Hi All,

Finally got going on this, what with work and all. I have a start on it, so there may be some gaps in postings; we'll see.
You know the drill: I post to the picture limit, then someone posts a line or two, and I continue, so we keep everything in one thread.

---------------------------------------------------------

Cinesea 15: Springtime in Wildwood.

Show no. 15....who would have thought it would happen? John Black's dream lives on just fine.
As usual, I drove up from DC with Gary Crawford (who comes from Manassas, VA) and as usual we had a fun ride together, with trivia, a good lunch and general craziness to while away the miles. The forecast had looked great, and it didn't let us down.
The weather was fantastic, with temperatures eventually reaching the high 70es.

At the Ocean Holiday Motel, the room awaited, plain, unadorned, but soon to be filled with film, projectors, talk and laughter:
 -

To kick off things, Doug Meltzer had ordered a custom frame for the big screen we use Friday and Saturday night. The corners and braces give an idea of the quality of the setup:
 -

We had the luxury of trimming the pipes to exactly the right height for the room, to maximize the picture size, using a pipe cutter:
 -

...and the final result was well worth it: a large, tight surface for high-quality projecting:
 -

An early bird on Thursday was Shorty Caruso who put together quite a display of vintage boxes and literature:
 -

The same Mr. Caruso got us going Friday morning to come to beautiful Cape May (not far down the road) to have breakfast at Uncle Bill's Pancake House. That's Mike Lattavo, Jason Smith, Jack Cleveland and Shorty:
 -

You can forget about diets (kept or attempted) when you come to Wildwood [Big Grin] Uncle Bill's is one example. My only excuse is: "I don't normally eat this much for breakfast":
 -

..more to come...

We missed the Thursday Preliminaries!

-maybe someday!

I'm glad Shorty got to eat at Uncle Bill's. The one in Cape May is quite nice.

That looks yummy [Razz]

Cinesea certainly looks like a collectors dream day out. Just like our conventions here full of like minded collectors. Paradise. [Wink]

Meet Shelley, the lady who holds it all together at the Ocean Holiday Motel. She knows all of the regulars by now, and she's been known to put a room on standby for someone even if she hasn't heard from them about coming to the show....that's the kind of relationship we have at our "home away from home" :-)
 -

Another thing we do to improve picture quality is to hang black cloth over the diffused windows. This knocks down ambient light considerably, even on sunny days:
 -

People arrived from Thursday through Saturday. Here, Jason (coming from Japan) greets David Baker (from No. Carolina):
 -

Time to get the gear up! Joe Vannicola showed up with his trusty Bell and Howell:
 -

...Gary Crawford had his workhorse Pageant (among others):
 -

...Doug brought his GS-1200 Xenon:
 -

...aaand Steve Klare, Jr. brought his Yelco projector and carved out a space for himself to enjoy his 200-footers:
 -

Things were getting well underway. More next time.

Steven showed his first sound film on my Elmo ST-800 "Travel Projector" that day.

That's one small step for man...

(He just helped with the lighting at his school Musical: he seems ready.)

Nice pics thanks Steve!

You're young man is there now Steve. A young mature adult judging by the photos. Be proud when it is soon he who is operating the Xenon at Cinesea.( Not too far off by the looks of things).

Well done Mr Klare jnr! 😊😊

Our youngest son has just this past week graduated in Motion Design (Stop Motion)
My wife and I are brimming with pride! 😊

The next Nick Park with any luck.😂😂

Do eggs range, or just the chickens that lay them??? [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on May 07, 2017, 04:57 AM:

I think it's just the chickens and the way they are kept.
Free range and battery isn't it?
Organic also.

Posted by Douglas Meltzer (Member # 28) on May 07, 2017, 05:25 AM:

Nevertheless, the chickens crossed the road to the Ocean Holiday Motor Inn to join the gathering of Film Collectors. There, the film loving fowl were given free range to roam freely and peck out, er.... check out the prints and equipment that were on display.

That gets us back on topic!

Doug

...thank you, Doug, and now back to the free-range collectors [Big Grin] .

I ain't the same until two things happen. One, the official banner is hung:
 -

...and the "Airyflex" is inflated and placed (no, it's not 4 feet tall; that's just the perspective..):
 -

Thanks must be given to Doug, Shorty and these two gents, Lou Franchetti and Lou, Jr, for all their work on our behalf in getting this event together twice a year. Much appreciated, without them, it wouldn't happen:
 -

Friday rolled on; selling and buying was well underway:
 -

Evan Samaras and his brother checked out the goods at the Franchettis' table:
 -

As always, every genre and every kind of edition, from silent shorts to full-length features, were represented:
 -

Meanwhile, these two beasts, brought by Geoffrey, were waiting to go into action for the first big event of the show: the Friday Night Feature:
 -

Next chapter coming soon....

Lou and Lou always have a box of Blackhawk Laurel and Hardies. This is often my first stop after I get there.

It's entirely possible the Franchettis are the origin of the majority of my L&H library now, including the jewel in the crown: an "Unaccustomed as We Are" with sound. I looked for one of these on E-bay for years, then one day I'm standing there at the Ocean Holiday thumbing through the Blackhawks and there it was!

