Hello
I am intending to sell my super 8 copies of the Star Wars trilogy (full features, not condensed), which is :

Star Wars - scope, colours, magnetic sound (Derann release)
French soundtrack, but original English scrolling titles

Empire - scope, colours, magnetic sound
original English soundtrack but German scrolling titles

Jedi - scope, colours, magnetic sound
Original English soundtrack and scrolling titles

I never projected them : I just tried the first minutes of each first reel.
The quality of image and sound is excellent : quite like new.
See screenshots links below.

Don't hesitate to contact me if you are interested, either in this forum, or through my email.

I have also many rare condensed versions (French, US, German, Italian), and trailers for each film of the original trilogy (including the rare Revenge of the Jedi).

Appart from Star Wars, I am also selling two superb super 8 copies of 2001 : A space odyssey, and First men in the moon. Both complete feature versions (not condensed). Both in scope, colours and in quite new condition. I only tried the begenning of the first reel of 2001, and First men in the moon was projected once only. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Thank you for your help !

With best regards from France

Star wars, oh yeah! I am interested, so ask me first when you decide your price, okay? English sound, right? Don't happen to have Alien too?

Star Wars with French soundtrack (but you can rerecord the English track)
Empire and Jedi with English soundtrack

I listed on ebay.fr yesterday and received a few offers yet.
So, I am waiting for more offers.

I am not selling Alien :-) This is another great SF film !

Baudime - I can't help being curious why you bought features that presumably must have cost you a lot of money and then never watched them?

Adrian
you are asking a very rational question !
In fact, as a collector of vintage Star Wars items, I have bought two copies of each feature films in super 8, and I am now selling the three spare prints I never projected because, well, priority in life have changed !

Here are a series of screenshots I just did one hour ago of the Star Wars trilogy super 8 prints I am selling.
As you will see, the image is just excellent : no reddish colors, no fade, and sharp sound.

Please note that I did not install the anamorphic lens which is the reason why the ratio is not correct.
I took the photos with my iphone which explains why the images are not sharp when spaceships or characters move too fast on screen.

Star Wars

Empire

Jedi

In the past 20 years, I never had the opportunity to see those three films on sale anywhere on internet. It won't happen before long !

And here are also screenshots for my prints of 2001 and First men in the moon :

2001

Moon

Both are for sale... (scope feature versions)

But do you know that those films can be still ordered brand new? one a member here just received a brand new print of Empire Strikes Back.

New Films can be purchased cheaper than some used!

I was just observing that if you try to find the Star Wars trilogy full features in super 8 in excellent condition, either on ebay or other websites, you just won't find it easily in this excellent condition (no fade, no reddish colors, etc.), and the three at once :-)

Well... I keep my (very good) used prints, as I said before, and I am quite sure it won't take long before those three quite new spare prints will sell :-) They are History as they are the original versions of these classic movies, before Mr Lucas spoil them with "special editions"...

Han Solo shoot first !!! [Wink]

But not in Super 8, I believe. eBay had an auction for a Standard 8mm print and in the text, he claimed it wasn't on Super 8 at all. I talk about Psycho BTW ...

And did anybody see this kind of eBay auction before? I knew I offered to little, but how can you know if a real bid is in?

Welcome to the forum!

Would you be so kind as to provide links to your eBay auctions?

Posted by Baudime Jam (Member # 3509) on January 27, 2013, 12:22 PM:

answer to Vidar : in France, ebay offers two different options, either standard auctions (like on ebay.com), but also classified, which is free of any insertion and sale fee.

I choose this option, stating in the description that potential buyers shall email me with their offer. I sold many super 8 features that way. Unfortunately, this option does not exist on ebay.com. Maybe I should write the description in English because most of the buyers are not French at all !

After only three days online, I received quite a number of offers, some serious, but also some irrational : a French buyer offered me 75€ ($100) for the three films ! Well... I am just collecting offers and the highest will get them - even if I would prefer to sell the three prints to the same buyer in order to keep them together, which is why I will consider a combined offer with preference. You know how long it is sometimes to build a collection, and it is always sad to split it...

Oh, okay, not using the french eBay so much, but it's the first time I've seen this ... If I had more money, I'd offer your decently for all three, but it's too difficult before I sell off my video game collection.

Thanks for clarifying

Hi Baudime,

I thought it could be useful to publish the links here...

Star Wars - A New Hope

Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back

Star Wars - Return Of The Jedi

Hope this is comfortable with you.. [Wink]

PS. Please note that "Empire" is not a Derann print, like you say on Ebay, but it's German print...

