I am looking for a 1600 ft. reel that will fit on the Elmo ST1200HD. I know there was a sight that sold them new but can't remember what it was. Anyway, if anyone has one they would like to sell I would appreciate it.

There is the place that actually makes the reels. It's Tayloreel Corp. You have to place an order for at least 24 reels. I think I paid $9.00 a reel plus shipping. The also take Paypal. [Smile]

Last I heard, Taylor had ceased production of Super 8 reels. Not sure if that's true or not. They only made 1200' reels, not 1600ft reels....

BTW -- I'm expecting some 1600ft "Supaspool" reels (as well as a couple of GS-1200s!!) in part 2 of the super 8 collection I'm selling off. I'll post here when I have them...

They still sell the 1600' reels. I bought a case of them recently. You have to request a special order for 1200' reel' with small hubs in order to accommodate 1600' of film. They will actually make them for your special order. [Cool]

I got an email from Ray Healy of www.filmclassic.com as well, also stating he's sold out BUT he did say he was expecting another shipment of the 1600' super-8 reels (blue/small core) in "a couple weeks." He promised to let me know when that happens, so here's hoping. [Smile]

In the meantime I'm definitely checking out the Tayloreel website (thanks)!!!

And guess what else? I just won four Goldberg 1600' super-8 reels on eBay for a killer price... now these are actual 1600' reels, larger than 1200' ones so (from what I'm told) they will fit on an ST-1200HD as a take-up reel but not as a supply reel.

I'm actually thinking about re-selling 3 of these 4 reels, one at a time, to whoever wants them around here to use as a take-up reel on their Elmo machines. Then it just comes down to picking up the blue small-core 1600' reels so we can all have "matched sets" of take-up and supply reels for those uber-long films. [Big Grin]

And can you let us know when you hear back from Ray Healey? I had e-mailed them about a month or so ago inquiring about those blue 1600 ft reels and was also told they were on back-order, but I've never heard anything more. Fortunately, I was able to find one on e-bay (I mentioned this to you in another post) but it is so wobbly as a take-up reel, it would probably be better to use it as a supply reel. If I ever get my hands on an ST1200HD, I can then do as you are planning to do.

BTW, I am so excited, I actually WON that Sankyo 800 Stereo projector! Now I just hope its as good as the guy says it is.

And wouldn't you know just today I found an ST1200HD on e-bay with a current price of $15, and the only thing it needs are belts. I may have to bid on IT as well!! [Smile]

As for the 1600ft. reels of mine... well, first off, Ray did tell me he'd be getting a new shipment of the blue plastic reels "in a couple weeks" so I'm giving him time to get back to me. I don't think he forgot about it, it just isn't time yet... but by early or mid-May I'll contact him again if he doesn't do it first.

I was actually bidding on the one you got from eBay but it just wasn't worth >$30 to me - I guess you felt differently! [Big Grin]

As for it being so wobbly... I've had the same problem with my (non-Elmo) 1200' reels and the 1600' Goldberg ones. One trick I've discovered is to cut the center out of a small 50' reel and superglue it to the back of the large reel. It mostly helps to stabilize and center the reel on the spindle; in fact, my 1200' reel just happens to run perfectly straight now, with the flanges never touching the film. [Smile]

It's just a bit tedious having to go through the same process with the 1600' reels now. I actually wish Elmo had designed the spindles on the ST-1200HD a bit differently.

Will I be selling 3 of the 4 1600' reels? Right now I'm not sure. You see, I'm desperate enough to try and modify the supply reel arm so the reels actually fit on the projector and I won't have to depend on the blue small-core reels! (I'm too impatient!) But we can make a deal, of course, if you really want one or more of them - but how about you receive the Sankyo first and check it out to make sure it really, really takes the full-size 1600' reels. [Smile]

In fact, I gave up almost as soon as I'd taken that picture - I realized I'd have to really hack the reel arm to pieces to even try and lengthen it (and insert additional cog wheels etc.) and I figured, why ruin a perfectly good projector by cobbling together some ugly contraption that isn't reversible?
Now I'm thinking about simply constructing a separate reel arm on its own stand, with a rewind motor and all... *full of ideas* [Roll Eyes]

What about finding old 35mm projector arms, adding the brass adapter out near the finger switch? The idea here would be to build something that could support the large arm inlign with the upper feed sprocket of the projector. This would work for Jan on the supply end as he has fit a 1600 foot reel to the take up arm. In this method NO modification to the Elmo would be required. This was my base idea that brought upon my Tower project that I have posted here before.

Jan, I got my Sankyo 800 Stereo projector. As it turns out, it is configured to handle the 1200 ft reels alright, but as for 1600 ft, it is really just the 1600 ft reels that are the same diameter as the 1200 ft reels (the blue ones with the small core). While I don't have an actual 1600 ft reel to test on it, I can see visually that it wouldn't hold a real any larger than the 1200 ft diameter. I'm glad I didn't go ahead and buy actual 1600 ft reels without first getting the projector. [Smile]

So, um - did the Sankyo come with any of those small-hub 1600' reels at all? Or do you still only have the one you'd won on eBay?
Me, I'm still looking for a solution to use my full-size reels as supply reels on the ST-1200HD... if I can't find any 16mm/35mm rewinds on eBay for cheap I might go to the local hardware store looking for stuff to build my own rewind arm with (I do have spare spindles and such). [Smile]
