Hi just wondering what the going price is on this and how often they become available. Thanks Will

This is I think the best of the best digests that Universal 8 ever produced. This usually goes for between 25 and 45 dollars on ebay.

However, be very careful to be sure of the color quality, as this digest has been one to suffer lots of fade. Either this or part 1 will be just fine while part 2 will have a little more fade, (the case with mine. Still watchable but noticeable)

Hi thanks for the reply will keep that in mind when bidding for one.

I agree with Osi as this is indeed one of the best two-parters (if not THE best) ever released by U8. It's amazing how well the plot is condensed into 35 minutes. Also, check out the 200ft version. Spectacular editing work digesting the whole film into just over 10 minutes.

Hi being completly new to all this im still digesting the fact that movies are cut down to 40mins never mind 10 [Smile] i have a 200ft reel with 3 movies on that which is strange frankenstein, dracula and wolfman all about 3 mins each.Im really looking forward to getting jaws i have already ordered jaws 2 which is on 1 400ft reel but have heard its also very good.

Jaws 2 is also a fairly good edit, but JAWS is great, and in the letterbox format, but the print is so nice and sharp, it still looks great, without loosing much information in the picture!

Hi , I managed to pick up a the 2x400' edition of Jaws, still in the plastic cases with the original card covers, from Gumtree for £10.00. Very strong colours and what a find! And yes the editing is super, I read years ago that Spielberg himself actually edited the 400' cutdown of Close Encounters, can any one elaborate? Thanks

Found it thanks what i also saw was a jaws on 600ft is that any good? or should i stick with getting the 2 x 400ft?

Posted by Joe Taffis (Member # 4) on July 13, 2011, 05:32 AM:

the 2X400' fit on a 600' reel; so that's probably the same thing.

Ah i see will keep an eye on the ebay one as its £45 on independent 8's website.

William - the "Jaws" on Independent 8 listing is £45.00 less 30% discount = £30.00. Barry is great to deal with, and he is "there" if there is any problem (not an 'unknown factor' like some E-Bay sellers).

I can vouch for Barry as well. As a yank, I only deal with three UK dealers on a semi-regualt basis ...

Derann
Independent 8
Perry's Films

All three have never dis-appointed. Another thing about Barry i that when he prices a film, he doesn't base his assessment of the film only concerning the "film" itself.

What do I mean by that?

Some dealers, (I won't mention the names) will assess the quality of the film based upon what shape the actual celuloid is in, and not the color, so while the film itself will be an "A" grade for those dealers, the color may well be a "B" or even sometimes a "C", but they won't necessarily tell you that.

But Barry will most definitely sell yuo a good film, with good color, and will always notify the customer if there is a condition problem, whether color or otherwise.

Didnt even notice that Keith thanks for heads up.Osi you would make a great sales man [Smile] but looks like he is honest in his descriptions about each movie.

Just realised that 30% offer is no longer ended 30/06/11 [Frown]

William, give Barry a call - you never know?

Posted by William Fleming (Member # 2632) on July 14, 2011, 01:31 AM:

Will give him a call later, as they say if you dont ask you dont get.

Have spoken to Barry on phone now and reserved a copy of jaws on 1 x 600ft assuming it has same as 2 x 400ft also picking up jaws 2 tomorrow when i get my new projector. Will also get close encounters but its on ebay at £5 at moment so gonna watch it for few days.

this brings up an intreresting question I'd like to ask our UK members ...

We're the Jaws 2X400ft digests in the UK on low fade stock? (while the US versions were either KodakSP or worse, eastman?)

I'd be willing to start a new search for a low dade copy of this digest!

Osi, I never heard and got an evidence of Universal 8 films printed on low fade stock.

Only those 200" feet cartoon (Woodywoodpecker) is found to be on AGFA.

I might be wrong only if members here can show their 400' or 2 x 400' on AGFA/LPP

Winbert,

Some of the last Universal 8 releases were indeed on LPP and the occasional re-print, but it was down to the lab they were using for each title, so it's a bit of a lottery, then and now.

I'm looking for a Jaws 2 x 400' on Super 8 sound if anyone has a good copy they want to sell.

Sorry to disagree gentlemen, but Ithink the best of the edited
2x400s from U8 were "The Sting"& "High Plains Drifter" which
had very good editing and both had excellent print/sound.
The "Jaws" edition suffered from the omission of the underwater
"severed head" shock scene and print quality wasn't as good as the 200' edition whereas the above two showed how a digest
could include all the key scenes and tell the story coherently.

Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on February 17, 2012, 01:31 PM:

I miss the "severed head" shot in the digest too! Would have been great to have it in there, even if to have that shot, (and at least enough footage to suround it for storytelling), would have not allowed it to fit a 600ft reel ...

but actually, this 600ft digest is slightly shorter in length that the other Universal 2X400ft digests. I think "1941" is the longest, as the film actually spills over slightly. You still have a good minute or more of room with the Jaws digest on a 600ft reel.

I actually prefer "Animal House" when it comes to the U8 2x400 digests. The only thing I didn't like about it was the omission of the stuffed-bra scene :-)

Another superb 2 x 400ft cut down is High Plains Drifter, again some prints are suffering with some fade, i have a good copy at present and want to keep it until it starts to fade but athe editing is very good .

Osi and I are the" severed head men" Christian misses his "stuffed
bra", theres definately room for a thread on favourite scenes that
are missing from our digests.Any more out there?
One that really pissed me off was the omission of the nude
seduction scene by Linda Hayden in "Blood On Satan's Claw"
and there was room to put it in as the running time was just
over an hour!
