Full feature in good condition, how much would you let your film go for? I am extremely keen on getting this movie and usually alnost everything has a price they say
Thank you

I would very surprised if you could get a print for less than £300, unless it's faded or damaged. I have been looking for a print of "The Lion King" and so far the cheapest I've seen it go for is 175 GBP, and I think that's less in demand than Alien.
Posted by Vidar Olavesen (Member # 3354) on January 21, 2013, 11:46 AM:
I'd have no problem paying 300 GBP for it ... But it needs to be in decent shape though ... Anyone?
Thanks, Christian

I sold an excellent print of Alien for $1000 (£630) last summer.
Posted by Vidar Olavesen (Member # 3354) on January 21, 2013, 03:06 PM:
So at that price I should expect perfect?
Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 21, 2013, 03:13 PM:
At that price I'd expect Sigourney Weaver.

Amazing these prices. Four years ago I bought Alien..perfect print ..for $250. gorgeous re-recorded stereo... lovely print. and no..unless I was desolate and needing money in the worst way, I would NEVER part with that film.
Posted by Christian Bjorgen (Member # 1780) on January 22, 2013, 11:56 AM:
I never really liked "Alien" (I'm not a alien-monster-movie kind of person), so if I stumble across one I'll make sure to let you know, Vidar

Thanks, Christian ... Independent 8 is also looking for me
Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 23, 2013, 05:21 AM:
Vidar,my advice, for what it's worth, would be to seek out a print on 16mm rather than pay extortionate sums for an 8mm version.
The 16mm is going to have better print quality anyway.

You’ll find US prices are much higher than the UK for sure Vidar which is why so many Uk films wind up in the US. Same thing could be said for the vintage film gauge 9.5mm as the French will happily pay a high price. Example: Robocop full length Derann sold in the Uk for £70 on a bring & buy at a film event, Gone with the Wind full length original boxes sold at Blackpool FCC a little over a year ago for £130. Another thing to keep in mind is the ‘retro brigade’ who collect for the boxes and even equipment. Prices are up as retro seems to be in at the moment probably as we have reached a generation change with all the modern technology vs old. We were talking about this only last Sunday, but at the end of the day it all depends how much you want something I guess. As we all get older I think we all start to get a bit nostalgic which is certainly the case with me.
Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 23, 2013, 06:15 AM:
Same with me Lee, perusing old movie magazines and wishing
those old cine companies were still with us. I suppose nostalgia
does take it's hold, but then common sense rears it's head and
asks the question, do I really want to pay over the odds for a
particular film that only interests me.As you rightly say some
folks are mainly after the boxes, me the films the thing, boxes
are okay, but the film is more desirable.
Posted by Ronald Kwiatkowski (Member # 3349) on January 23, 2013, 06:41 AM:
Interesting point, Hugh, about 16mm versus high-priced 8mm. I don't see myself paying 1000$ for ANY movie, no matter how good the print is. You can have most of them on Bluray for a dime anyway, so I'll keep a healthy perspective on prices. I mean, yes it's a movie, but it's only a movie. A decent 16mm print for a quarter price of the 8mm super-scope-stereo-nolines-blastingcolors-print is a very valuable argument if you love movies and still want to be able to feed your dog. I suppose it's open to subjectivity, but anything over 300-400$ seems (to me) over the top. Unless Weaver is included, as the man says

And she's 64 now! Time sure does fly.
Posted by Vidar Olavesen (Member # 3354) on January 23, 2013, 06:59 AM:
Wouldn't mind a 16mm print ... Anyone has one of those for a decent price then?
Oh, by the way, does the full length Alien come in boxes made for it specifically and were they originally on 400' spools?
Posted by Pasquale DAlessio (Member # 2052) on January 23, 2013, 07:42 AM:
I love Sigorney Weaver. She is very tall, has a great figure, and is still very attractive at 64! Nuff said
Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 23, 2013, 07:45 AM:
Yes that's true Lee,we're all getting old,but some of these older
actresses can still be very sexy, and I for one wouldn't mind the
chance to make a fool of myself with them, as for the ones that
have put on a bit of weight, I can make a chalk mark where I
left off while I have a cup of tea and get my breath back.
Posted by Gary Crawford (Member # 67) on January 23, 2013, 10:01 AM:
The 16's I've seen of Alien can't hold a candle to the low fade scope /stero super 8 print. 1. most of the 16's are fading, if not faded. 2. most of the 16's are flat 3. ALL of the 16's are mono.
Now there may be a low fade scope 16 out there, but if so, you may be sure that it will sell for a VERY high price as well.
Yes..some 16's are sharper....some not.
Posted by Vidar Olavesen (Member # 3354) on January 23, 2013, 10:07 AM:
I can live with flat and mono ... Would prefer as good as possible color of course. I'd be willing to buy a lower quality one, but not at 300 GBP
I am on the lookout for a scope lens, so scope would be okay, but for now, I can not see it properly. Can not seem to find a decently priced scope lens. I have a standalone bracket which should take 50-52 size I was told. None of the shops have them, asked I8, CHC, Buckingham and another one or two. One said they were common, but being a bit unsure of what I can use for my Elmo ST-1200D MO and 16mm Bauer P7 Synchro, I'd be scared to find one on eBay to find it didn't fit.

Vidar, there's a copy of "Aliens" on ebay now in 16mm, last bid
£218.00, 8 days to run.

