Yep and congratualations, your number #31 to inform me! I think I'll end up bidding on it out of curiousity, more than anything else. Perhaps, with it's fade, it's not a faded as the print I currently have.

One thing is for sure, as soon as I find out, I'll have an extra print of this title that I'll sell right off for no more than that starting bid, so if anyone else is wanting it, note that you'll get it anyhow, and without having to bid it up!

Judging by the scans, I don't think you could get redder than this print. It looks more than a little faded.

I agree, though the beginning of the film itself has a sunrise, so the beginning will always have a more reddish content, but the other reels do not look any better.

Osi, have you ever tried searching for it on 16mm as there may be good colour copies around. In saying that I have a grizzly TV episode on 16mm that has perfect colour (well it did the last time I looked at it).

Well, I decided to bid on it. Hey if I got it for the 19.99, even faded, well, that's not a big chunk of cash, (heck , I've paid more than that for 8 minute cartoon shorts), so it's no big loss ...

... but there was something else I think I caught in the photos which may mean that it has slightly better color than the photos show, so while it has fade, it may not be as bad as pictured. Did you folks catch it?

It appears to be magnetic sound, but I don't see a balance stripe. Balance stripes aren't usually important, unless your projecting scope.

Osi- I couldn't figure out what you were talking about in reference to the colors. Start 'splainin' [Razz]

From the photos, it is very obvious the film is with optical sound. I can see the optical track a bit faded too. No magnetic brown strip is seen.

OK Film collecting #102

What I noticed ....

Sometimes what you need to concentrate on is not the film shown, but the surroundings.

When I first saw the screenshots, I thought, (as Micheal did) ech! This print is terribly faded. Than, upon a second perusal of the shot with the film above a piece of paper, something occurred to me ...

I KNOW that paper, and I know for a fact that that paper, (and what is printed on it) is WHITE, not orangish, as the film appears as well.

Therefore, we see a situation of bad photography, making everything a little too orangish.

Therefore therefore ....

If the paper, seen in the photograph is shot wrong, giving the paper an orangish hue, perhaps the film, also given an orangish hue, might actually be better than what is pictured as well! It will certainly appear different when I recieve it, how much better or worse, I will find out on Monday, when it is estimated to arrive, and I will report back on that.

So, just a little detective work that I personally think all of us can potentially benefit from when it comes to the choice of "bid or not to bid" on an auction. Don't just look at the image on celluloid, look at the surroundings as well.

You shouldn't use glasses with a rose tint to look at a faded print, it makes it worse. [Roll Eyes]

Still, I assert, that the print my be a little better than what is represented in the photo. I'm not expecting perfect color, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a little better than pictured. However, even if it isn't, it only cost me 20 dollars, and that's not so bad!

By the way, I was looking at the print I currently have in my collection and I'm starting to feel that perhaps this may be a case of a print that never had absolute spot on perfect color.

I was looking at reel 4 of the 4 reels (on 400ft reels, as I have it), and there are whole sequences where it appears that the color is near perfect or pretty darned close and then the very next shot will look much more faded. Perhaps this is the case.

I also have "Force 10 From Navarone" and while the whole print is gorgeous color, there is one, perhaps, five minute sequence, (when they are parachuting in) that is at night-time and has a terrible reddish hue to the whole scene. The rest of the print, even the night scenes have perfect blacks to the print, but not this scene ... it's a red mess, (and we taint talkin about Russia now ... [Big Grin]

... so this could be the case with "Grizzly" as well.

This is one of the unpleasant truth's about optical sound super 8. While I love collecting it so, it also tended to be a niche in super 8 that was never meant to last. If they had the opportunity, the film labs used the worst film stocks until they ran out, and only then would they print with LPP or Agfa or FUJI (I'm just assuming AGFA, but I do have a few Japanese optical super 8's that are on fuji, don't figure, eh?

One of the othe posters stated, (I think Winbert) that the photo's were taken under a tungsten bulb or lamp, but theat alone serve to potentially validate my opinion that it could be better than expected. I was looking at that print I already have again and it's quite frustrating to see that most of reel 4 only shows little fade while the rest of the print is not so stellar. Here's hoping that it will be at least OK.

Yes that was me Osi. But see the other photos that is not under the tungsten light, it still gives reddish hue. So I wanted to describe that the seller's camera has a perfect color balance. Therefore, I would say the 3 reels are reddish as usual. But again, it is only $20 as you said.

I just bought it from The Mighty Oz! But, I had a senior moment. It's optical sound and I don't have a projector for optical sound [Eek!]

So there you have it. I never watched the print. As soon as I started to play it I realized that I goofed [Embarrassed]

The color has turned but that is always an opinion of the individual watcher. I did put it on larger reels. So there you have it [Smile]
