The Friday Night Feature at the previous CineSea was so enjoyable that once again we'll be screening a film the night before the CineSea Film Collectors gathering. This screening will take place on Friday, October 9th (time to be determined) at the Ocean Holiday Resort in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. Admission is free.

Let's pick the film! If you're coming to the convention and have a print you'd like to show please list the title (up to two per collector) and format here by 9/30. We'll then have an online survey and attendees can pick which title they prefer by 10/6.

My two offerings are the Super 8mm color/scope print of Master & Commander (2003) and The Thing from Another World (1951), Super 8mm, B&W/flat.

The battle begins!

CineSea 12 details may be found here.

Doug

Where'd you get THE THING? - My vote is A&C MEET F or (again, if I can get someone to help with 2 empty reels), WHEN COMEDY WAS KING - Shorty - As a close alternate (teaser), a 1200' of TREASURE OF THE SIERA MADRE

All are Super 8 Sound

We need somebody to offer at least one 16mm feature just to make things interesting!

I know where the tastes of the Wildwood Assembly run, and my own features really aren't there (Toy Story really got trounced the last time!), so I'm going to lobby instead.

Master and Commander is something I would love to see.

-beyond that: Some Western, something John Ford/John Wayne-ish with a lot of scenery and adventure.

I have a beautiful IB Tech 16mm print of "Calamity Jane"- a musical western!

John Wayne would be fun... I love "The Searchers"!

How about a war film? I have a nice print of The Enemy Below. Or how about a slice of cheese called The Crater Lake Monster? We could call it Friday Night at The Cheesies. [Razz]

So far the best compromise would be a war, cowboy, monster movie...

Did they every strike 16mm prints of Cowboys and Aliens? [Wink]

No one want to see a Youngson Documentary? Just need help getting 2 parts of it onto reels - Still holding with WHEN COMEDY WAS KING and A&C MEET F - Heck, I'm Shorty, not Featurey - However, I also offer as alternate, a 1200' of TREASURE OF SIERRA MADRE, also a host of others for prime-time showing as well

Hi Shorty,

What reel sizes do you need, how many, when and where?

As a remembrance of the now late Christopher Lee I could offer a mint low fade 16mm print of Horror of Dracula....
You'll soon have so many suggestions that it will be impossible to choose. Or we could show ten minutes of each film mentioned. Just kidding.

I would go with 2-400', better 600' though - When: October 9th, Where: Wildwood Why: Because I might sell unless it is voted on to screen (I doubt it) - How: the only way is to rewind the reels, then simply attach the tail-end to a fresh reel and reverse it - After all that work, I'd like to see if it was worth the effort -

How about we try this, Steve, Shorty wants to see a Sunset Carson, I have a mint original 16mm Nostalgia Merchant print of Sheriff Of Cimmaron, from 1944, its gorgeous, and also very short only 54 min, we could do that first then Doug can show the main feature, i also have some nice shorts, trailers and a serial chapter we did not get to see of the Crimson Ghost, just in time for Halloween. Guys, let me know what you think? Steve has a valid point, we never watch westerns, and a classic one is too too long, so lets try a nice old B Western!! [Smile]

Hi Gary,

We were watching a "new" Castle travelogue (no later than 1950...) called "New England Holiday" last night. They passed through Marblehead and I said "Gary Sloan!".

(I don't always make sense to the rest of my household...I'm pretty sure they've adjusted to it by now too!)

As long as Doug can pound it into some kind of E-poll, I'm up for it! Maybe this multi-film program can count as a choice among the others.

Shorty: I'll commit to 2x400 foot reels at the minimum.

Steve,

I have that very Castle short, its a great one, ok,lets see what Doug and Lou think of the Sunset Carson, hope we can watch it.

Since this will be my first outing, I don't want to step on any toes as the 'new guy' bringing himself/his stuff.

That said, I have some suggestions I can bring if anyone is interested. All titles are in 16mm:

First the ones with 'themes towards Halloween' (monsters and whatnot), if you will:

-Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (only re-suggesting this here since mine is in 16mm).

