Hey all-- I'm a new member here and joined specifically to ask about this question. I hope it hasn't been asked a bunch of times before, but if it has I hope you can still help me out.

I have a Eumig 709 and everything seems to be running fine- lamp, audio, speeds. But the issue is it's not producing a "moving image", as in you can't see the action happening in the film. What is projected is just the film moving in front of the lamp, so it looks like, well, a bunch of blurred frames.

I am assuming it has to do with something in the flicker? The light seems to be flickering but it seems like it's almost out of sync (not sure if that can actually happen...)

I apologize in advance if the answer to this is completely obvious...
Any insight will help!

It sounds like the pins are broken off your claw. These are what interfaces with the sprocket holes within the gate, and it's how the machine moves the film into place, stops it and holds it while the beam shines through it.

If you open up the gate, you should be able to see the claw push out, move down, pull in and than move up again when you twist the inching knob. It has to protrude beyond the plate to reach the film.

I don't know how much this is like to 800 series, but the knob has to be aligned exactly in the correct position when the gate plates are removed or the claw isn't retracted and the pins are in danger of being broken.

I've a 710 and a 712. At the rear of the projector there's a small knob with a red spot on it. This has to be uppermost when you change the gates to switch gauges. As Steve says, failure to do this can damage the claw.

The Eumig S709 is a dual gauge projector, and as such, it only has one claw. Unfortunately, many owners do not retract the claw when changing gates between showing of Super 8 and standard 8 films.

As mentioned above, the rear inching know has a red spot. This must be rotated to a vertical position (i.e. 12 o'clock) when changing gates as this position will retract the claw to allow the gate to be pulled out and replaced.

It would seem that the claw has been broken off due to an owner not observing the above condition.
