I just picked up two episodes of the Fleischer Superman cartoon series from the early 1940s on super 8: "Bulleteers" and "The Mummy Strikes." Does anyone know if any other episodes from this series were released on super 8? I think that there were 17 in all. I'd also be interested in knowing if anyone has any of them available for sale. Thanks, SGB

A couple of conventions back Keith put on an episode that featured a mad scientist. "Mad Scientist" may even have been the title. Interestingly a sequence from this particular cartoon was homaged in "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and part of the reason why we ran the opening 20 minutes at the last BFCC.

Thanks, John. Nice to know that there are indeed other episodes of this marvelous cartoon out there. I'll keep looking. SGB

Dear Scott,

The Fleischer Superman episode that John was on about was "The Magnetic Telescope" and it was released by Niles films in the U.S., they did a couple of other "Superman" cartoons, but I can't think of them at the moment, but they were quite good prints (considering the source material).

I remember renting the "Magnetic Telescope" from the Library in Pinole, California! Funny that you use to be able to rent Super 8 movies for free at the library. I remember the colors as being gorgeous and the animation top rate. I use to rent this once every 3 weeks or so and then one day they informed me that they sold off all the Super 8's at a garage sale for the library!
I always wonder what happened to that one print.

Also in Hayao Miyazaki's 'Laputa' and even more directly in one of his "Lupin III" TV episodes....

I love the Fleischer Superman shorts, would be great to have them on S8...

As a poor, but free, subsitute in the meantime, one can download most of them, plus some other great old cartoons, here:

Thanks, Daniel. If the color is unfaded and the condition of the film is good, I'll gladly buy it. Please let me know how much you want for it via the forum or a private message. All the best, SGB

That cartoon, "Magnetic Telescope" (or is it "Mad Scientist"?) was actually the first in the series of Superman cartoons done by the Fleisher studio, (that is, if it's the one where Superman gets beaten down by the giant ray. It was also of extra length, (the full original running time was very close to 9 and a half minutes!) This was because it had a longer first part explaining Supermans origins, thean the rest of the series. I used to have that cartoon, wish I still did.
