Depending on the amount of interest shown by collectors, CHC just might be releasing a great scope 2 trailer reel of two recent westerns from a certain cult favorite, film loving director.

The first trailer is a revenge based epic with 2 bounty hunters (one of them a former slave). The second is a claustrophobic effort along similar lines but here we have a woman in custody who finds herself in a desolate cabin with several characters whose motives are ambiguous.

No need to go mentioning names for now! What does need to be mentioned is that CHC needs a firm response via email or phone from collectors stating that they would buy this reel in order for this release to go ahead.

So please contact CHC in the next 10 days, showing firm and solid intent. Encourage your friends and fellow collectors to get involved, as CHC will need a decent number of commitments before it can go ahead. Remember, production costs are high and CHC would effectively be doing it for the love of the hobby, so hopefully 8mm collectors can support this effort and help keep the losses down and the hobby alive.

Send that email, make that call now!

?? CHC wants collectors to firmly commit (their money) to a trailer reel in which the film titles aren't disclosed beforehand?? Why?

Posted by Evan Samaras (Member # 5070) on May 14, 2016, 05:52 PM:

Email sent!

John, I feel Doug was clear in describing the two movies that could be available. If not, there is definitely a recent topic in the forum discussing the possibility

John, I think Doug's message is clear enough. I'm going to send an e-mail to CHC right now.

?? So if the descriptions of the films themselves are clear, then why are the film titles withheld? Seems very strange to me ....

No need to mention the titles, if anyone has read Marks efforts recently it'l be a bit obvious, i for one will be ringing Phil tomorrow and i do believe he should ask for a non refundable deposit from everyone, this way it will be a much firmer commitment. Being a trailer i think most of us should be able to stretch for that.
It will be great to have a piece of bang up to date movie on our gauge. [Wink]

Tom, I think CHC is closed on Mondays.

Emailing or Phoning your friends etc might help.

As mentioned CHC would be bearing a loss doing this, as with any super 8 releases these days, so the more we can support them the better.

The set up costs alone would make your eyes water, never mind the phycical costs of the film and recording, printing etc etc.

2 great films to buy on Blu Ray as well by the way.

With my health situation I am giving up film anyway though still getting a nice CL for my son who will do odd bits.

So even though its Blu Rays from Amazon etc from now on, I`ll still support chc on this if enough people commit and it happens. Hope so.

Best Mark.

my guess would be around 30-50£

Posted by Mark Todd (Member # 96) on May 15, 2016, 12:36 PM:

I`d guess about £35-£40 ish area, so thats about right Tom, having spoken to Phil.

I`d also guess CHC would be loosing about £10+ or so a pop if it does well even, so the more who get a copy the better, might just ease that loss down a little at least or make sure its not higher.

In terms of cost of living etc these days, and with all the effort that will go in, I think its really worth anyone having a copy.

If it works out well, maybe something similar can be done again.

Best Mark.

Hi Dominique, basically the more the better, I think 20 - 30 would be a good number at first at least.

The more mails or calls with a commitment CHC get etc.

The amount of thier own money that has to go in to releases these days I think its amazing they keep trying.

A decent amount of possitive support and contact for them can only be a good thing for the hobby overall as well as the hope for this to happen.

Best Mark.

I would love to sign up for this, but I don't think its fair on Phil to be loosing out on this trailer print. Can it not be established what the break even point would need to be, and then ask if people are interested. Phil does not seem so unreasonable that he can't be asked the question surely?.

Posted by Mark Todd (Member # 96) on May 15, 2016, 01:28 PM:

All they want is a good show of support and commitment and it will happen Paul.

So if your in just let them know and possibly round up another odd collector or two as well if you can.

Thing is now to just get the support in.

Best Mark.

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on May 15, 2016, 01:31 PM:

Thank you, Mark.
Paul, if the members of this forum can help to start the release, the title will be added in the catalogue and more collectors will potentielly buy it.

What are the actual numbers needed Mark or Adrian, to make this definitely go ahead?