-Invasion of the Body Snatchers (I have both the B/W and a very sharp LPP of the 1978 color version).

-Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder).

As for War Themed: "War Games" (1983), "The Day The Earth Stood Still" (1951).

-As for Westerns: I have "Tennessee's Partner" with Ronald Reagan (I believe it's in Tech) and on the flipside (both in terms of color and defining a 'western') a faded print of "Texas Across the River" with Dean Martin & Joey Bishop as an Indian.

-Toy Story (for those with kids...although reading above it looks like this was 'trounced' if I read that right?).

So that's a few ideas from me...I have others but trying to keep the list somewhat short [Wink] If anyone wants me to list more, just say so!! Looking forward to making this event for the first time, finally!! [Smile]

(BTW, I know I asked this before, but families are welcome, correct?)

Hi David,

It's always great to have somebody new show up!

You've given us a lot of possibilities here too!

CineSea is people friendly. If the people come in the form of a family, that's fine. I can testify here: my wife and son might even come if I don't!

The Sunset Carson sounds fine to me. And I'm delighted to be able to finally meet collector David Lucidi. I'm open to watching anything, I was able to take Friday off, so I'll be over by noon Friday. Anyone there early? We can have lunch!

Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on September 29, 2015, 07:53 AM:

David, ALL are welcome - INVASION (1956) is a nice one, I have to run some of my MEET F for a collector, that is why I'm offering it up as a showing for the night - It will be nice seeing you - Have any 8mm, bring it along, always of a mind for items - Best, Shorty

Posted by David C. Lucidi (Member # 4020) on September 29, 2015, 09:06 AM:

Looking forward to meeting you too Jack! Along with Steve, Joe, and everyone else [Big Grin]

Joe, no problem on the Meet Frankenstein, I only threw it out because Steve had suggested 16mm titles. I'm happy to bring anything requested!

Couple of other questions: If showing films, do we need to pay for a spot? Should I bring my own stands/screens? Do multiple projectors play at once, i.e., someone just brings a title they feel like showing and others can watch if interested?

I am curious to see how good 8mm looks when projected. I have nothing in 8mm, but I do have a brand new Elmo ST1200HD projector (literally, everything is still sealed) purchased in 1978 and (for some reason) never used. Belts are melted so it needs an overhaul but it is brand new (the accessories are still wrapped in the original clear packaging!). Maybe if I am impressed with 8mm I may start collecting that as well [Wink]

Looking forward to meeting everyone! What time does everyone tend to arrive Friday night? I'm 100 miles away and the wife works till 5 but I can head down to be there around 7:00ish, unless she takes off a few hours early.

(And sorry for all the questions!)

David,

You will have a blast next weekend, Shorty and I will be heading up together, so if we do not hit traffic which we will, we are hoping to be there by 5 pm, i will have a cool setup for all you folks, with my arc lamp projectors and big jbl speakers for great sound and picture. If you arrive at 7 i think you will be ok.

Gary

I usually bring a projector for the room (-White refrigerators! How did they know we'd project on them?!)

The Saturday show is two machines: one Super-8, one 16mm and they take turns. Friday Feature? It depends, I guess.

You don't absolutely have to bring any projector at all, it is nice to have one though.

Bring your appetite: we enjoy our meals together. If your fitness conscience bothers you, you can jog on the boardwalk!

The rooms are equipped with a nice small kitchen, it's nice to cook a little lunch.

Here's a practical thing: the meeting area is not exactly...Waldorf Astoria and the temperatures can be...at the limits of comfort.

-I council sweatshirts! (some have gone as far as jackets and wool hats)...maybe shorts if it runs the other way! (-and it has.)

You will love this fun time!!!!!!

Hey Gary Crawford-

Check your private messages!!

To all:
We have a great time at Cinesea, and am looking forward to our time together again. The Friday night show is fun, and the Saturday night one went well into the early morning hours back in May. I'm bringing a few features I hate to part with, but need cash badly. I'm also debating bringing a Bell & Howell 2585 with low hours on it to sell. It may need a little work. The worm gear was replaced, but it is still a tad finicky. I need the room though, so it may be bought at a bargain. Anyone interested?