As Steve says, you never know what "The Two Lous" will have available. One show I walked away with "Freaks" in 16mm, thanks to them.

The Friday Feature has joined our regular big event, the Saturday Dinner, as something to look forward to. As you may have seen, on the forum we have a poll to select the film to be shown, and this time it was "Beetlejuice" in 16mm that won.
Dinner is kept easy on Fridays; we had a choice of pizzas and Italian subs and salads for carry-out, so we could get going with the films at a reasonable hour.

A collaborative effort, this time with Gary Sloan bringing the PA system and Geoffrey bringing the Xenon 550W machines, we strive for a 'pro' screening.
The sound goes through a mixer to two self-powered JBL speakers:
 -

The chairs get set:
 -

Technical issues get worked out. Gary Sloan's machine in the middle runs the previews and shorts:
 -

Geoffrey threads the feature. We worked with changeover on the machines:
 -

We started with a selection of shorts and trailers, a very nice reel of "2001" included:
 -

...and "Beetlejuice" is up and running:
 -

 -

Friday night ended with an atypical but appropriate foggy night (real-live film noir...) and we all slept very well after a long day of film fun:
 -

Next up: Saturday.

Excellent photos.
How did you run changeovers? Manually or did you have a changeover sync?
I've always wanted to.

Posted by Douglas Meltzer (Member # 28) on May 08, 2017, 01:23 PM:

Michael,

Gary & Geoff performed the changeovers manually and they did it perfectly. Since the audience knows a thing or two about projection there's always someone who shouts out "nice changeover!"

I do manual changeovers at the house.

-they'd be a lot better if I only had two right hands!

I do much better having a feature split onto two large reels and just declaring an intermission.

Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on May 08, 2017, 05:31 PM:

That is very much my prefered method also Steve. [Big Grin] [Wink]

I cannot imagine how hard it must be to synchronize one moving picture with another, then shut off the lamp from the expired films projector at just the precise moment while bringing in the next machine, without anyone noticing on a giant screen what has just taken place!

I guess I'd have to be an Octopus before I'd find it a doddle, either that or an ambidextrous Centipede!

No,.. two reels and an interval or all in one run I'm afraid for a mere amateur projectionist such as myself, is more than enough!

You have enough to concern yourself with keeping the gate clean, adjusting the focus occasionally and rectifying the sound.
After that we begin to enjoy what we witness on screen!

Hopefully now, all digi (press a few buttons here and there) fans that are present here, will begin to understand entirely why we call this a very different experience from a beamer and very much "A Labour Of Love" [Smile]

And to think, when the album was out by the very same name, a beamer was a casual expression for a BMW and Derann were doing the best they ever had! [Big Grin] [Wink]

It always makes me happy and sad at the same time to see all of these wonderful pics as, I'd LOVE to go to Cinesea but with our budget, (pretty much just scraping by except for the odd dollar coming in), we just can't afford to pack up a road trip all the way across the country ...

One of these days .... [Frown] [Smile]

Posted by Michael O'Regan (Member # 938) on May 09, 2017, 12:25 PM:

With 16mm, at least, and accurate leader countdowns, synchronising shouldn't be a problem. I'm guessing it would be the same with 8mm?

On Saturday, things rolled on. Gary Crawford and Gary Sloan usually find something to make a deal with:

 -

"Mr. TNT" Todd Tuckey arrived with his family again and made the rounds:
 -

Special mention goes to Jason who came to us again all the way from Japan. He brought several goodies this time. Japanese 400-footers anyone?:
 -

 -

 -

...and the deal of the show, courtesy of Jason as well:
a GS-1200 for $500! (It went to a good home..)

 -

David Baker was showcasing an interesting lamp modification on this Bell and Howell:
 -

The note explains this good affordable way to use a modern lamp:
 -

At the limit; there are some more to come...

Graham - At the bottom left of the Beatles cover in the photo, you can just make out the words "Magical Mystery Tour." As Winbert points out, it would probably have been printed onto Fuji film, so,most likely, would have far better colour than the muddy ones we get in the UK and Europe.I,too, would be curious about the contents of the Bay City Rollers film if Jason can enlighten us all, please?

Fabulous set of photo's,Claus, by the way. Please keep them coming!

Thank's Claus for sharing these photos and stories. I really enjoyed Cinesea.

The Bay City Rollers 200ft was released by Fujifilm in Japan. Apparently, they were very big in Japan in the late seventies. I believe its what you would call a kinescope, so the source material doesn't have the best picture but the optical sound is excellent.

The Bay City Rollers are performing live and the digest shows clips of them playing at least 6-7 of their songs. Here's a link to a video I shot when I projected the film.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2ae_-5lCReFTHJmNVBGNzBXX0k

The Beatle's 200fter is a digest of The Magical Mystery Tour movie. It still has a lot of colors but it had more purple fade than whats typical from a Fujifilm digest.

Usually the colors on these Fujifilm digests from the 1970s looks great but they can have some purple fade. Some prints hold up better than others.