Posted by Mark Todd (Member # 96) on May 15, 2016, 01:50 PM:

High, all CHC need to move ahead is a decent show of commitment to the release, via email and phone and they will take it ahead.

No Money but a firm possitive commitment of interest and intent when available is all that is needed for now. But it is needed.

The more the better. Just get the commitments, and support in.

Best Mark.

I will be phoning Phil when I'm off in a few days Mark, no problem there. I don't mind paying upfront, but it would be nice to know the exact numbers required here given that I've seen around 20 committed members here, and elsewhere saying they will most definitely subscribe to this excellent project here.

I just hope the numbers required are a realistic one, even if it does mean paying upfront, that's all Mark. [Smile]

For instance, if it took around 50 upfront, there may still be a way to go here??

Posted by Mark Todd (Member # 96) on May 15, 2016, 02:08 PM:

A Commitment of support and intent when available to CHC is all that is needed for now.

Lets get moving on that, and fingers crossed.

Best Mark.

Defiantly agree with Paul, whilst there is a lot of enthusiasm on here and the other forum,(it also need to be put onto the other two forums),Phil is in business to make a profit in order to live.
I cant see anyone releasing new titles of any kind simply as a favour to the hobby.
I'll also ring Phil and see if he can give an idea,(we cant hold him to it to be exact), of approx how many "definates" would be required to make it worthwhile for him. At the end of the day i dont think there there has been an abundance of support for his Back to the future reel he wants to release. Last time i spoke to him i think he was actually surprised at the lack of response.
Have to say if it could only be one trailer for me it would have to be the Hateful8 in scope. I could easily give the other one a miss but both on one reel would be a pretty dam good release.
oop, did i make a title suggestion? [Big Grin] [Wink]

As for supporting this and Tom's comment about The Back to the Future reel, I find I just can't get a straight answer about new releases from CHC which puts me off placing an order, if you get a definite price and a definite yes to the release then offer it to customers it should take off, guesstimates are no good to anyone, Mark

The new projector idea from CHC foundered due to lack of interest shown, we mustn't let a release like this fail the same way.

I haven't collected Super 8 for years, to focus on the larger gauges, but I think it's great that CHC are doing this, and it's a little piece of film history given the film in question, so I'll give Phil a ring tomorrow and place my order. Fortunately I still have my Eumig 824!

Posted by Tom Spielman (Member # 5352) on May 16, 2016, 09:01 AM:

Whether it's a trailer or a new projector, this seems like the kind of chicken and egg problem that kickstarter was created to solve. The owner of the project sets a target funding amount and deadline. Contributors make a financial commitment, but spend no money unless the funding goal is actually met.

The project owner doesn't need to worry about people not following through on their commitments. They don't have to worry about refunds if the funding goal isn't achieved.

The funders don't have to worry about spending money on a product that may never exist and everyone can see the progress towards the funding goal.

That's a great post from Chris - a collector inspired to make his first 8mm purchase for many years is a great endorsement of this initiative!

I think it's appropriate to draw a distinction between this idea and the CHC projector. While the latter was a noble initiative and I'm sorry it didn't succeed, it's well-documented in at least two other threads that there were significant factors which many potential buyers found offputting at the time. I won't mention details here - let's focus on the (very positive) matter in hand!

I do agree with Mark its no good of CHC saying" if their is demand" if they were to give a definite price and definite date then collectors will place orders but not until they know its going to come out, you have to speculate to accumulate

Posted by Mark Todd (Member # 96) on May 17, 2016, 03:58 AM:

What we need is for people to give a firm commitment for the release, its just 2 trailers 2.30 mins each.

It should be relatively affordable.

If you feel you have to change your mind further long the line for whatever reason fair enough.

The costs of the negative alone for this are as I said eye watering. If CHC were to break even, even, they would be doing very very well.

I`m going to get at least one copy and I don`t even do super 8 now. I might even send the cash and say sell the copy to someone else.

The daft crazy money things are going for now in the hobby, its a great, cheap way to support it for what would be a great release.