Thanks, I really want Alien though, even if Aliens is also on my wishlist ...
Added to watchlist ... Might just want it :-)
Posted by Maurizio Di Cintio (Member # 144) on January 23, 2013, 11:58 AM:
Well, IMHO: "Alien" is a much better film than "Aliens": that's an as smart director as R. Scott vs an honest/fair director as James Cameron: the latter's film is spectacular but the former's is amazing when it comes to the cumbersome, wary and dismal atmosphere he conveys to the audience. So, from a cinema-(not film) buff standpoint "Alien" is a "must have". As for print quality, though I've never seen the DFS print of "Aliens", I bought their print of Scott's film in 1997 and still have it: one of the sharpest and most colourful prints I own; apparently the master material was struck from a positive (in fact it tends to be a little too contrasty with a very slight bluish cast, but just a tad); and rock-steady too. Simply awesome and in my opinion the only Derann release that might be judged better than this one is "Who Framed Riger Rabbit".
As for the question in this thread I really can't figure out what I'd ask for, if (and only IF) I were to sell it; I simply can't fancy selling it, for all the reasons I stated.
Good luck for your search.
Posted by Vidar Olavesen (Member # 3354) on January 23, 2013, 12:18 PM:
That's my opinion too, Ridley's masterpiece has the suspense, though Cameron's has more action. I love the feeling I get from watching Alien. I do understand you, I wouldn't have sold it either, but I hoped someone who didn't love Alien as much as I wanted to get some money instead ;-)

Vidar don't worry, someone will, they always do.I shall keep a
weather eye on the sites, and if one turns up I'll let you know.
It's usually the way, when you're looking, it isn't to be found, as
soon as you take your eye off the ball, one turns up, they always do.

Super ... Thank you and again I must say, this group is great and very helpful. None of the "big" guys have them anyway, but I won't give up hope this quick. How long has Osi been looking for that Grizzly Adams film?
Appreciated

Not long enough.

I checked out the eBay 'Aliens' listing and must say it looks as good as anyone could hope to get. BUT I'd find it offputting that the edges are cropped to make it full frame, unlike the S8 print.
I should resist getting into an 'Alien' v 'Aliens' debate, but since it has been raised, I personally feel that 'Aliens' has the edge. Not specifically because of the amount of action, although it's exceptional action, but also because it has more likeable characters and great emotional resonance, particularly due to Ripley 'adopting' Newt. And much as I like the Derann 'Alien' print, it's not quite as good as my 'Aiens'. Screening this at home for my horror associates was a memorable occasion; the first time there was a sense of the audience simply watching 'the film' as opposed to watching an 8mm version of it.

Aliens
Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 24, 2013, 05:54 AM:
Well I hate to disagree, but I will, "Alien" was a good film, many
of the situations were borrowed from other films, such as "It, The
Terror From Beyond Space" & "Planet of The Vampires", with it's
creepy planet, giant dead aliens which was used to better effect
and far less budget."Aliens" on the other hand was a typical
shoot 'em up,I thought the characters the most dislikeable bunch
ever assembled, and couldn't wait for their inevitable demise.
Both films play on the shock effect, both are well made, and I
would find it difficult to choose between them as they both
have merit.

Hello,
I own Alien 1 -3 on film. Alien and Aliens on Super 8 full feature releases by Derann. Both prints are very good an I tell you I will never sell these prints.
Alien 3 was not so good as the previous films, but still viewable. It is a 16mm print in CS with good sharpness and nice colours.
So all three films make a good triple presentation.

While I can appreciate "Alien" I liked "Aliens" more and find it more repeatable. I used to own "Alien" on Super 8 but found it a little slow. And I saw it in the theaters when it was released.
Just before I moved it on I remember watching it amd only putting on the reels that I liked. And I also remember it being not that sharp. For a truly Sharp Scope print.."Titanic" is the best I have ever seen. But everytime I see a post like this I think.."I wish I had it again". We always want what we don't have..and what we use to have!
Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on January 24, 2013, 01:18 PM:
Yep, still searching for "GRIZZLY"
The "Alien" print is outstanding. Another case of as good as the 16MM prints that I have seen of it, (only seen one actually, many years ago, not side by side mind you, but I remembered), and, in the case of my print of "Alien", It doesn't appear to have a bluish cast to it. Is yours on AGFA or LPP?
I personally like the slower pace of "Alien", almost lyrical and poetic in a manner. Thankfully, Scott captured much of the feel of "Alien" is the "prequel" "Prometheus" (I bet I spelled that wrong).
With "Alien", the slow pace allows me to "feel" the environment around the film in a much more personal way. Though I won't deny that "Aliens" is a great film, it is so noisy as a general rule, that it actually keeps me at a certian distance. I can hear all the "ambient noise" happening around the situations.
Did I make sense or just confuse people?

Hey Vidar if you can't find the feature just get a digest 400 reel . Only just try to get a Low Fade
Posted by Hugh Thompson Scott (Member # 2922) on January 24, 2013, 02:26 PM:
Hey Osi, just kidding about your long search for "Grizzly".
Posted by Vidar Olavesen (Member # 3354) on January 24, 2013, 02:27 PM:
:-) Already bougth a digest, love this film and want the complete feature.
Not sure how I know if it's low fade. It's looking decent, some german release, with english sound. Cover is german
Posted by Osi Osgood (Member # 424) on January 25, 2013, 01:31 PM:
I knew tyou were kidding and I'm STILL looking, (probably be asking people once I'm in the "pearly gates" ...
"Hey anybody got a copy of "Grizzly"?
... hear a booming voice say ...
"GET OVER IT OSI!!!!"
I must say, I wish I had never parted with my ALIEN digest as well. It wasn't low fade, but a very good eastman copy. It was a very good digest with good flow for this kind of slow paced film and I liked how it ended, right after the mother ship explodes, she says, "I got you ..." and the THE END titles!
