Hi All,
I recently bought a Eumig Mark S 807 D, which I mentioned in a earlier thread. After reading about how abrasive Protect A Print can be, and taking apart the projector to clean the head, seemed a bit of a hassle for me, especially since I tend to have shaky hands when dealing with taking things apart. I came up with a idea, which even Larry Urbansky thought was a great idea.
I thought of using regular leader, and using about 20ft or so of it. Then I suggested to him of either applying filmrenew, or alcohol. I personally had thought alcohol would be the way to go, because I clean all my other reachable magnetic sound heads with a drop of alcohol. He thought the alcohol wouldn't be bad, but the filmrenew would be better.
He like so many others was completely against Protect A Clean for being so abrasive. Unlike film gates, which should be cleaned after each showing, is very easy on this, because as most of you already know they easily pop out. A tape head doesn't need to be cleaned as often, and I think running about 20ft or so of regular leader with film filmrenew on it every so often for cleaning the head seems safer, and less of a headache of having to take apart the projector every time you need to do something that should be so simple as cleaning your sound head.
I am looking forward to trying this when my Eumig comes back in a day or two from being worked on. It needed a new lamp socket. Will keep you posted on how it worked.

Sounds interesting - are you going spray the solution onto the leader and run it through?

The same procedure, if I were cleaning a film. I will put the leader on hand rewinds, and go over it with strips of cloth that have been dropped in a small bowl of filmrenew. In this case, it will only take one cloth. The leader I will use, will be unused, so it will be clean. Being that it will only be about 20ft, I will have put the leader on a 50ft Reel, and have it then take up on the other end on a small reel too. Before running a film then through it, will wait about 5 minutes or so, and that way the filmrenew will dry. If I were cleaning a whole reel of film though, I wouldn't then run it though a projector for at least a day or so to properly dry.