Excellent, thanks for the pics, Jason!

CineSea is a great place to showcase your t-shirts. Meet the "Castle Brothers" (accompanied by Joe Griesbach):

 -

..speaking of Joe, he arrived with his new acquisition, a talking teddy bear. He claims he got it at a casino, as I recall (you'll have to ask him for the sordid details... [Big Grin] )
 -

Open wide! commercial Isco 'scope lenses are a great bargain for home use these days (I have one myself); all you have to do is come up with a mount. This is Gary Sloan's solution:
 -

 -

David Lucidi (on the right) had a great time with us and sent a very warm note on Facebook to the group expressing how much he enjoyed the event. Hope to see you again in the fall, David!
 -

Can't forget "Mr. Espresso" John Capazzo. He was back in force with good coffee and homemade cheesecake:
 -

...and in addition to his culinary skills, he is also a service tech for Elmo ST-1200s. Here is one "at the doctor's" during the show:
 -

That's it for this batch; I'll try to wrap it up with the next installment.

Finally Saturday night drew near, and with that, the dinner. The Boathouse, which we had enjoyed on previous occasions, had re-opened just in time to accommodate us again. Excellent meals were had, and much fun:
 -

 -

 -

 -

Todd Tuckey had arranged for a commemorative "anniversary" cake to celebrate 15 shows. John would have loved this:
 -

After dinner, back to the films! Lovely prints were screened, including this classic cartoon:
 -

...and our on-going serial "The Crimson Ghost", Tammy Tuckey's absolute favorite, of which we do a couple of chapters each show:
 -

With the end of the show on Sunday came another tradition: the group shot:
 -

As people packed up and started leaving, the mood was one we all knew: a sense of warmth and friendship and a feeling that once again, this little hotel by the Jersey shore had been home to something special: a celebration of film collecting and film in general in the midst of a digital world that knows little about such things anymore.

If any of what we have posted has piqued your interest, please start thinking about our fall CineSea, and if you can possibly attend. You will be welcomed and odds are very good you'll love it!

Thank you as always for looking and reading; I hope the images and words have helped convey the atmosphere of "The Biggest Little Show on the Shore" :-)
Claus.

Superb as always, Claus!

What's great about this is something like 5 years ago we inherited this idea from John Black and all we hoped for it at the time was to put up one last weekend in his honor.

These days, at basically every weekend we have one or two new people join, and when they head home we know they will be back.

This wonderful, whacky, simple little thing we have is good, and it looks like it's growing too.

 -

Friday afternoon we tested out the Super 8 projection setup with a well received showing of part one of the scope True Lies digest. Part two was shown the next day.

Saturday evening's screening started with Derann's Dolby Stereo Fanfare short blasting through the speakers. Then came:
The Living Picture Show
Long trailer for Shout At The Devil
Yellow Submarine trailer
Universal Orlando Cinema Snip
Three selections from Cinema Advert Reel #27: Kit Kat, King Kong Coke & the claymation Levi Double Stitched Jeans Ad
The beautiful looking extra long promo for Disney's Dinosaur

Charlie Chaplin's The Cure (courtesy Steve Klare)
An amazing sci-fi trailer reel that Jason Smith brought from Japan
The Little Rascals in Reunion in Rhythm (courtesy Shorty Caruso)
Ken Films' 200 footer Bucket of Blood

Scope reel:
Gorgeous trailer for The Black Hole
Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines trailer (faded but fun)
Oliver trailer
Derann's Grease extract featuring Summer Nights

And that doesn't include the 16mm titles!

It's too bad that David Guest does not have his own British clone of Claus to do an equivalent superb photo essay on the Northern Film Convention in Blackpool. Reportedly a truly wonderful event, it has sadly never been documented in anything close to the manner that Claus has routinely done for Cinesea.

We were all much too young then to ever take full advantage of those conventions.

Many that were enjoying them to the full back then are very very sadly, no longer with us.
They were at a different stage of life and at very different and more vibrant times surrounding this hobby than we are now left with.

We were bringing up our new families in our new homes with far greater priorities during those halcyon days of the 90's.
Films were the very least of our priorities no matter what the driving force for this hobby.

Don't beat yourself up my friend, all we can do is enjoy the very best of what is left from those days now in these twilight years for our hobby, and now, we find ourselves at a similar stage of life that those guys were back then, having an absolute ball and loving it to the full!

Posted by Paul Adsett (Member # 25) on May 15, 2017, 08:27 PM:

Well as far as I am concerned this hobby just gets better by the day. And I think part of that feeling is the knowledge that these films and projectors really have value, not necessarily in just a monetary sense, but from the fact that they truly are a great link to the reel cinema of the past. I find it extremely satisfying to be able to pull say a classic MGM musical off my film shelf and show it being projected in exactly the manner of over 100 years ago. Am I proud of my reel film collection and projection gear? You bet - there is no one else that I know of in my neck of the woods that has anything like it, so it is an immediate conversation piece for anyone visiting our home. And yes, I am at that point of life when I can indulge myself in all aspects of this amazing hobby.
