200' 8mm Silents - PAIN IN THE PULLMAN, WHOOPS I'M AN INDIAN, PARDON MY SCOTCH, DOPEY DICKS and HOLD THAT LION - In the colorful, decorative boxes, thanks from Shorty

Shorty, do you know, off hand, if "Hold That Lion" was ever released as a 400ft full short? Also, does the 200ft version of this have the wonderful scene with all four Stooges involved? (Curley sleeping as a guest star in the film)

Yes, all four on the train are filmed, and no, a 400' was not made of that one - I know it might have been spectacular if Columbia released all 190 shorts in Super 8 Sound - can you imagine, no need for any further technology

Why on earth would you want silent versions? The sound versions are so much better and make the characters so much more comical.

Well Terry, the Coluimbia Studios authorized release of fifteen editions of the Stooges, with decorative color renderings, now 2 of them ARE sound (STUDIO STOOPS & WE WANT OUR MUMMY) - It is the box-art for me, as it has always been - Prints are fine (By Triangle Labs) - So there you have it - Oh, I do have the 400' talkies of course (except 2 still looking for) - Cheers, Shorty

I happen to have a really early Stooge release, it's on a 50ft reel, extremely full. I think it's an excerpt from "Hoof and Saddles" (I think that's the title. The neat thing is that the box is nearly pristine. It's one of those early releases. I'll have to look at it to see who made it. Standard 8mm

FYI -- PARDON MY SCOTCH was also release in 400' sound.
HOLD THAT LION, 200' silent, amazingly does not have the Curly scene.

The picture quality on the 400' sound Curlys is much better than any of the 200' silents -- you could fool someone into thinking they were 16mm originals. The 400' foot sound Shemps are almost as good -- just a hair or two lower.

I'm talking of course about official Columbia releases on B&W stock.

Shorty ...

It's an "Exclusive Films" release, green box with very nice illustration of the three of them. I'll try to take a photo of it and get it to you. I don't even watch it, I keep it on a shelf as a curio.

Oh, I know SCOTCH was 400' sound also - Mistaken about LION showing all 4 of them on the train, though I had seen that, but even Shorty forgets

Why they would leave out the Curly scene is beyond me. I often wonder what went through those editors' heads.

GOOFS AND SADDLES was also released in silent form, 50' and 200', by Columbia.

Oh I know, GOOFS/SADDLES is part of the fifteen set

Shorty ...

I was off on the name of the film company, it was "Excel Films"

I sent you an e-mail with photos of the little gem!