I would just say if your in to super 8 go for it please, and pass on the word.

Best Mark.

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on May 17, 2016, 05:53 AM:

Peter - while a date and price would be helpful, it can't be easy nowadays to source 35mm prints of trailers to use as master material, so there would be work to do and perhaps significant expenditure even before a negative can be made. There's unfortunately a history in the 8mm world of 'demand' being expressed for releases that doesn't end up translating into sales, so it's understandable that in an era when the cost of releasing anything is frighteningly high, Phil is requesting that collectors tell him direct that they want this release. If you would like to have a copy and would be willing to pay about £40 if needed, why not order one, otherwise wait and see what the outcome is. Anyone would also be at liberty to say "I'll order one so long as the price is not more than £______".

You've said that collectors won't place an order until they know a release is definite, but numerous forum members above have confirmed that they HAVE placed orders! The increasing popularity of 'crowdfunding' initiatives mean that we are now getting used to situations where we make something happen by confirming that we want to invest in it. Incidentally, I haven't placed my order yet but I'm checking with a few friends who might also want one.

I am IN!

I just sent Phil an E-mail.

There's a lot to be said for having some films like this.

In your average audience, somebody there is just waiting for you to put up red faded, scratched, speckled prints from the 1970s (-bonus if they are silent) so they can segue into "You know, I got VHS almost forty years ago...".

-you put something like a trailer from a brand new movie on screen in scope with great sound and it blows their minds a little!

"WHERE did you get THAT!"

We should be on at least 19 now, taking into account the orders stated SINCE yesterday's message stating 11. I'll soon make a list of all that have said they are in so that we can check that Phil has them all on his list, but it's obviously essential that all wanting a print also contact Phil direct, as he otherwise won't consider it a firm order.

I should mention that Steve Osbourne and myself are working on putting together a 200ft reel of 35MM commercials as well as "welcome to the cinema" spots. Here is the 60 second intro to the theater ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6gon66jF8s

and here is another of the ads that will be on this reel, a very funny anti-smoking ad called, "The magical Amount"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mfJS68Jmu4

(OK, if you're a smoker, it may not be too very)

as well as some other ones, "M&M" candy, Cheetoh's "Chester Cheetah"

We actually have both a scope and flat (letterboxed) version of the "Regal Cinema" opening, but most of the commercials that I have are flat 35MM, so we will probably go with the flat version, as everybody can buy that one, but not everybody has a scope lense.

Here is the one that had played in my local cinema for years, up to about a year ago. I am really hoping to see this on super 8 one day:

You can add my name as "order sent but not confirmed", I just sent an email to CHC with a firm commitment; I'll let you know when they respond.

I had hesitated on this since I focus mainly on 16mm now, but my thinking kept coming around to the fact that since I only got back into film in late 2013 (after a ~25 year break from junior high days) that meant that I had missed out on all the "new" stuff which came out in the 80's through early 2000's, so this is really my first, but hopefully not last, chance to get a newly minted print of anything .

And Osi, for what its worth, put me down for one of what you guys are working on as well.

URGENT though I had an email from Phil, it was after the 3 rd I`d sent him and there does seem to be an email issue.

He is only aware of under 30 so far and I made it 36 people 42 actual copies at the time.

So if you haven`t heard back from Phil do please email CHC again so all the firm numbers are in.

Thanks Mark.

PS I make it 37 people now and 43 copies. And I think looking at that alone this would do everso well if it can happen as would very obviously do well with many other people.

Fingers crossed.

I'd like very much to support this venture, but, I'd also rather like some degree of clarification.

1) I email who to say that I'd be interested in a new trailer reel?

2) I get what sort of confirmation? And in what time frame?

3) What is the realistic approximate cost?

4) Will the print be Acetate or Polyester - and given each alternative, what sort of magnetic stripe?

5) Content?

Best,

Rob.

I do understand that a degree of "code" may be needed as I've been around 8mm for a long time now, but any help would be appreciated...or a private message is fine.

