I have a standard 8mm print of the Derann feature of Psycho.
It looks like an ex film hire library print judging by the amount
of tramline scratches that are across the frames.

So in short its well run and worn.

I have a question for anyone on this forum who owns a print as
regards the sound quality.

Does your copy sound okay with the dialogue but sound 'wowy' and
'draggy' with the music score ?

Hello David....I have not screened it yet as I am still behind with my screenings. I will see if I can check it out this weekend and let you know. I run my standard 8 sound prints on a Eumig 810D HQS or a Kodak Sound 8. What projector are you using?

I checked mine out on my Eumig 824 Sonomatic.
So we have similar mechs on our Eumigs.

I might try it out on my Standard 8mm only Eumig MK S but I think
the results will be the same sound wise.

I look forward to your findings especially with your Kodak machine.

David, whilst I admittedly have no experience of this print, back in the day of Derann standard 8mm, I believe the method used to copy soundtracks was actually using two projectors physically connected.

Anyone please correct me here if I'm wrong.

If so, I would expect a certain degree of wow to be introduced.

Possibly viewers watching feature films at home were more forgiving back then?

I do not own a print but I would guess that all of the elements on the soundtrack are possibly recorded poorly. Dialogue does not suffer from sounding poor to our ears, even though it may be a poor recording, but the music, and other effects would give the game away that the whole track suffers from wow and flutter, not just when the music starts, unfortunately.

of transferring sound via two projectors.

Martin yes you are right there as I am also a Hi-Fi enthusiast.

Hopefully Bill will get back to me with his findings or someone
else can enlighten me.

Well I ran reel one on both projectors....the film music was wobbly on the Kodak, the voices sounded fine and on pitch...the film music was steady on the Eumig as were the voices but the pitch was off, slightly sped up. There may have been slight wobble on the Eumig but way different than the Kodak. I was having some issues with the sound on the Kodak when I first got it and I made some adjustments so that may be why the warble is more noticeable on the Kodak. The music in this film is such a strong character in the movie it's easy to hear if it is off! I am still pleased with the print as my usual audience wouldn't notice any issues anyway as long as I use the Eumig. Maybe a little wobble is there on every print.

It sounds the same as my copy then. So I reckon they all must be like this pitch wise.

You will probably find the sound is variable on the remaining
reels of film.

As for as the picture quality goes it is very good indeed through out.

My copy however does have some dirt printed in it.

I thought it was a hair and fluff on the top and bottom
left hand side on one of the reels. I tried to blow it out
then realised it was a lab fault.

Its the reel with the shower sequence in it.

It will be interesting to see if someone else reports this problem.

I sold my std. 8mm Psycho feature years ago in the hope of finding it within my budget on super 8 or 16mm (search still ongoing) to the best of my recollections it was a nice contrast black and white print, wear lines here and there as I believe they were all originally hire prints rather than made for retail sale.

The buyer of my print is a current forum member and he then sold it onto another forum member via Ebay! I'll send him a PM to see if he can comment on here too.

Sound quality was OK but a bit muffled but then again my hearing is not great on top end frequencies so it could be my lugholes to blame!

I have had a response from outwith this forum but would welcome
some from here.

I am beginning to think my print may be a mix of the original early 35mm master struck release and the 16mm later version.

However its the sound issues that are of concern to me really.
