I'd like to see if I can fix this projector but I don't want to open up this before I know what I'm doing. The projector works in reverse but not forward. It seems to be out of gear or needs oil and doesn't move forward although I can turn it with the manual drive dial somewhat. I'd like to get in to the works but not sure how.The motor seems ok. I wondered if anyone has ever worked with one of these? In the detail you see the kind of nuts that are holding the metal casing on, although I'm not sure what tool will work. Any ideas? The other way to get in is on top with the 2 phillips screws but not sure if it will expose the gear mechanism. Is there a maintenance manual for this or does anyone have experience wrestling with this relic? Thanks in advance.

Hi Richard...I don't have that model Sears projector, but one that is similar, but silent. They were made of Bell & Howell. I have used a 3/16 nut driver to remove the screws. You can also use some needle-nose pliers, but it will take longer and there are a lot of screws.

You definitely will have to open up the case to get a better idea of what is going on. It may need a new belt.

Wrestling With A Wrelic Pt2-I used a 3/16" nut driver and it got a few of the nuts loose, however some are not as easily removed as I would've hoped. In fact I can't grab hold or loosen either with the nut driver or the pinch nose pliers. Any other tool that may work to loosen these stubborn li'l nuts? Thanks for any help in opening this tank of a projector greatly appreciated. If not I'll have to sell my Standard 8mm sound films.

You could try a small screwdriver and tap it in the edge of the stubborn screws or maybe try a metric socket or tap on the screw to help loosen it make sure your socket is tapered the screws are set in a slight tapered hole, there are 4 screws 2 on each side that do not need to be removed ou can see these on Janice's unit they are just past the halfway point by the lens they are usually close to the other screws. The two screws on back are probably for the speaker there are 2 flat head screws on the bottom towards the back that hold the cover on as well as the small ones.

Richard, is this a Standard 8mm Sound Projector or a Super8? The title on your photo says Super 8.

Also...try looking for a precision nut driver. These have a smaller outer diameter than a regular nut driver and fit better into the recessed grove on these projectors. I bought a whole set off Ebay a while back (don't see this item listed anymore).Here's a link to a single driver that might work and there are sets available. I've found these come in handy working on projectors.

Hi Janice. Thanks for the correction on my pic above. I didn't see that and have made the correction. I was able just to get one more screw loose with the one nut driver you recommended and I tried Jim's last ditch effort and that didn't loosen the stubborn nuts. The nut wrench set you recommended are kind of pricey at around 32 clams so I may have to try this one which comes in at half the price:

Hi Richard...I don't think those Sears hex drivers will work. You need PRECISION drivers and I don't see that identified on the Sears set. Precision drivers have a smaller outer dimension that will fit better into the recessed area around the screw heads. I didn't pay $32 for my set...I paid about $15 with shipping. The brand I got doesn't seem to be available...but look at these on Ebay.

It may be difficult to see, but the driver on the left is a precision hex driver and the one on the right a standard.
