Hi, I recently joined the site having just bought a secondhand Eumig. Please could someone help. The manual with the Eumig says a 50 watt bulb is supplied. I am disappointed with how dark the picture appears on the screen. I have many hundreds of feet of home film taken by my father who is now deceased that I would like to see again. Can I upgrade the lamp? Does standard 8mm film deteriorate, the film was taken in the 50’s through 70’s but I remember it being a lot brighter when we used to watch it.
What size projected image would I expect to get a watchable image.

If I remember correctly the P8 Dual is very similar in internal construction to the Mk501D and takes the non halogen 8v 50w "Spaceman" lamp. I was told a long while ago (by Tony Shapps at a widescreen event) that it wold be very difficult to upgrade the lamp. I think this was due to the diameter of the halogen reflector lamps and the need for a 12v transformer.

That said the light should bot be too bad (I have used one for a 4ft wide picture on a highly reflective screen) perhaps as it is not a halogen the lamp is suffering from age related blackening of the inside of the envelope. New lamps are not cheap now though, a second hand projector with a 100w halogen bulb can sometimes be bought at film events for less.

The lens has a 1.6 aperture. Combined with a 50 watts lamp, I'm not surprised the picture looks not bright if you were used to Watch the films through a projector with a "100 watts/1.3" (for example) projector. I had a badged version of one of these. It's based on the Mark 501D with just the one speed of 18 fps. As Brian said it takes the 8v 50w "Spaceman" (A1/17) lamp. These can be bought for about £30. The filament in this lamp is extremely fragile. You should let the projector cool down after use before moving it. It's said that it's possible to fit a LED bulb into one www.instructables.com/id/Eumig-Mark-502D-LED-Bulb-Upgrade/

Modifying the projector to accept this 8V50V EFM halogen bulb,while still probably not easy,but at least no electrical work had to be done. And that EFM lamp still could be easily obtainable,too. [Smile]

The lamp Nantawat refers to is readily available in the UK for £10 to £11 or less if bought in bulk. It needs a MR16 connector and the wires from this could be easily connected to the existing terminals. The problem is that there's barely enough room to fit the lamp and, again, how do you support it securely? I've tried finding an alternative myself without success.

I have found the Movie Maker est report for the later (I think just a changed casing) 501D. That states that on test that for their recommended screen brightness the screen for Super 8 should be 31 inches wide and 27in for Standard 8, but double for a glass beaded screen. It also states that an f1.3 lens would give nearly half as much light on screen, it being the standard Eumig 32.5mm barrel any from the previous 4 or five years would fit.

One surprise was that in the same issue Vidicord announced its first Super 8 telecine machine (B&W at hat time) a modified Eumig Mk 712!!! Only £350 at the time when Movie Maker was 3/6d an issue (17.5p)!!!!!

I have a 501D and I've fitted a f:1.3 15-30mm zoom lens taken from a scrapped Mark 8. It was a straight swap and, yes, it gives a brighter picture.
