Now heres something i hav'nt watched for so long.
This is a 400ft spool we have made up of Star Trek Blooper reels 1 & 3. Quite simply an old NBC television programm from the states. There were three 200ft spools released and we did have all three however, two of the reels had duplicated footage and too much padding between the out-takes. Quality varied greatly. I did sell my Brothers reel back along,(a complete reel), and what i have now is a 400ft spool with what i think is the best bits.
Reel two was by far the best in both quality and content & i have edited two parts together & in a slighly different order to make up a complete programm, i edited out some scilly made up items of forward/reverse bits to music that was niether funny & in a couple of cases a bit embarrasing to view, im now left with a much more entertaining and funny reel.
After a short title sequence we have some quite comical clips of all the usual stuff, forgotten line, short comical shots between takes, Kirk and Spock walking into doors that dont open, falling over, and one Dr McCoy doing the "ships shaking left to right" with a female & as he grabs her to stop his fall we see his hands grab those big jubblies, [Big Grin]
One of the funniest ones i think is when we see three very nice looking ladies doing some standing excercises between a take,(all to the opening theme music) and as one of male technicians walks behind them to put something on the set one of the girls bends down to stretch and as she does the guy turns to walk, stops and his face is a picture as he stands and & looks at her ass, he then walks away with a big smile and pffffff and laughs at the set camera crew, us blokes will never change [Wink]
we also see some set up laughs, pretty much too many to mention.

Despite the variable quality the colour on these reels is as good as the day i bought them many many years ago, its very good. The sound is fine but the whilst one of the reels image was fine the other had poor focus although its perfectly watchable,(if it wasnt i would have sent it back). The rarity of this item makes it a keeper for us. To see the likes of Lenord Nimoy, William Shatner, James Doohan,Deforest Kelly and gang fluffing lines, tripping and clowning around on set is great fun and certainly makes a great start or finish if your showing any other Star Trek TV super 8 films or the 3 x 400ft ST the motion picture as we did tonight.
If you see them for sale there well worth grabbing.

didn't they repeat some of the bloopers on the different reels to make a full 200ft for each reel? I seem to remember that.

My favorite one was when Spocks son came on set, and they put Spock ears on him. Nimoy is in the "Captians chair" and the son just comes up and says "hi daddy!" and Nimoy just cracks up!

Osi,that is a good one, on our print this is on the reel with poor image quality, what was yours like? (I wonder if we were unlucky or were all the reel 3s the same)

Here is an update to the Bloopers reels.

This was an item from Red Fox many years a go. There were three 200ft reels of this programme from American TV released and i searched out all three when they were new for sale.
I cant remember what order i bought them in but here is my 2018 thoughts on this release after watching it again ,first time since my previous review.,
The first 200ft reel i bought was part 2 and was great, it had the trekky titles with outtakes between the titles, the image is good, (it is only bits of film edited out off the cutting room floor), the sound is actually pretty good, nice and clear with decent bass levels. The content itself is also not too bad, theirs more than enough in there for some really good laughs, but, i did find that for some reason they padded it out with some footage that made me think, "What was that for"? At the end of the day, it was a very good collectable and rare item. I had to look out for the other two releases.
I found another one off a Derann list, the quality was abysmal, the image looked like someone cleaned the whole film with a Brillo pad and the sound was a grade C-/B- and very tinny. This one was part one. Half of the reel was made up of utter rubbish, reverse film with music, (not even funny), introductions of the girls, the "muscle" the monsters and other pointless bits. The actual bloopers that were in this reel, (around 50fts worth), were ok even if the quality was awful. Then i found the last part, i was very disappointed to find that this reel had around 70% of repeat footage from part one. I wasn't going to keep this one so i sold it on. What i have ended up with is this,
My own edit of the poor quality intro with a few bloopers, then then the good reel of out-takes, (slightly edited to take out the pointless items that marred this part) and the last 30ft made up of the bloopers left over from the poorer reel, so all in all i now have a good 300/320ft reel of Star Trek, Behind the scenes, (as it is introduced by the alligator man monster). I now enjoy this reel and very pleased to report, it does not appear to have any fade.

Apparently Leonard Nimoy was quite upset that these reels made it to the public.

I read that they were put together for the end of season parties for cast and crew and were never meant to "escape" for the public to see, which would explain some of the odd things in there.

Nimoy apparently felt that as an artist, he was being somewhat exposed without his permission, the film set being a safe working environment where mistakes could be made amongst colleagues.

However, there are also rumours that a certain fella in charge may well have allowed these out takes to be seen at sci-fi conventions, etc.

Either way, some of them are very funny and I think Nimoy relaxed in later years and also saw the funny side.

Thanks for that information Rob, i didn't realise Mr Nimoy got upset by it. Actors can be funny about these things, i dont no why though, at the end of the day they are simply actors.
When you see some of today's actors and actresses on the those ponsy red carpets posing for the camera's, its clear some of them think there royalty.
These outtakes at least let you see these guys like to have a laugh in there jobs. [Wink]

I know some actors can be prima donnas, but I can kind of see Leonard Nimoy's point Tom, especially as an actor still fairly early on in his career.

It's like anyone who takes their profession seriously, people laughing at your mistakes might not always seem so funny to you.

That said, I'm sure those guys eventually realised that we were always laughing with them, not at them.

This is a great reel, I have 2 X 200' Star Trek blooper reels including this one, which I originally saw at a local event here in Vancouver, BC where Gene Roddenberry himself introduced the Blooper reels ( including more content than the Super 8 reels ) as an intro to a full presentation of his Star Trek pilot " The Cage", before it was televised in 1988. Nice to see in Cine presentation.

Hi Burton, it's great to hear first hand experience from someone that was there at the time.

Another great review, Tom!

Most of these are badly faded these day and you did a good edit together of that footage. What film stock was this on? Just curious.

Just LOVE that little bit where Nimoy's son comes onto the set with vulcan ears on, (when Nimoy is in the captains chair) and causes nimoy to bust out laughing!

Rob, i do see the point of Mr Nimoy being upset especially as they wernt told of it going public.
Osi, i shall try and see if i can see the film stock.I am happy with my own edit now thats for sure. [Wink]

Tom, I think that making your own edit up from these various releases is a great thing to do.

I remember hiring one of these many years ago to show to my mother, who is a big Star Trek fan, and having to shut down the projector for the last 30ft or so because it was just embarrassing.

Thank goodness I previewed it first.

I had to pretend it had excessively long lab tail at the end...

For those that have seen it, you'll know what I mean. It wasn't funny then and it isn't now, regardless of who the "audience" was intended to be.

i am pleased with this final edit of my own. What we now have is around 300/330ft of pure out-takes and 80% of it is very good quality with the 20% rough quality being acceptable as it is purely out-takes with no nonsense.
As these reels were taken from one TV show i wonder why there is such a difference of image and sound quality on the 8mm releases [Wink]