David,

The CineSea 6 Video should give you an idea what the setup looks like. Thanks for all those feature suggestions, however could you please pick two out of all those titles? I will then send out a link for the online survey. If anyone who hasn't posted yet has a title they would like to submit please do so today!

Doug

Ugh twisting my arm Doug!! [Wink]

Ok, I'll throw Beetlejuice in first because it's family friendly (save for an F word which I can bleep out if needed), plus it's got the whole "monsters" theme as well as being a comedy. Plus, it's only 92 minutes, so it's not overly long.

Second would be a toss up between the 1956 and 1978 Body Snatchers. Both are great, but I think the '78 does a better job of building suspense. However, Joe Caruso leaned to the '56 version and he's a regular attendee, so I have to respect that [Wink]

And if we're looking at time, the '56 runs 80 minutes whereas the '78 runs 115 minutes.

I'll leave it to you (Doug or anyone else) which of the Body Snatchers to put in the poll (unless you don't mind 3 choices total). It's a matter of what may be a better 'fit' for the Cinesea crowd. [Smile] But definitely throw Beetlejuice in the ring regardless.

Gary's bringing that Sunset Carson, under an hour, why not have a western interlude?

If you want a film that does not take up too much time, how about The Brain Eaters(1958)? It comes in at about an hour and is entertainingly cheesy. Anyone can offer to bring a quality film to Cinesea. But me? I want to offer you a huge slice of 1950's cheese. lol [Big Grin]

We should probably pick the Friday film based on the film the least number of us has seen. Such as the director's cut of Zippy's Beach Adventure.

Shorty Caruso's Super 8mm print of Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein will be the Friday night feature!

The majority chose not to have a second short feature, however we could show Sheriff of Cimarron (runner up in that category) after A&C if folks would like to stick around.

Anybody have an extra screen they could bring along so I can have something to show my films for sale or share on? I'd rather not bring that big one I've brought the last few times... Any help is appreciated!

Posted by David C. Lucidi (Member # 4020) on October 07, 2015, 08:06 AM:

Jack, if I was coming, I would have brought several screens of which you could have picked one to borrow.

And yes, I said "if I was". Sadly, yesterday afternoon a friend of mine called, one I have known (and his family) for many years. His dad passed away. As it turns out, the viewing/funeral is on Saturday. So, once again, I am missing this wonderful event. [Mad] [Frown] Though the circumstances are understandable, it doesn't make this any easier -- it's frustrating, and at the same time, I'm emotionally hurt due to knowing his father so well over so many years. It just sucks all the way around.

I 'might' try to head down Saturday night but no promises at this point. Ironic thing is, about an hour before he called me, my wife sent me an email asking if I had made reservations with the hotel. I replied back 'we'll do it tonight' (meaning last night). Alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Here's hoping for a great turnout, great weather, and lots of fun for you all. And I'll (hopefully, come hell or high water) be there next year.

Actually, I better watch the whole 'high water'....given how much the other end of Wildwood (N. Wildwood) got flooded [Eek!]

Have fun everyone!! [Frown]

David,

That is sad news to hear, sorry about the loss, this happened to me 6 years ago with an aunt, and i missed cinesea on that weekend, but if you are able to come down Sat night, that would be great, as that is the highlight of the event in my opinion. There is always the one we will hold in April or May too.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I was talking to my friend yesterday and now HE feels bad I am missing the show (I had to kiddingly remind him the bigger tragedy WAS his dad passing away).

I already told the wife next year we ARE going (my exact words were "I don't care if the POPE wants to have dinner at our house when CineSea occurs again, you tell HIM to re-schedule!!"). [Wink] Trying to keep my sense of humor through all of this...Saturday will no doubt be an emotional day. Thanks again for all the kinds thoughts and words, and Jack (and others), we WILL meet soon enough!! [Smile]

I hope everyone has a great time this weekend. The best I can offer in my absence, is the last 'movie event' I went to.... well, hosted actually. For those that didn't see this on the other forum, something to (hopefully) get you all in the mood to show lots of great films this weekend at CineSea!!!
