Jr. (Member # 786) on April 18, 2015, 07:04 PM:
Since I can't be there, I am going to screen my super 8 copy of "Yellow Rose of Texas" on Friday night; the exact same night as the feature y'all are watching. Steve, it has been a few years but I don't remember my copy being unusually soft. I wonder if there was more than one distributer.
Thumbs up to Uncle Bill's Pancakes. Tell Sandy at the counter I said hey. I envy you fellows and I hope to see you next April.
Cheers Amigos!

Jack, I will be at the show in Columbus. I have already made my reservation at the hotel downtown. Look forward to this. This will be my first time.

We have a three way tie for the Friday Night Feature.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Super 8mm, color, scope)
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (Super 8mm, color, flat)
Abbott & Costello in Keep 'Em Flying (16mmm, b&w, flat)
A new online survey with these three titles starts tonight.

Sinbad...(Vote for me, I'm fun)

Gary,
The film will be announced tomorrow morning!

CineSea's first ever Friday Night Feature will be......
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
Keep 'Em Flying was a very close second.
At 88 minutes, it looks like we'll have time to run that first reel of GWTW!

Great choice! I have already packed GWTW, and it will be taking the 6:00 ferry tomorrow to a great weekend of film!
See you guys tomorrow night!
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 24, 2015, 04:49 AM:
Little mix-up on my part friends. I have scheduled my ferry ticket in reverse... I'm scrambling to try and get it corrected, but I need to wait till I get to school this morning to see if anyone could watch my students for the last 20 minutes of class. Otherwise, my ferry won't be leaving until 6:15... It will be a tight 8:00 arrival for me. Might be a few minutes later. If I can get someone to cover class, I can take a 4:15 ferry. In limbo until I get to school. Car is packed, and so am I!

I hope you make it, Jack ! It's Friday night, now in Belgium. I know the time is different in North America but I have a special though for our American members who are at Cinesea.
Posted by Jack Cleveland (Member # 4485) on April 24, 2015, 03:24 PM:
Thanks Dominique- I am actually sitting on the ferry now ready for take off! We will be leaving in a few- I'm on the 4:15, which means I will get to Wildwood sooner than expected. All's well that ends well!

Well,
It's pushing 11:30 here on a cold Wildwood, New Jersey night.
We want you all to know that The 7th Voyage of Sinbad came off just fine!
-and we are glad to be here at CineSea once again!

A new annual tradition has begun.

Hopefully a bi annual tradition. Next Cinesea is oct. 17th ..that weekend.
Posted by Gary Crawford (Member # 67) on May 01, 2015, 06:58 AM:
Maybe Doug will further extend the "tradition" by showing the next in the series of Sinbad films...or at least one of them each year. I bet he has a few of them stashed somewhere in his vast vaults. We did see some great quality super 8 this time. I was REALLY impressed by the reel of Gone With the Wind...perfect focus, registration, sound...color ....could have been 16mm ...for all anyone would know.