I can answer some Rob, even if not all, lol [Wink]

1/ phone or e mail Phil @ CHC. Alternatively, I can add your name tomorrow when I phone him if you like?

2/ I'd imagine the only conformation any of us get at this stage of the game, is to join the list here as Adrian has very kindly compiled for us all

3/ It has been suggested approx £35

4/Unknown I would have thought at this stage but I can ask Phil tomorrow of the probable outcome. I expect he'd know, if it were to materialize.

5/ I can PM you the titles. Please check your mailbox here.

All done Mr Young.

I wasn't able to ask regarding stock type, expected date of arrival details etc as Phil wasn't there, but Denise has written down both of our requests on Phil's official list. [Smile]

Hopefully, once Adrian reads all this, he will update his list above to include you in it here also Rob. [Wink]

Thanks for the latest posts - list updated accordingly. One forum member who didn't manage to confirm an order has been taken off the list, but can be reinstated if he gets in touch. Simon McConway was initially included as one of my 4 copies but as he's a forum member, I've added him and reduced my number to 3. The current number of prints ordered is 45, so an excellent response that must be unprecedented in recent times! I'll send the list to Phil late this evening so anyone who still wants to opt in (having emailed/phoned him an order beforehand) is still welcome to do so.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that all the acetate stock has run out, so I'd expect this to be polyester if it proceeds. I expect single stripe is likely, although I'm not sure if the striping person has completely given up hope of adding a balance stripe.

From what I'm seeing Adrian, sadly, it would appear so regarding the balance stripe situation.

Personally, I'm glad it would be on Polyester, if it goes ahead.

If it also somehow managed to contain a balance stripe, it would be the icing on the cake for me, and would also rejuvenate my interest in possibly buying some new features from the German labs in this era.

Andrew - I seem to recall hearing about tests some time ago that gave some cause for optimism regarding a balance stripe, but it's probably the case that they have so far failed to achieve consistently good results. But hopefully they might manage it one day.

Just a quick note about the origins of this possible release.

Earlier in the year I was thinking about new releases and what would be a really good one that would catch the imagination of collectors and even the odd non collector.

I thought about it for a while and realised that these two trailers have a certain filmie conection and are also absolutely brilliant in thier own right and bound to be very interesting.

Around the same time Adrian has also had thoughts about the hateful 8 being a great idea himself.

We had both oddly had a feeling for a Tarantino release being great.

It all came together. I spoke to Phil in Mid march about the idea of a pre subscribed release, buidling numbers and support in advance and at the BFCC Adrian gauged intererst and spoke more with Phil about it all and things started to build.

Things kicked off from here to a point but I had became ill.

We opened this forum post through Doug in may after interest proved to be very high, and its grown and developed ever since with more support from more people.

And shows that with such a group and joined up effort just what can be done.

Best Mark.

Great job Mark, and indeed if only some of our remaining dealers would join in with the activity more here, surely they would have concluded what you have here, long ago.

It is the internet these days that brings about maximum exposure and attracts all interested parties to one central location with a transparency attachment to everyone all of its own. No magazine, telephone calls or even e mails nor even individual dealers web sites can possibly bring everyone together in the manner a forum of this magnitude can.
It's a central hub for almost everyone still interested in the hobby.

Way to go Mark! Fancy becoming a dealer? [Big Grin] [Wink]

Hi Mark, well that's really odd as I got an email from Phil at chc and he said you had nothing to do with organising it, as I remember your first post and you mentioned you had a conversation with Phil regarding a new release I found his reply a bit strange, I don't think I imagined it, another case of customer care.... NOT.