You are right ! I copied and pasted without paying attention...
I have fixed the description for Empire and removed "Derann" from it [Smile]
Thank you !

So if anyone is interested, just email me.
I sell the combo trilogy for 2500 euros ($3300).

I am also selling three trailers (super 8, cinemascope, colors, magnetic sound) :

Empire strikes back : trailer

Revenge of the Jedi : rare teaser

Special edition trilogy : 1997

They are in excellent condition, as the features of my collection.
A unique occasion to own a cinemascope Star Wars super 8 collection... at once !

2001 and First men in the Moon have sold...

Posted by Baudime Jam (Member # 3509) on February 01, 2013, 06:38 AM:

Hello folks,

just to let you know that the Star Wars trilogy just sold for 2250 euros ($3300) to a collector from Luxembourg.

Before that offer, I was offered 1800€ and 2000€, but also 120€ and 150€ (!!!) for the three films. Well... this was an interesting experience.

In a few days, I was contacted by a lot of potential buyer, each one having his/her own idea about the real value of these prints. But the real value of any item is the price that someone is ready to pay for it, not the average market value, especially if, like me, you are not a retailer. I had only one set of prints to sell, not a bunch of them, and still, I am sure that I could have sold them for a 3000 euros if I had devoted more time to this issue.

I would be very interested to further discuss the question of the "real value" because it raises a lot of important questions. For example, a pair of collectors argued that I was asking a too high price for my prints as it is possible to order new prints to CHC or Andec for a cheaper price (600 euros after them...).

First, I am not sure at all you can get a new print of each Star Wars films for that price. It should be confirmed and I wrote to these companies to know about it.

Second, you probably will get prints with German scrolling titles for Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, whereas the Derann prints have original English.

Third, a genuine Star Sars fan want the original and official super 8 releases, not bootlegs

Fourth, who knows if the quality will be the same ?

But mainly (fifth) if this is so easy and cheaper to get those films from laboratories, why trying to get my prints ? That's what I answered to these people. I don't mind if they want to get new prints, but I know that a serious Star Wars super-8 collector will pay the right price for such rarities, especially in this excellent condition.

Your opinion is welcome !

Now, I still have those trailers (including the rare Revenge of the Jedi), and also a series of condensed versions (from US, France, Germany and Italy) for sale : see below two of them (rare Star Wars condensed 2nd volume, and rare Empire 2nd volume).

Congratulations on your sale. That is not a bad price for them. If Star Wars normally sells for $900-1800 (Yes.. $1800 once!), Jedi for $600-900 and then Empire for $750 New..those prices are about right.
The reason why many wanted your copies is that Star Wars cannot be purchased new any longer. Jedi and Empire can. The quality of the German releases are very good from what I have heard but there was a period of time where the sound stripe was not so good with those releases. With the older versions the sound stripe hopefully should be better and I am sure the semi casual collector wouldn't want to take a chance with a newer print PLUS there is a wait time for the print to be made. The only non official release is Empire.

Well, congratulations for the sale.

To the german prints I can say, that they are all in best quality. My soundstripes have all a good quality, too.
I know some Derann-Prints that have a poor soundstripe (the black one).

BTW - Empire was/is a bootleg as a lot of other full features, too.
And if a bootleg made from a good negative, it is the same as the official.

F.e. Once upon a time in the west. It was officially released in flat by Marketing international und as bootleg in scope. And the bootleg-quality is stunning.

But you need to know the right persons to get in contact with the laboratories, because no one knows, if you can trust the contacting person or it is a spy from the studios.

You are right, that the "real value" is what you get for your prints, but I would never pay more than 400 Euros for a print (that's what I paid for Star Wars).
And if I don't get it for that price, I have to wait. Someday I will get a print of Empire... [Big Grin]

Keep perforated
Michael

to Michael Beyer : a bootleg print is not the same as an official print for a genuine collector, especially a Star Wars collector. It does not matter if the quality is better or not : owning the original release and packaging is part of the collecting process.

I am sure you understand what I mean :-)

Then having the opportunity to have a quite new set of prints for the entire trilogy is something which does happen often...

By the way, why Empire never got an official release ? The owner of the rights are the same for each film of the trilogy : why did they allow official release of SW and Jedi, and not for ESB ?

Hi Baudime,
that's something what I don't understand, too, why Derann never released Empire. Perhaps it was, because "Empire" was not as famous as the other ones of the trilogy.

