Hey,guess where your films wound up? Doesn't it get you a little peeved when you offer a nice deal for REAL collectors and the films wind up on Greed Bay?

Blackie, don't forget to get back to me on a trade and/or etc., Shorty

Hey folks ...
Though the buyer of those prints who put them up on ebay can answer for themselves, lets make something very clear ...
Once those films are sold, no one, and I mean NO ONE, not even the seller of those prints, has the right to bi**h about what is done with those prints (or any object).
Some folks make they're living by buying and reselling prints and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a person doing so.
I just got rather peeved when I read that snippy comment about "greed bay". Though it has it's problems, "Greed bay" is an absolutely honorable place to buy OR sell things.
I stand by these comments and though I'm not the buyer who placed them on ebay, I stand by his/her right to do so.
(ought to be interesting to see how well those pinky prints sell.
If the buyer of those could, could they please send me an e-mail with a link.)

Osi, I had the same thing happen to me just recently. Film I really wanted sold right under my nose to someone else at the BFCC and that ended up on ebay just 2 weeks later.
Although I didn't agree with the dealer selling it to this guy as I had told him earlier in the week that I wanted it and would pick it up from Ealing it's still up to the guy that paid his money for it to do what he likes with it....that's his prerogative and nothing to do with me.
Anyway lets have no further member bashing. Its one of the rules on this forum that personal attacks on other members means the order of the boot. Not aimed at you Osi
Kev.

I agree, I mean no one likes losing out on a bargain, or even a print they really wanted, but then again no one really likes losing period, and I think that is what happens in these cases, someone beat someone else to the punch and once that happens it has to be..... "next!", and start looking for the next bargain and hope this time you are first.....I have had some steals in my life, and some frustrations, but that is part of the game, that ain't gonna change, and ebay is a godsend because it puts a worldwide film store at your fingertips 24 hours a day....

Look,I'm not bashing ANYONE! I am however bashing the system, which sorry boys,I don't like. I grew up aroung real collectors, dealers were people who got films from sources that weren't available to me.Were there questionable dealers?Of course there were, but I think if you ask any collector who has collected before ebay, they would say the change is not for the better. When you have the "dealer" and collector fighting for the same film,it;s just not real fair.I've bought a bit on ebay, had good deals and been misled on prints too many times. As I had said before,if the "dealers" were a tad more honest on print quality,it would improve things greatly. If someone says a print has a couple splices,it shouldn't mean over 30! Understand something,I love this hobby, grew up with it and dealt with dealers who loved it too,but now too many people who once dealt in pogs, baseball cards, etc, have got into film solely for profit.I just don't have the time for them,as film collecting is now a VERY specialised hobby with a finate amount of product,we should work together, not try to be in film only for profit.THAt is not a collector.I hope there might be a little more understanding in what I'm trying to say.I was not involved in buying online for many years, not until a couple of years ago,did I find all this. But,ponder this, wouldn't it be fun to once a month get a Yahoo room and make a weekend film convention online.Collectors could list films from their collection to sell and swap.Being in a Yahoo room,we can all chat online while doing it.It would bring a little personal feel to hobby that is greatly missing.Just an idea.

I do understand John's frustration.
Some forum members are filmdealers or seem to be and they also seem to be online a lot.
So whenever there turns up a bargain, it often gets snapped away by them.
It happened to me too, because I work mainly on location and irregular and therefor I'm very often not online.
So perhaps the rule "comes first, served first" should be changed by "best motivation".
If someone offers a film again for free or very cheap, the motivation of the potential buyer should be more important then the fastest response.
Although I do understand this is theoretical and probably impossible in practice.

Hans, very well stated! I agree with you 100 percent! At times over the years I felt like offering different films and equipment items for free or nearly free here on the Forum to a member or members who would really appreciate it for their collections, and not just take it to re-sell for a profit, but realized that isn't possible unless replying to a specific request from someone.