To be honest with you i think the trailer to hateful8,(if thats the one we are talking about) on the super 8 scope screen will be a great viewing, i was looking at the blu ray reviews and a lot of people are saying what a long drawn out boring film it is. Hopefully someone on here may put me right on that,(i was going to order it) BUT,
The trailers are superb, and would be a fantastic thing to have on the 8mm gauge in scope. Bang up to date and some pretty big actors names in there to, Bruce Dern, Michael Madson, Samuel Jackson, Kurt Russell and Tim Roth, and of course there is so little material if anything from Tarrantino.Fingers crossed for this one. [Wink] Oh, not to mention Morriconies latest as well. [Wink]

Personally, I would like to see a new 600' horror digest. Maybe like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or some other classic in the genre. Even though most of the old IFS and Derann prints of TCM have some degree of color fade, they always sell for big amounts when offered for sale...

Posted by Tom Photiou (Member # 130) on May 24, 2016, 04:09 PM:

Oddly enough Joe there is an Iver full 450ft digest on ebay now, looking at the state of it i am gob smacked thats its already up to £26, its not a particularly rare film but it does seem to sell well no matter what.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231952993930?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageNam e=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Apologies for going a bit off topic here, I think realisticly trailers may be the only new releases we may see due to costs and declining collectors, thats why the idea of The Hateful 8 as a long trailer in scope is so appealing. Hoping it does go ahead. I am also going to support The Back to the Future promo Phil is looking at releasing, i believe this one is at the labs.
What film stock is used these days? Are we going to be getting low fade? I hope so. I did very much want to get hold of both of the True lies extracts but i just cant justify to my wife that kind of spend for 30 minutes of film. I know its a great release though.

Been following this thread with interest. I'm of the opinion that as collectors, if we went down the crowd funding route we could probably get more new releases. Let's say we wanted a 600ft release of something, we'd almost definitely be able to work out the variables of pre-print work, lab costs, sound striping etc. If we know those costs, we can work out how many prints at what price to make it an attractive proposition and gauge the crowdfund accordingly. If we get oversubscribed even better, more prints at a slightly reduced cost for all.

Yes two I might suggest 600 footer wise would be Zulu and Chitty.

Two winners I am sure. Especially Zulu.

If we could get a 25/30 mins version of Zulu to say £99 it could work.

Maybe we should try it as a forum itself release.

Best Mark.

Many thanks to all who have supported the proposed new release featuring two 'scope trailers. It's excellent news that Phil has more than enough orders to want to proceed, and we therefore don't have to worry that any messages failing to reach him could be problematic. I've sent him the list. The historic nature of this initiative is reinforced by Phil saying: "Its nice at long last after 29 years in business to have been asked to release something!!!!!" Much credit is of course due to Mark, and thanks are also due to Vidar, who has provided enthusiastic support and significantly boosted our numbers by whipping up interest on Facebook.

Regarding the history that Mark has outlined, my one addition would be my post in March titled Recent trailers for 8mm release 'masters' which mentioned that certain trailers (including one that would be on this release) are still appearing on 35mm. Although we have reached viability in terms of orders, the remaining key element is to obtain the 35mm prints needed. Phil has approached his USA contacts, but if any forum member can assist by finding or asking around with a view to acquiring either or both trailers, please do so.

To answer a question from Tom, the release would be polyester low fade - I think finding fade-prone stock would be impossible now, even if you wanted it! I'm virtually certain it would be on Kodak stock as I examined my recently-printed polyester 'Super 8' trailer and that's Kodak.

This thread has been of such exceptional importance that I'd suggest that we make it the one place to home in on news regarding this particular project. If discussion on possible other releases, etc, happens elsewhere, we can keep the focus here on the matter in hand, which will help all who have placed orders to find the information they want, and thus avoid the tendency for the same questions to repeatedly come up.

I agree 100% that this initiative is a credit to the 8mm Forum, which has an impressive history of publicising and supporting new releases - which can't be taken for granted on every forum. It's a great example of talk being backed up by action!

Brilliant words of wisdom there Adrian and I'd also like to give personal praise and thanks to all those who made this a realistic proposition here.

That of course includes your good self Adrian, but equally not forgetting the input from Mark and of course Vidar in all of this.

Great Adrian, it really is a good little step forward, and bringing the support, and active interest of collectors on to this side of a release adds weight possitivity and viability to a project.