BTW: The same with James Bond: the only "official" releases were some flat airline-prints. I never understand, why the films were not released on Super 8. The only ones you can get are bootlegs. And some titles are really bad quality.

quote:

To me it happened, because the formally owners of my Star Wars and Jedi are friends of mine.

I know what you mean, but I must say, if I can have a better print as bootleg than the original (f.e. Once upon a time...), I prefer the bootleg [Big Grin]
And I think, that I am a real collector, as you can see on my website [Big Grin]

I am sure you are a great collector ! (by the way, where is your website ? I would be delighted to visit it !)

I was just speaking about Star Wars collectors : their main focus is not super-8 itself, but genuine vintage items from the original trilogy. Therefore, bootlegs are not valuable for them - and I am one of them !

As for Empire, it is not the most successful movie in term of market, but it is also the favorite of all Star Wars fans. Derann would have made a lot of cash with a print of it... The mystery remains !

As for 007, I have a superb print of Goldfinger : frankly, I don't know where it was made, but sound and colors are pristine.

My website is called Michael's Super 8-Welt, but it is in german [Big Grin]
To see the list of my full features, you have to go to "Sammlung" - "Komplettfassungen". Click on the images and you will see the details of the film.

Just a little correction to my last post: Goldfinger and Thunderball were released by Derann, but I think they were the only "officials".

My Goldfinger must be a Derann print therefore.

I have visited your website : congratulations ! I have bookmarked it because it is full of informations and I will learn a lot thanks to you, especially from the technical point of view.

And it will also allow me to revise my German ! Before studying English, German was my first foreign language because my parents (musicians as I am myself) had a strong German culture and we had many friends in Germany. But then, English overtook German, especially in my professional life : I can still read it, but I lost my fluent German, even if I lived three years in Landau (Pfaltz). I miss the bretzels !

Here is one of my two professional websites and my personal fan website.

Back to super-8 : do you know if I could find a super-8 non-cinemascope print of ET with English sound and titles ?

Sorry to go off-topic again, but I had a look at your website and that looks great!

I would love to see 'The Goddess' with your score. Any chance of a UK tour at some point? Failing that, I don't suppose there is a dvd available?

Thanks Rob ! I hope we can fix such a tour one day or another : but the "market" is currently very poor in demand. To have a string quartet touring is quite expensive... But I would dream to come to the UK ! We already accompanied The Goddess in many venues in France, but also abroad and we are trying to export it in Asia (China, Singapore and Taïpeh). Next Monday, we will perform this cine-concert in Limoges : you are invited !

Speaking about music (and super-8), I would like to purchase a super 8 print of Psycho with English sound and titles : it was never released as such (only in 8mm) but if anyone know a way to get a new print (or has one for sale), I am interested. I love this film whose score I conducted many times in live concerts. Here is one of my most recent performance

I love Bernard Herrman's music. He did a lot of Alfred Hitchock & Ray Harryhausen films. On Psycho he only used strings. And Journey to the Center of the Earth he used woodwinds. Very creative composer. But I loved his Harryhausen scores the most.

Though Empire was never "officially" released, the German scope print is nothing to sneeze at and I do believe, is a much better color than Derann's STAR WARS feature, (though I have that too), and is also sharper.

Now, though I love STAR WARS, I chose to not buy the Jedi print as I hate those damned ewoks, (I can't get away from the truth that they do look like little people in bear costumes! GRRR!), that, and I have also seen some incredibly AWFUL printings of the Derann Jedi. I bought one from a German collector for a friend and I was apalled at how bluish it was. It was in fact, so bluish that the Endor scenes had very little actual green, just shades of blue. I'm not kidding, it was that bad. I should hope that not all printings of Jedi faired so terribly as I Derann does have high marks as a general rule for they're prints.

Posted by Baudime Jam (Member # 3509) on February 06, 2013, 04:48 PM:

to Osi : I agree with your appreciation of prints' quality. However, I stick to the idea that a Star Wars collector is not interested mainly with the stock quality (image, colors, contrasts, sound, etc.) but with the fact that a print is a vintage item or not. This means that there are two different ways of considering the value of such collectibles. A bad print of a vintage Star Wars print will be more valuable for a SW fan than a pristine new bootleg print - especially if it has German scrolling titles and soundtrack. All depends if you intend to project this print or only store on a shelf along with other pieces of a collection.

I am a musician and I know this paradigm. A violin will be of great value because of its age or some craftsmanship characteristic, even if it sounds awfully. In the other hand, a very recent instrument, with a gorgeous sound, won't be of any interest for a collector. All depends if you intend to play this violin or just keep it in a safe.

