Want to introduce myself as a new member of the forum. Have lurked about for a short time before joining. I have only just become re-interested in 8mm film and viewing. As a young kid I did a little, however my meager resources at the time prevented much development. The only thing I remember well is myself and my younger brother loving to have the wits scared out of us from old monster movies.

Have recently come into posession of some films from my uncle who passed away. Mainly Castle Films Sci-Fi and Horror.

As an aging baby boomer there is much nostalgia for me in this. Looking forward to viewing.

Can anyone offer me some advice as to a good all purpose projecter for 8 and Super8? Something easy to operate etc to get me off the ground for starters. I have a screen. Any other supplies that might be needed as I intend on expanding the the number of movies.

Thanks in advance for all help and suggestions.

For a silent Projector I would recommend a Sankyo 2oooH Dualux.
It`s easy to operate plus it will show Standard & Super 8mm films,
There seem quit, a few about just now, good luck,

Welcome to the 8mm Forum!

I'd suggest you make an early leap to sound. This opens up whole new worlds in film collecting: it's kind of like going from a bike to a car!

(-and I love both bikes and cars!)

I'd suggest Eumig machines in the 800 series (802,807,810) and Elmo machines with the prefix "ST" (ST-180, 600, 800 and maybe even 1200 as an ambitious option)

-all will play silents as well.

If you are prone to travel, search this Forum for "CineSea". (Even if you aren't, enjoy reading about it anyway!)

Thank you Steve. Sound does appear to be a good idea. Just starting out so getting a "car" makes good sense. I had read or heard reference to CineSea and will check it out, or at least read about it for now.

What I neglected to tell you here is if you want to play both regular and Super-8 films you'd have to pick and choose the dual gauge machines out among these.

None of the Elmos are.
Some of the Eumigs are. (Model numbers formatted like "Eumig 8**D")

I had drawn a bead on a nice new in box Eumig but alas underestimated it's worth and was outbid at the last moment. Still on the hunt for my first projector.

You'll get one eventually: they are very common!

What you should be on the lookout for with these is there is kind of a variable speed transmission in there with a rubber surface. When these get old and worn they often lose traction and the machine can't reliably get up to speed (if it runs at all...).

Make sure the seller guarantees the film transport operates OK. Sometimes these machines can be revived...sometimes not.

If you get one of these "I can't test it because I don't have a tape." sellers, don't bet the house on it!

If you want to find some real life information about a particular projector, (problems etc.), before you buy it, search this forum by model number. For example if you are considering bidding on a Bell & Howell 33st, search for "33st", and read comments regarding it. If you don't get any hits, try adding the make of the projector i.e, Bell 33st". If you add the make right away, you will get tons of hits on models other than the 33st. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Welcome Jack - You did similar to what I did. Lurked around in the shadows for a while, reading other people's topics, then decided to take the plunge yourself! I wonder how many more people that applies to?

Just to support Steve's comments earlier, moving over to sound should be the next stage. Steve is a Eumig person, as you may have guessed, but I am a Sankyo person. Any of their sound projectors - 500 - 700 or 800 ranges would serve you well. The mother of all projectors is usually considered to be the Elmo GS1200.... but one step at a time!

I'm really kind of Ecumenical about this: the reason my Avatar has me standing is front of the ELMO building is their US Headquarters is about 10 miles away. (If it said "Eumig"...).

-whatever works...

I've actually been pretty lucky: I've never had a disastrous projector, so I'm of no mind to dispute what other people like using that I haven't even tried.

-But sound is at least the icing on the cake. It comes pretty close to being the flavor in the cake!