Your right too, probably best to keep on this track, but with luck if this can happen, we might see other future projects brought forward in this way.

Maybe odd ones will need pre funding as well, but it all helps.

With Kodaks new camera, and renewed interest in analogue generally as well, who can say if we might get a few more people in to the fold.

That needs Classic and Steve Osbourne to keep some new, and interesting product in the hobby as they do, and hopefully we can all support them in that.

Well done Adrian, Vidar, ( hope he`s getting better ) and all us filmie nuts on here.

I do think a forum backed, and even, forum done release would be a great idea as well for the future.

Best Mark.

Thanks Adrian, thats good to know about the film stock.
I know this probably sounds really stupid, BUT,
How good would it be to get Tarantino on board here, only because of his love for actual film. (one can dream).
In regard to a 600 foot reel, this has come up many times with many suggestions, but (& i would love that opening to Private Ryan) i would imagine the cost of a new 600ft release would probably be in the region of £150 upwards which does unfortunately make it difficult for many. The trailers are certainly affordable.
Perhaps the next stage to support phil or Steve Osborn or whoever manages to get this going should be a deposit of no return from all of us on the list to actually prove our commitment and also seal the deal????
If i ever win the lotto i will somehow pay for a feature release, i dont care if it only sold two copies, i would love to be able to release a film on 8. [Wink]

Now then, how about about a brand new projector. [Big Grin] [Big Grin] (only joking) [Wink]

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on May 25, 2016, 04:37 PM:

Tom, I believe that 150 £ for a 600 ft release would be an optimistic price, that would probably more expensive. You're right by saying that would be too much for many budgets but when you see the prices asked and paid for second hand prints, it is not sure that such a film would not find buyers.

Posted by Tom Photiou (Member # 130) on May 25, 2016, 04:44 PM:

That is very true. [Wink]

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on May 25, 2016, 04:53 PM:

Never forget,as I was tempted to work out today, that a 600ft average 28min Super 8 film contains some 40,320 individual transparencies.

If you look upon it that way, compared to old fashioned 35mm slide film, £150 perhaps doesn't seem so steep after all in 2016. Especially with a soundtrack! [Wink]

If a 50ft camera stock cartridge now retails for $45, maybe more proof that this really isn't too bad value all things taken into account.

I've just received the latest list from CHC. I'm surprised there is not a single line about the trailer release. CHC's website is not more informative : nothing at all about the project. I would expect from the main concerned person "more" (if that word can be used in this case) promotion.

Posted by Antoine Orsero (Member # 41) on June 01, 2016, 08:04 AM:

I do not buy at CHC because give its coordinated its Visa card and the site does not seem secure! I prefer to pay by Paypal but Phil does not accept!
It's a shame

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on June 01, 2016, 10:54 AM:

I too had a look at the list and wondered if it might say something. However I'm not extremely surprised that it doesn't because now that Phil S knows that the demand is there, the key thing is track down the master material, and he might be wary of raising hopes in advance of this. Much as I hope it happens, we can't underestimate the challenge in relation to getting hold of 35mm trailers, particularly in relation to the latest film. The number of prints made must be tiny compared to the pre-digital era, and I'd imagine they are highly sought after by 35mm collectors. I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility that we might need to ask the director if he might be willing to assist. He provided an enthusiast quote about the new Kodak camera, for the Kodak site!

I`ve not had a reply a few times from Phil now.

It is possible with no mention or the source difficulties or the fact it was a forum generated idea/project etc he is not so fussed on taking it forward. There are still options forum wise etc.

We all for sure might make an effort to support CHC on thier current releases a bit more, so it looks like doing further things might be worth the effort or cost for them.

How about we all check out what they do already and buy something new in the next few weeks in " summer " to show willing.

Best Mark.

PS I tried to contact Quentin on 19th March via a message through facebook, but its gone off now. It was`nt read. I explained what we were trying to do etc, also real film etc etc.

