I recently bought a Dual 8 Eumig Mark S 807 D. I'm curious about the Suprogon 18-28 Eumig Zoom Lens if it will fit it. My Eumig is currently being worked on. This lens has circular ridges around the base of it, and the zoom lens for the Mark S 807 D doesn't.

I think the barrel size is 32.5 for the suprogon,so it should fit . you would have to focus it

The suprogon was made when eumig projectors didn't have the focusing knob on the side of the lamphouse,so it will fit,but would need focusing by turning its mount.
The suprogon had rave reviews when introduced.

Hi David,

I hope you are rite. That might explain the circular ridges on the base of the lens. I was lucky to buy both of these through Steve Osborne. The lens though was a after thought, after I already had the Mark S 807 D, and Steve didn't have the chance to see if it would fit, and work properly. Now I have to wait a few days till I get the Eumig back from being worked on.

One thing of useful information I found out from Steve about this Eumig model, from a friend of his that specializes on working on Eumig's, Is that thick green Mylar leader can be useful to help clean its path, and especially the sound head which is hard to get at. Before owning a Eumig, I always would remove this leader if on a film I bought, because I thought it was too heavy to go through the path, and might get torn up or stuck, and ruin the film itself. I wonder with some of this leader with a little applied filmrenew would work all the better. Just a thought.

my reply got a bit fragmented but still makes sense,i think.
the sound heads on the earlier eumigs were so easy to clean,they just un plugged,so you could clean or even change them dead easy.
the thick leader you mention was sold here as "protect a print".
I never used it so don't know if any good.

Protect-a-Print makes me a little uneasy: it's mildly abrasive and since wear is one of the issues we are up against, I'm not big on going that way voluntarily.

Access to the innards of an 800 series Eumig isn't super-easy, but it's not impossible either. There are little covers that pop off the guides. when you remove them you find tiny pairs of half-rollers. These tend to disappear if they escape, so it's better to lay the machine on it's side before you open these places up. (-put gravity in your favor.)

You can clean inside the sound head too:

-it looks harder than it really is.

These machines aren't the least bit sexy: no pairs of meters in the side and long panels of switches and LEDs. The fuselage is a lot like a box, but mine has never done me wrong ad I'm glad I have it.

Instead of taking every thing apart, how about using regular leader about 20 feet or so, and going over it with alcohol, or filmrenew, but I think the alcohol maybe better on the sound head in general, and running it through a couple of times. I would be then inclined to take out the removable gates, and go over them with filmrenew, which I generally do on my other projectors paths, except for the heads, which I do with alcohol.

It's just good to know for a fact there isn't something nasty like a shard of somebody else's film lurking somewhere. I ruined a really nice 600 footer once because of nothing more threatening than a tiny spec of leader tape.

Not to be too graphic, but think of all the medical procedures that are really nothing more than going in and talking a look. There come times when there is just no substitute.

Hi Brad, it has the same lens barrel diameter, however, the focus system is different. In the 800 series I have only ever seen two 810s that takes the spiral style lens barrel. It doesn't have an external zoom knob, you just turn the lens. Of course something could probably be made that would catch the threads.

I demag the head every time I clean it.

If it makes a difference, it must be a very subtle one, because I can't hear it.

I suppose in the long term, close exposure to magnetized surfaces can't be great for the recorded sound either, so I guess it's not a bad idea.

It's kind of like this: given the benefits of either demagnetizing your sound heads or flossing your teeth, definitely floss!

-much more bang for the buck!

I never tried the Suprogon 1.0 lens on another projector than the Mark 8 mm (for other Eumig models, I use the 1.2 lens). There is a noticeable improvement regarding the brightness with the Suprogon vs the original lens but the picture is smaller. Maybe it was designed for the super 8 model ?

I think it came out around the time of the mark DL,with its very good light output.
The suprogon focal length was on the long side,so not much use in a small room.