This is why I initiated this discussion about the value of super-8 prints. For my own trilogy prints (which, I remind, were in excellent condition, like new), I was proposed offers ranging from 120 euros to 2250 euros. Who is right ? Who is wrong ? All depends from which point of view !

Then, as a seller, I could have sold these prints for a even higher price, if separately. But I preferred to keep them together and I am glad that they will be in the hands of an enthusiastic and careful collector [Smile]

I agree with your views Baudime on the two different types of collectors. And because of the huge Star Wars fan base that are not "film" collectors I believe this is part of what drives the prices up on these prints.

Thank you :-) The first time I conducted this superb score goes back to 1997, and it was in Warsaw. Quite a long time ago...

Apart from Herrmann (who is the absolute film composer ever, after me), I love Williams - of course. Here are performances of E.T. and Raiders

Williams is great...Have you ever conducted any Star Wars themes?

Also, in my mind an underrated score by J. Williams is THE FURY. Plenty of goosebumps in that score as well.

DePalma films on super 8-

Carrie - a 35 minute digest.

Dressed to Kill - a 45 minute digest.

I love DePalma's style. One of his under-rated movies is "Blow Out", starring John Travolta and Nancy Allen. I love his full use of widescreen in his movies too. (Ooops- off topic [Smile] )

James.

Thanks for the De Palma's super-8 references.

"Blow Out" is pure thriller but also tragic romance.
Let's not forget "Sisters" (another great Herrmann's score), and "Obsession" which I love the best in his filmography (still Herrmann by the way...).

One is never off topic when dealing with our passion for the 7th Art !

Posted by Baudime Jam (Member # 3509) on February 08, 2013, 03:28 AM:

Yes I did compose the original scores for seven silent features and sixth silent shorts.
And I am currently composing the music for two medium-length films.
You can have a look at my website here

So this is kind of special because my scores are intended to be performed on stage with actual screenings, even if some of them have been recorded.

Hi,

I must say i was probably under the influence of the dark side when i did the deal! [Big Grin]
Although, on the other hand i'm glad that i at least have a print in my collection that Michael hasn't! When i remember the times i've been drooling over his website. BTW, it was partly because of your website that i started collecting Super8 features. That and an innocent question by my friend Ronald Kwiatkowski whether i might be tempted to acquire this or that S8 movie...

I must say, i think the prints were worth the price i paid but i'm only speaking as a movie collector. Who knows, a Star Wars nut might have paid even more? That's why i'm indebted to Baudime for letting me acquire the movies as a lot instead of splitting them up.

That's cool Baudime, I have just recently enetred the realm of scoring, having just done the music for a british DVD to be released sometime in the near future, though in this case, the score is pop music.

Of course, the magic of this forum (and life) is that we can all disagree. I would much rather have a brilliant sparkling print of a STAR WARS feature, though bootleg, than have a crappy image "official" print, because, for me, it's the presentation. I'm not enamored with faded STAR WARS prints just because they were a legal release. I'm into quality.

... which was why I commented on that terrible bluish print of "Jedi". It was legal, but I'll be danged if I'm going to project something that looks like crap, whether legal or not.

Legality only really comes into play for "resale" (and actually, from what I understand, the legal prints were never meant to be resold in the first place!), and it doesn't even make the print any more valuable as a general rule, except for the luxury of an original box, (and even some of those weren't all that hot). I sold a "bootleg' of "Empire" months back for $1,200.00 as, though considered bootleg, it was "Empire", in scope.

I am a Star Wars fan, not a collector, so I would agree.
I am looking to archive digitally as many versions of the original unaltered trilogy I can find, with the hopes of restoring the film without all of the modern changes.

So yes, I am after the best quality presentations possible, the only reason I would want an 'original' print would be if it had some different frames to a bootleg.

We are not disagreeing : just describing different approaches of collecting.
Of course, the Holy Grail are original prints in pristine condition - which was the case for the set I have sold a few days ago.

Hi Baudime, just to let you know the Star Wars trilogy arrived yesterday morning, just in time for my Elmo to burn its lamp socket... [Big Grin]

"The Empire Strikes Back"

What Elmo is it? My GS has done the same. One pin always seem to corrode. Dissimilar metals on pin & contact?

@ David: It's a GS1200. Just like my Beaulieu, i love it to pieces, but then, like my Beaulieu it behaves like a Diva! My Eumig on the other hand has been chugging along since the day i was born, when my father bought it, which means 40 flawless years in service.

@Baudime: i WILL cherish them! Be assured of that [Smile]

Alex
