Hi

I am new to this forum and I am avid film collector in South Africa. Well I am still new at this hobby. I used to own a video store for 23 years, which I closed down 3 years ago. I also import and distribute high-end audio visual products in South Africa, so I really love movies, especially old classics. I have latest JVC 4K 3D projector, 100" 2.40:1 acoustic transparent screen and awesome M&K active speaker system with processor, all THX-certified. And this system is really incredible, with stunning 3D images and wonderful Dolby Atmos surround sound, but at the end of the day, I just love watching classics on my film projector with mono sound. My friends just don't understand this passion I have for film.

A few years ago I started buying old 8mm and 16mm film projectors from local classifieds websites and I now have a nice selection of various 8mm and 16mm film projectors and films.

But I am finding it difficult to obtain film supplies in South Africa, even from overseas. Whenever I try to order films, reels or any film supplies, everybody wants payment through PayPal.

Our banks in South Africa are very strict now and they don't accept credit card transactions through PayPal anymore because its not secure and susceptible to credit card fraud. I buy a lot of blu-ray discs (especially old classics) from Amazon with my credit card with no problem.

I was so pleased to find that there is a seller for FilmGuard on Amazon, but when i tried to place an order, it stipulated no deliveries to South Africa.

Does anybody know who the manufacturers are for FilmGuard and FilmRenew? I would like to contact both of them.

I am thinking maybe I should import some through my business and maybe sell it locally in South Africa as well as use it for myself.

I recently bought some 8mm films from website Super8 Warehouse. The owner sent me an invoice which I used to arrange my bank to transfer money successfully. I don't understand why other film supply companies don't want payment through wire transfer. It is so safe. They only demand PayPal. I really hate PayPal.

I recently bought some old 16mm films that was stored in a garage for almost 30 years. The boxes are filthy and I really need to clean these films before running through my projector. Some of the films looked slightly warped.

So I am very much intersted in getting both these products FilmRenew and FilmGuard

I am also looking to buy some full length silent feature films on standard 8mm. If you have something to sell, please let me know.

Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Film Renew is a product of Urbanski Films in the US but they are no longer able to export it.
Film Guard is a product of Film-Tech in the US also but Paul Fosterin the Uk sells it. Check with him if he's able to ship to South Africa.

Igshaan, some banks of some countries take fees for accepting money transferts from some foreign sources, not to mention that there is a risk of abuse with exotic transactions.

It does not look like I am able to get FilmRenew or FilmGuard. I just discovered the website Van Eck and they have a nice online shop that accepts payment with regular credit card without the hassle of PayPal, and they ship worldwide.

They have a film cleaner called Solven conditioner 1 and conditioner 2. Has anybody used this before and how does it compare to FilmRenew and FilmGuard?

I have some 16mm films that are full of dust and some slighty warped and they all appear to be slighty dry. They not brittle yet, so I really would like to clean and lubricate these films before running through my projectors.

I suppose my only option is this Solven product, but I would like to know someone's opinion on this product.