PPS Antoine, Its a shame you have to miss out, I`m sure one of us would do it for you with our UK card and you could paypal gift the balance if ever needed. They do have a paypal but don`t use it generally.

Odd I went back on my page in again and the Quentin message shows now !!!! again.

I just thought I would run this past you all as we may well struggle with especially the later trailer as although shown on real film in some places, promotion of it was quite likely 99% + Digital, Maybe totally.

The earlier trailer was around but is worth a lot all cut up and sold in actual frames if you will so could be very difficult as well.

If it isn`t possible to get material from the director, not so easy ? possibly. I still hope we can contact him and discuss it, etc etc.

As we all know what we are talking about, and after all they are only open source marketing tools, and there is no money in it, more the opposite costing to actually do, here are the two I think would make the best super 8 release.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUdM9vrCbow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AKBYP4meB4

What I am asking is are people happy if we need to get a negative made from Good HD Digital sources for the super 8 release.

( It can be done, no need to go further on that )

It does`nt worry me at all, and would mean we can choose the best trailers. ( I think these two are ).

Not sure if CHC would go down that route, if still interested, but it would very certainly make it much much easier to take further forward. Also while the interest is all still about.

Best Mark.

I have seen 16mm sourced from digital on a large screen and it was beautiful. (Not saying what, who, how or where...we all know why.)

I'm in favor of this even more than getting a couple more trailers we will be busting through a barrier in the way of future prints.

-what film sources there are now will not be in a few years.

Being too much the purist will get us nowhere here. Even if you find a modern film projection print, the odds it's stayed on film from the moment of conception are pretty tiny these days.

I agree. Even a large proportion of vinyl pressings are mastered from digital sources.

Well it could just have to be a case of needs must, but the results might also be rather nice.

No worse a thing than Bugs life or Toy Story on super 8.

It could mean if Phil is up for it, we can move things along while we are all built up on it.

It also might open things up as said for future things.

Best Mark.

If the trailer could not be sourced on film, I wouldn't mind having a trailer sourced from a digital source.

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on June 02, 2016, 08:59 PM:

The economical digital to 16mm method we know about doesn't apply to Super 8 so I think we need to know what the practicalities come down to.

Mark - are you referring to the German lab producing a 16mm negative from digital, that would then be used for Super 8 prints? I expect the results could be good in theory but some reassurance would be welcome. I could be wrong but I heard that an animated scope Super 8 release from roughly about two years ago was from a digital source, and I heard criticism of it being unusually soft.

Although a digital master might be better than no release, it would particularly be a shame with this release, as both films were of course shot on film and the latest one's 70mm release didn't even entail the use of a digital intermediate. So as a rare celebration of film surviving into the digital era, it could be unique, and that probably encouraged some to order.

All credit to Mark for approaching Mr T direct!

Hi I Spoke on the phone the other day initially, and asked then via email with links, for a price for a cropped from 2.35 anamorphic for a scope super 8 negative direct from Digital.

So 4/3 in the super 8 frame x 2 with no black bars, so very slightly cropped at the top and or bottom etc to get the full 2.66/1 format.

Its slightly more expensive than with film ( the prefered option ). Not heard back yet on costs etc.

Its just a viable option so good to see what people think.

I`ve not heard back from Mr T Himself yet but there are other routes. Hopefully he will/would think its great allround.

Tarantino is represented by the William Morris Agency I believe. He could be contacted there. I think he would give his blessing to the super 8 trailer project, waive any rights and that would make it an 'official' release...

Posted by James N. Savage 3 (Member # 83) on July 01, 2016, 07:58 PM:

I would consider purchasing one if it is sourced from film. In my opinion, once you mix digital into the super 8 film process, it compromises the analog feel of film.

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on July 12, 2016, 03:37 PM:

I'm please to report there has been some progress. Phil has advised: "Have a master already on the first film, but the newest is a challenge." So at least we can just focus on obtaining (or perhaps borrowing) the other one! If the next attempts are not productive, asking Mr T must be worth a try.
