Hello, still hunting and learning. What thoughts can anyone share on this model?
Thanks,
Mike

While we have some different opinion and experiences, I don't quite like Sankyo where the body is too plasticky. The motor can suddenly stop after long time without use. I prefer Elmo-800 with bigger capacity (800 feet against 600 feet for Sankyo 500) and metal made body.
Cheers,

Michael - As Winbert says, it is a matter of opinion. I personally swear by them. Sankyo have served me well for the last 40 years. Although I don't own a 500, I have several 700's, a 702 and an 800. They are also very kind to films as long as you keep the path clean. Incidentally, the Bell and Howell range that start with the prefix DC are just a Sankyo by a different name and do the job just as well.
I agree with Winbert re Elmo. I like them and, of course, the GS1200 is considered one of the best ever.
The only make I am not fond of, and this may open a can of worms as many here adore them, is Eumig. Any I have used just felt as if they underperformed. Plastic gate, weak contact with sound heads.
….. right.... let me head straight into my bunker !

I too, have many Sankyos, and the badged Bell & Howell models, but not a Sound 500. I find them very good with no problems. They are well made for their original prices.
The Stereo 800 is, of course, the favoured model.

Great info!
I guess there is much to do with personal preference and bad or good experiences with a given model or brand.
I am also just catching on the the model numbers often relate to the reel size handling ability, which good to understand.
Although I am noting the mentions of sought after models so if one comes available I'll be more prepared. Just with so many out there its tricky to not pick up something known within this community as problematic and waiting for a reply could mean missing out on a good deal on a great machine.
Thanks again,
Mike