Again I just want to add that while I always want to get a print as affordable as I can, and use ebay (my wife might say 'abuse' ebay) to find the stuff i can't find otherwise. the snatching up of deals and reselling is simply free enterprise... Ever try to buy a ticket to a concert or sporting event? the good ones are at the resellers....Ever wonder how people get those massive collections where it works out to like pennies per print? Its cuz they have the money to buy 1000 prints at one time, and usually the only way is because they are gonna resell em and that is how they.....I would love to be involved with this hobby and have everyone only buy and acquire the prints they want to keep, but it doesn't work that way... Everybody is different..Some guys want a massive collection to call their own, other want to watch a print once and then get a different one...I recently offered up some copies of a trailer for a small charge and I simply told the first person who stated they'd like them all that I really wanted them to go to people who would want them and be able to get some enjoyment out of them so would they mind only taking one....They were polite and said sure....We are all nice folks on here, but just have different views on things which extend beyond whether we like disney cartoons or fleischer, or both, etc.... Imagine the fights we could get into if it were the "8MM & POLITICAL VIEWS FORUM" . I think the point is everyone has a right to like or dislike the practice of reselling, but just go about expressing it without the cost of hurting someones feelings just because they see it differently.....That is why I love this forum so much more than some others because it isn't plagued by the name-calling and aggro-bashing.....Once that starts it is really all too easy to find yourself right in there with em, without even realizing it....Spread the love of the medium man

Come on guys this forum is open to all and that includes dealers. Lets remember that we have Derann, Perrys and Foster Films as members.
If people want to buy up film and then sell them on that's really up to them.
I have HAD to sell some of my collection in times gone past because of financial reasons but that doesn't make me a dealer it just makes me hard up
Some people sell film to supplement their income...so what! At least they are letting us know about it via the forum instead of having to do continual searches on ebay.
Yes ebay could be described a greed bay but thats down to ebay and not the sellers. Ebay decided some while back to up their commission in certain categories and DVD was one of them which they just happen to have "Other Film Formats" under. Anyone selling film under that heading is not going to want to lose out to ebay and their higher fees so will want more for their films to cover the costs.
I have a number of films listed for sale in the 8mm section and although most of them have now sold there are titles which have not so I will probably resort to ebay to shift them. Why I am selling them is of no concern to other members of this forum but it doesn't make me a dealer.
At the end of the day it doesn't matter if films are sold via the forum or ebay they do eventually end up in another collectors collection or remain unsold I do however get the impression that if certain people don't get the films they want by whatever method they feel it right to attack on here via the forum.
Generally this forum has a community of happy members who like to discuss the many angles of film and collecting etc so please if you have a gripe with an individual then take it up directly with them and not via me or the forum.
Life is just too short and ebay is here to stay
Kev.

Well put Kevin ...
I have noticed that there has been a a number of vicious diatribes on this forum which is actually very unlike our forum ...
(I bet another certain film forum is rubbing thier hands together gleefully at our dissension in the ranks, giggle!)
... and in either case it was one person who was miffed taking it out on another, when there was blame on both sides, or just being peeved that they weren't the first to the deal.
I should hope that folks won't stop being generous. By the way, the person who lucked out on the Hoppity film and Tom and Jerry cartoon, has also offered many a free print on this forum.
This person doesn't need my kudo's and can defend himself most admirably, but I thought I would defend, just the same.
Yes, it's OSI, defender of the good and just, fighting evil with his trusty sidekick ... Devin Osgood, Baby Boy Wonder!

Don't worry Osi this hobby features many generous folks (thankfully this includes people especially generous with the wealth of knowledge ) Everybody has those days when they just go and then get over it and move on....I think we have just had a few of those lately ..... but hey..... Ever bought an ex library print and found this.......No one ever rented it.....Best news ever ! ! !! !

Hey,most collectors are great guys and I've made many lifelong friends. I think this forum is great. There are many generous guys here and dealers like Derann,CHC,Roger Williams and others should be thanked daily for all they've done for the hobby. It is these people, not an auction site that has kept our hobby alive.Bless them one and all! By the way,how about the online convention? It would be a great way to get to know each other better.

First come, first served always seemed fair to me.
John,
How about starting a new post in the 8MM Forum section about a possible online convention and what would be involved?
Also....how is Roger Williams doing? I haven't heard about him for some time.
Doug

Why not use the forums chat room situated in the left menu bar? As Doug said, please start a new thread in the General Yak area.
