Here's an idea ...

How about some fine fellow being willing to trade for a very nice optical sound feature of the 1979 version of "The 39 Steps" starring Robert Powell and David warner, super 8 optical sound feature. It is pin sharp. Color is about an 8 out of 10. It has what I would call that "British" look to the color ... not really faded, but slightly tired looking but very good, none the less. On 3X600ft reels, all very full.

Also a second super 8 optical sound feature, that would probably only appeal to our UK collectors, "Rising Damp", 3X600ft also about a 8 or 9 out of 10 color wise, nice and sharp, good optical track, (the same to be said for the "39" Steps). This was based on a popular British comedy of the 70's, sadly, largerly unknown to many today, but quite funny.

Both films are in very good shape, condition wise, no deep scratches. In fact, nearly no scratches at all. As pristine as you could ask for this day and age.

Simply, a straight swap back and forth, with each party paying the shipping to ship they're print, (I would prefer some form of shipping with tracking.

My desires? Some tasty super 8 optical sound feature, (Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" an obvious choice), but a print that has very good color and is at least good to very good condition.

PM me if you have any offers folks. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

OSI Osgood

I hear from UK dealers Osi that Rising Damp has poor sound quality even by optical Super 8mm print standards. Is this correct of your print Osi?

It is a film I have always wanted, in tip top condition of course, however the optical prints now have a very limited shelf life as we all know and in this particular case the UK dealers that have had one of these have always been somewhat reluctant to sell me this print because of the soundtrack issues.

I rember I had a Fuji SD Auto with no tone control, so I bought a 2nd hand amp for £10 just to boost Rising damp and it helped greatly.

Superb film, I think they tend to be fairly OK colour wise as well.

Sadly now only on DVD but I would watch it every weekend on the TV or 10 feet wide.

Got the TV series set anywaay but they were re-running the series on ITV 3 recently to. Fantastic.

Best Mark.

Thanks for that Mark,it is reassuring to know perhaps these are still in good shape albeit not with the best soundtrack in the world.

From memory, can you remember if your SD Auto had a top sprocket as well as a rear or just a single rear sprocket Mark like nearly all 600ft capacity S8 projectors?

Hey Andrew!

As stated above, the "Rising Damp" has, at least, an 8 or 9 out of 10 concerning color. I'd give it a 9.5 personally, but color is a variable with every collector, but I certainly do not think that you would be disappointed.

As to sound, the optical sound isn't quite as loud as a U.S. optical soundtrack, but I have found that the UK super 8 opticals, while color has held up better than the U.S. prints, the sound was always a little lower. The sound isn't fuzzy, though, and I would say "average" for a UK super 8 optical.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Osi, I am currently deciding what to do myself with ALL of my optical prints. I want to keep them, but the machine I would like to view them on simply doesn't ever come up for sale!
Very frustrating, but I think I will continue to hunt one down for another 6 months before giving up and selling them all if not.

Hi Andrew yes they were from the Yelco factory and had 2 sprockta, also just mag badged as the Noris 510 single track and 512 twin track in Germany.

All quite late machines, bit rattatatty in the gate, very nice to use, just 100w lamp. Not much to do re lenses though.

Best Mark.

Thanks for the info there Mark. Ultimately I am looking for a SH30 with the f1.0 lens, but if I cannot find a decent one, I could at a pinch, try the SD Auto with the Spondon.
I have to say though, I have only ever seen one SD Auto for sale in the last 3 years so even that option isn't going to be an easy one.

Also not sure the auto stop mechanism would go down well with the Spondon still trying to pull the film onto the take up reel. [Frown]

I have also considered a Fumeo just for the optical prints but again, they are not cheap and I know I would only use it for Optical sound films, therefore would it be worth the outlay?
