Hello. New member here but not new to 8mm Coming back after a 40 year break! I've yet to delve into the attic to hunt down my old movies (all shot on std 8)

So,in anticipation, and to get my head back round the mechanics of projectors, I've got my hands on a Eumig 710d.
Everything powers up, new lamp and full set of gates, cogs etc.
I've set it up for super 8 at the moment as I've got some old film I can use to test.
Film loads and gets as far as the gate and doesn't progress any further.
Whilst I can't see it, I'm guessing that the claw isn't engaging with the film to pull it forward.

It looks like there should be two claws, but I've since read that the dual format versions only have one.

Is it possible to move the claw so that it engages correctly, or is it likely that the claw has broken in some way?

If someone changed the gate between gauges without checking the claw was retracted (by lining up the mark on the inching knob and the case) the claw could have been sheared off.

As mentioned it may be that the single claw has been broken off.
This can happen on the dual-gauge models if the gate assembly is withdrawn (for gauge changing) without the inching knob being correctly set by positioning its red dot to the 12 o'clock position where it withdraws the claw.

I have a 712D which may be similar to the 710D as regards the claw, Tony. Remove the gates following the advice set out above by Maurice. Now, pull the lens out. By looking through the lens holder at the gate on mine, I can see the claw arm. At the end of this there's a brass insert holding a pin about 2 mm long. I hope it's the same on your 710D.

All looks ok with the claw.
However, I cannot get the film to advance any further than what I assume to be the sound pick up (after the loop)

Are there any reasons why it should stop at that point?

I can only think that either the pressure pads for the sound heads are stopping it or the film is reaching there a little out of true so not going through the gap.

It's possible that there's a piece of broken film lodged in the sound head path.

did you manage to resolve this? I have a similar issue with my 710 D the film won't make it past the gate, it just chews up the film - i've relegated it to the wardrobe!
EDIT - i've disassembled it again and discovered (i hope!) that the claw is intact... i'm guessing it's just a straight pin?

but the film goes past the gate (which i thought it wasn't) and just bunches when it's trying to get past what i think is the sound bit?

any clue to rectify it? i'm about to sell as spares and repair!

A couple of possible causes are the guides not lining the film up with the slot for the heads or the pressure pads are not lifting in thread mode to let the film through.

You are holding the black part with the finger grip under the lens down when you thread aren't you?

Yes, holding the black bit down, it all looks like it’s moving ok. I’m guessing it’s a specialist job to adjust pressure plates etc?

I have no idea how to adjust or who could do it. However, another thought is when the film gets to that point stop the motor and try moving it on by hand using the inching knob at the back so you can see exactly where it is getting stuck, even at 18 fps it is too fast to judge exactly.

ok well i have had some success! I found why it wasn't threading - THIS!! was jammed in the film path (who the heck does a splice like that??)

BUT - now i have jumpy picture on one film (don't know if it's just the film though as the other one ran through fine.
also no SOUND [Confused]

i can see a sound strip on the film but not even a hum or anything

A paper clip as well? I was going to suggest that some broken film could be causing the problem. I have a S 712D with no sound as well unless I connect it to an external amplifier. These projectors are 50 years old or so and electronic components might have failed.
