I was thrilled to find this forum. I have owned the autoload B+H since 1972. After 30 tears I pulled it out again to view my parents super 8 home movies. After fixing the drive belt , rubber wheel I find that the projection is a BLOB of dim light. Is this the proper forum to ask for some troubleshooting help and advice?

Either the bulb is worn and needs to be replaced or is not inserted properly

Thank you. Do you know if the led conversions work as well as advertised? (TVEDEN) for example. Or should I find an old school replacement?

I am not a technician therefore cannot advise you on if this can be done. As a standard, go by the information printed within the lamphouse for the ANSI bulb code. Normally 3 letters. The code will vary on these models. The common bulb on the sound machines was DJL but this does not mean a DJL will work in your machine, but it might.

Maybe you can Google the projector model number, and add the lamp for projection to it. Something lime this:

Bell and Howell model 471A lamp type

And then see what happens. You could also check for a manual online that could contain the ansi code for your model.

Caution should be used when trying other bulbs, even if they fit the socket. You want to be sure the wattage and volts are proper or other damage could happen.

Just one question off topic. I see you are from Prospect, CT. Is that on the border to Naugatuck? You might be right near route 8? I was a little kid and grew up in Beacon Falls!

Welcome Calvin! The Tveden bulb conversion does work yet a bit expensive. I believe they still also have a kit to do your own conversion. I bought all the parts and modified my B&H projector myself. You can see it in this post:

Thank you to all. I'll search out a replacement. My projector is a 30 volt bulb.

Chip, Prosoect is indeed next to Naugatuck. Beacon Falls and Prospect are a regional school district.

Calvin, If you decide to convert your projector to a more modern halogen bulb...you should use the ELB 80W 30V bulb which is equivalent to the old DLD.

This is a very good source for projector lamps use the toll-free number call and ask for Mr. Miller he will guide you to the right one please note your model number is not listed on that page so do the homework before making a purchase

If so, it's possible that the small pins have corroded and are not passing enough current. Look at the pins, they should be bright and shiny. If not, give them a very gentle clean with some fine wet and dry.

Cleaning the lens was my first step. The bulb lit so I was convinced the lens ws bad. I didn't know that the bulb could be dim enough to lose distinct format on the screen. The bulb in the projector is 40 years old and I have no idea how many hours are on the bulb.

I'm up an viewing Super 8! I called Tveden lamp modules and made a purchase. While talking to George he advised that me lens was suspect, he was correct. I acquired an alternate lens and was amazed that I thought the lens I had was clear.
I purchased a plug in module along with an additional bulb and George shipped for free.

Glad to hear you're up and running Calvin! I believe the time and money you have spent upfront will be well worth it in the long run. With the lens and lamp upgrades your Bell and Howell should run a long time. They are well-built workhorse projectors.
