I've just started editing a set of Super and ordinary 8 films from the 60s and 70s. I bought a Prinz Oxford P800 Editor Viewer on eBay. Worked ok for the 8mm but the Super 8 film keeps slipping from the sprockets. Now, today, the wind-on mechanism has broken and I am having to wind it on by hand. Any suggestions as to what Editor Viewer is the best to buy for Super 8?

Are you applying sufficient back tension?
Apply slight pressure on the feed reel to keep the film taut.

Yes, it didn't help. I think it's a problem with dual viewers where the same sprocket has to make do for both systems. Probably better on the ones where you have to reverse the sprocket for each type.

I have a Hanimex P200. WHen you change the gate in that it moves the sprocket back and forwards to engage the correct teeth for the film. I wonder if yours is similar and the linkage that moves the sprocket is ceased or broken.

No this doesn't have any mechanism to change anything. What they did was make a sprocket that was smaller at the top - to fit the Super 8 - then gets broader at the bottom - to fit the Regular 8. It wasn't a great idea, but I think they thought that people wouldn't want the bother of changing to a different mechanism. There were some built with interchangeable sprockets. Can't remember which. When you say 'When you change the gate in that it moves the sprocket back and forwards to engage the correct teeth for the film', it sounds as though the Hanimex P200 is one of them.

It's true. More model of Goko dual (and of Hanimex with the similar style) can run into this phenomenon. Even with my Goko A-303, so I preferred to take another for the Super 8.
Brian has described the operation well: dual sprocket teeth of this editors have wide at the base (for the Regular 8) and in the tipo more thinner (for super 8). But this stratagem doesn't always work well, at high speed the Super 8 films can escape.
I've always thought of these Goko, Hanimex, etc. there were two versions, and in one (older or newer) the sproket was interchangeable. Why do I think this? Because I saw Goko with a red or blue circle on the sprocket, and the screw in front, as if there was a sprocket dedicated to format. Perhaps it's a thing born after the method described above, for to solve the problem of the failure of the wide and thinner sprokets? It's a hypothesis...
As for the Super 8 editor viewers, I recommend the Minette. Silent, bright, stable. You can choose from different models if you prefer the big or small screen.

I've just found a Silber Dual 8 editor/viewer on eBay. It comes with an additional set of sprockets for regular 8. Never heard of the make, but it looks well-built and in very good condition, so I bought it. Will report back when I've received and tested it.
